END transcription of Newspapers->Deaths->13.9.jpg From a local newspaper in March of 1928: BEGIN FRED KITZ DIES AT THE AGE OF 80 Was born on the ocean enroute to America The Good Ship was on the ocean for 120 days and buffeted by a raging storm. Frederick Kitz, Sr. who was nearly 81 years old, died at the home of his son, Fred, at Mongaup Valley on Tuesday, March 27th, following an illness of two weeks of heart trouble. Three years before -- on Dec. 20th -- he lost his helpmate, who had been with him through all the vicisitudes of their married life, which was more than a half century in length. It was a sorry day for the old gentleman and he longingly mourned her departure. He had always been rugged and healthy, and it was only a few days before his death that the break came. Mr. Kitz was the son of Valentine Kitz and Gutlebber Hammacher, who came to this country from Germany in 1847. They were on the ocean for one hundred and twenty days and it was during the voyage that Baby Kitz was born. He always marveled at the fact that he was a born seaman instead of a landsman. The good old ship Baltimore was the vessel on which his parents sailed. It was a strong sea for a part of the way across, and the ship was buffeted to and fro; while her beam creaked, and her sails were torn, she stood up under the ordeal grandly and finally landed at the Castle Garden. The ship was well on the American side when a gale struck her broadside and swept her along at a fast speed toward the country from whence she came. But it was in American waters that Baby Kitz was born April 22, 1847, and from that day to the day he died he was an American citizen, unwavering in his allegiance to Uncle Sam. His parents went to Jeffersonville where they lived for many years. Mr. Kitz, grown to young manhood, went to Obernburg where he married Miss Catharine Deckelman, September 1, 1868. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Father Rosch in St. Mary's church. He bought a farm and tilled the soil successfully until twenty-four years ago, when he sold the farm and went to Mongaup Valley, where he bought the "Half Way House", which he conducted for three years. He sold the place to Herman Tauch and then went to live with his son, Fred J. Kitz, who owned the Central Hotel. The funeral was held on March 30th, from the same church at Obernburg, where he had gone forth fifty-five years before as a happy bride-groom and where he had gone out fifty-three years later mourning the loss of that companion. The services for the dead were performed by Rev. Father Lyons of Monticello, Father Dominio, of Obernburg and Father Fitzgerald of Monticello, March 30th. The pall bearers were six grandsons, quite a remarkable occurrence as well as a remarkable service. They were: Melvin Heidt, Charles Heidt, Nick Heidt, Leon Schad, William Kitz and Henry Schad. Among the survivors are: three sons, four daughters, 17 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The sons are William Anthony Kitz of the town of Fremont; Joseph, of New Brunswick, N. J.; and Fred J. Kitz at Mongaup Valley. The daughters are: Catharine, wife of Charles M. Heidt, of Liberty; Dora, wife of Terrance McMuray of Monticello; Mrs. Clara Gallagher of Starlight and Mrs. Anna Doucher, of Mongaup Valley. END
