Lakes ,78, of Cady Lane, East Woodstock, died Friday morning at home with his family by his side. Mr. Lakes was born Nov. 24,1921, in Lowell, Mass., a son of the late Athena (Nakis) and Stephen Manolakes. He was the husband of Martha (Kurz) Lakes. They were married Oct. 7,1948, in Munich, Germany. She survives him. Mr. Lakes was a veteran of World War II. He served as administrative NCO in the Army Air Corp. stationed in Munich, Germany, from 1945 to 1948. After an honorable discharge, he attended Suffolk University in Boston and graduated in 1952 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. In 1954, he went to work for The Rex Corp. in Acton, Mass. He moved to Coventry in 1965 as a result of the Rex Corp. relocating to Willimantic under the name brand Rex. He served in the Human Resources Department in various capacities including industrial relations manager, personnel manager and director of employee benefits until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Lakes was a member of the Willimantic Chamber of Commerce for 25 years and was a member of numerous human resource organizations. He was a member of the American Legion and a loyal Republican party member with great affection for President Ronald Reagan. After his retirement, he devoted all his time to the care of his wife, Martha. In 1992, he moved to East Woodstock to be with family. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Danielson, and enjoyed reading. His passion was politics. He was predeceased by one brother, John Manolakis of Lowell, Mass. In addition to his wife, he is survives by two sons, Steven Lakes of Colchester and Carl Lakes of East Woodstock; and numerous nieces and nephews. He also is survived by two grandchildren. Lakes, 78, of Candy Lane, East Woodstock, a World War II veteran and a retired human resources worker, died Friday, Aug. 11, at home. He leaves his wife of 51 years, Martha (Kurz) Lakes; two sons, Steven Lakes of Colchester, Conn., and Carl Lakes of East Woodstock; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A brother, John Manolakis of Lowell, died before him. He was born in Lowell, son of Stephen and Athena (Nakis) Manolakes, and moved to Coventry, Conn., in 1965 and to East Woodstock in 1992.
