END As written by Rose Elizabeth (Kille) Leewe: BEGIN Francis Joseph Leewe was born Oct. 25, 1911 in Obernburg, N.Y. He was the son of Francis Joseph Leewe, Sr. and Mary Schwarz Leewe. His mother died on Oct. 6, 1917. Later on his father remarried Emilie Palencar. She came from Austria but was living in Philadelphia, Pa. at the time. She came to Obernburg to live. Frank spent most of his boyhood and part of his manhood on the homestead. The Leewe's owned a chicken farm (earlier they had cattle, horses, geese and ducks also). Frank's father had 3 vegetable gardens and they had a route selling vegetables. They also bought flowers from Kaemphers' in Liberty and resold them on the route. People could also come to the Leewe place to buy vegetables from the gardens. The vegetable route closed in 1941 or '42. It restarted briefly in 1945 to 1946 on a minor scale. Frank entered St. Joseph's Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y. and was there 1926 - 1927. Then he left. He worked on the Railroad at some point - also did road work for the town a number of years before 1938. 1938 - 1939 he worked on State Road 97. Also worked several other years part time on State Roads. On May 13, 1942 Frank left for the Army. After training in several different camps in the U.S. he landed in England in September 1942. He also served in Africa and Italy. He came home from the Army in the Fall of 1945 and again worked on the homestead. He also helped out many neighbors and friends over the years with various jobs as haying, clearing crops and barns, picking fruit, and various other things. He also was a gravedigger for St. Mary's Church in Obernburg. Franks's father died Feb. 16, 1952. Frank applied to work at Bath Veteran's Hospital in Bath, N.Y. in April 1956 as an attendant. Later on the name of Wassaic State School was changed to Wassaic Developmental Center. Frank later on became the Custodian of the Boys' School at the Wassaic Developmental Center. On Oct. 6, 1956 Frank married Rose Leewe of Obernburg, N.Y. at St. Mary's R. C. Church in Obernburg. After a short honeymoon they moved to Amenia, N.Y. In 1979 Frank was honored as the "Employee of the Year" at Wassaic Developmental Center. On Oct. 30, 1981 Frank retired from work. After a long illness he died May 17, 1991 at his home in Amenia. He was a member of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Amenia and was buried in Immaculate Conception Cemetery there. Frank and Rose had 4 children - Joseph Francis born Oct. 6, 1957, Thomas Jude and Mary Rose twins born Nov. 25, 1958 and Michael William born Aug. 30, 1960. Rose Elizabeth Kille was born in North Branch, N.Y. on February 7, 1923. She was the daughter of William and Elisabeth Kille. Later, toward Spring I think, the Kille family moved to Obernburg, N.Y. where they were building a house. They had at first put up 1 building where they lived until the regular house was completed. The first building had 2 floors - 3 rooms on 1st floor and a big space upstairs. The 1st building later became a chicken coop. My father used the 2 bigger rooms for chickens and the small room became a feed room. Stairs went up from there to the 2nd floor. He used that to store hay, straw and equipment. I remember it well. Rose attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade School in Obernburg and went to the Callicoon High School in Callicoon, N.Y. She left there in 1942 but was not a graduate. She worked for several years in boarding houses in the Summer and during the rest of the year did day work for several people, cleaning, housecleaning, and outdoor work. Also had 1 housekeeper job with elderly people. For several years Rose was a housekeeper at St. Mary's Rectory in Obernburg, N.Y. Her jobs were cooking, dish cleaning, and if the pastor was out to answer the phone and doorbell, take messages, etc. Rose was also a correspondent for Obernburg for the Sullivan County Democrat in Callicoon for several years (a non-paying job), ending when she got married and left Obernburg. Rose very much enjoyed the correspondent job - it got her to talk to people, etc. (There was about 2 years when she could not work on account of severe illness.) Rose was married to Francis J. Leewe at St. Mary's RC Church, Obernburg on Oct. 6, 1956. They moved to Amenia, N.Y. after their honeymoon. Rose and Frank had 4 children, Joe born in 1958, Tom and Mary twins born in 1959 and Michael born in 1960. END findagrave.com ...
