"Tony" Deckelman of Obernburg, a lifelong area resident and retired mail route carrier out of the Callicoon Post office, died Wednesday, July 19, 1995, in Callicoon. He was 73 years of age. "Mailman Deck," as he was known to his neighbors, succumbed to a heart attack while having lunch at his favorite diner in Callicoon -- the Depot. A frequent customer of the eatery, Deckelman would always find a stool where he could strike up a conversation with another diner. His vast knowledge of local sports, politics, government and world affairs allowed him to talk on any topic. Deckelman recently retired from the U.S. Postal service following 43 years of service. His highway contract included stops in Hankins, Mileses, Fremont Center, Long Eddy and Obernburg, his hometown. His relatives remembered him as a rabid Giants fan and a lover of local sports. Florence Leewe, Callicoon Postmaster, said, "Tony was very dedicated, very conscientious. He would tell stories of his experiences on the route that would really make you laugh. "He was very interested in the local sports scene and also the Memorial Day Parade in Fremont Center," Leewe said. "He was just a good guy." Irene Vaupel, a relative, said "Tony loved the Marine Corps -- he also loved magazines and newspapers, all the current news. He kept up on everything. "Tony always thought of himself as a decent man -- and we all have to agree with that assessment," Vaupel said. Vaupel also remembered Tony's love for history and his keen mind for names. "A history book has closed," she said, regarding his death. The son of the late Anthony W. and Elmira Vaupel Deckelman, he was born January 12, 1922, in New York City. He was a member of the last class to graduate from the Callicoon High School (1939). Mr. Deckelman was a World War II veteran of the Marine Corps and was a life member of the Sullivan County Marine Corps. He was a member of the H. Russell Kenyon Post No. 5808, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Callicoon, and a member of St. Mary's R.C. Church and the Holy Name Society of the church, both at Obernburg. He is survived by several cousins. Friends may call at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary's R.C. Church in Obernburg with the Rev. Fabian Flynn officiating. Burial will be made in St. Mary's Cemetery in Obernburg.
