message exchange ... BEGIN From: "Jay Wright" Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 10:00:37 -0500 I've had a chance to look back at some of the things in my Lake file . . . (1) "Children by inference" of 1808 John Lake. The genealogist who helped me with some Hunterdon research back in 1978-79 was John W. Haines (then of Medford Lakes, NJ), and he was relying partly on what he found in Hiram Deats' Notebooks. Deats' Notebooks apparently furnished JWH's first reference to Zenas, who was listed (as Zenus or Zenias) along with Reuben as "children by inference from probate records" of the John Lake who died in 1808. He cited Docket File #03731. (Letter from JWH to JBW, 13 Sep 1978). (2) Amwell Tax Ratables. In another letter, Mr. Haines included Tax Ratables from Amwell Twp, Hunterdon County. Among the Lakes listed in 1780 was Garret. In 1784, Reuben and Garret. In 1786, Reuben. In 1802, Reuben. (Letter from JWH to JBW, 7 Sep 1978). (3) No Zenas Lake deeds. Mr. Haines never found Zenas Lake in Hunterdon Co. Deeds, Grantor & Grantee indexes, nor in Hunterdon County marriages, nor in NJ Marriages, 1665-1800. (4) Amwell Militia. Mr. Haines found in Norton-NJ in 1793, p. 181, a listing for Zenus Lake in Amwell Militia and, p. 184, Reuben Lake, Amwell Militia, and, p. 181, Garrit Lake, Amwell Militia. (Letter from JWH to JBW, 27 Aug 1978). (5) I subsequently obtained photocopies of 03731 from the Hunterdon County Surrogate's Office, showing Luther Opdycke, John Taylor and "Zenes" Lake as administrators and/or sureties and "Zenias" Lake receiving payment of $202.69 [or 202.59?]. (6) Warford connection? I haven't mentioned before that one of Zenas Lake's children was Elisha Warford Lake. I've never found any relationship to a Warford family, which certainly might suggest that the name honored a friend/neighbor. Marshall Lake noted for me (email of 5 Dec 2002) that Daniel Lake (owned 357 acres in or near Baptistown in 1786). Elisha Warford owned 100 acres in 1814 in Alexandria Twp. John Worford owned 204 acres in Kingwood Twp (about 2.5 miles southwest of Daniel Lake's land. Joseph Warford owned 212 acres dated 1747 in what is probably today Washington Twp, Warren Co. (7) Barcroft connection? Mr. Haines had Phyllis D'Autrechy help with some of the work. She mentioned having found a family group sheet showing that Reuben Lake m. Elizabeth Barcroft. Citing "Barcroft Genealogy," p. 175, and Hunterdon Co Deed 2:233, she also pointed out that Thomas Lake m. Hannah Barcroft. (8) Everitt connection? Marshall has pointed out to me that among the children of Daniel Everitt Sr., of Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, (will dated 1804, proved 1807) was a daughter Mary who was the wife of John Lake. Marshall said (email, 31 Oct 2002) that the only John Lake in Hunterdon during this time period who he'd been unable to match with a wife was John Lake, presumed father of Reuben and Zenas. (9) Dearborn County, Indiana, connection -- or coincidence? Zenas Lake was, as I said in an earlier email, in the 1820 census in Hamilton County (Cincinnati vicinity), Ohio. He bought land in Marion County (Indianapolis vicinity), Indiana, in 1821. One of Zenas' daughters was Priscilla Lake (c.1799-c.1869) who married Thomas Brackenridge/Breckenridge. I don't know exactly when or where Priscilla and Thomas married, but I suspect it was c. 1820 (the year Zenas and wife were in Hamilton Co, OH), and I suspect it was in Hamilton Co. Priscilla and Thomas spent their adult life in Dearborn Co, IN, the county just across the Ohio-Indiana border from Hamilton Co. Thomas probably was born in Bucks Co, PA (recall my mention yesterday of the reference to John Lake as "late of Tinicum Twp" in Bucks Co). Note also that William Lake (born 1786, Amwell Twp -- number 1.2.2.1 in Marshall's list) moved to Dearborn Co, IN with his wife, Mary Jane Rounsavell Lake, in 1815. I realize, obviously, that the migration pattern from Hunterdon County to Hamilton Co, OH, to Dearborn/Fayette/Franklin counties in Indiana was a common one, so it may be entirely coincidental that William Lake ended up in Dearborn, as did Zenas' daughter Priscilla. Or is it more than coincidence? (10) Z M. This is, admittedly, really reaching, but the same William Lake (born 1786, Amwell Twp) had a son Willis Lake who had a child named "Z M" (see Marshall lake's list, number 1.2.2.1.3). Might the Z have been an initial for Zenas? (11) Speculation. When I was a genealogy newbie, way back in 1964 (gasp!), I received a letter from a knowledgeable Lake researcher who wrote, "My supposition is that Zenas Lake is probably a son of one of the older brothers of this Wm. Lake [who m. Mary Rounsavell in 1807 in Hunterdon Co] and came down the Ohio River at about the same time." [letter from Alice Lake Ketron to JBW, 23 Mar 1964]. Well, this is a lot to chew on, but maybe you'll spot some clue we've previously missed. Other stuff: Thanks for the Hartpence list. Many thanks. I haven't had time (and won't for at least three days) had a chance to compare what you have to Mrs. Heer's book, but I'll do it. Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2005 18:58:39 -0500 From: Marfy Goodspeed >I've had a chance to look back at some of the things in my Lake file . . . >(5) I subsequently obtained photocopies of 03731 from the Hunterdon >County Surrogate's Office, showing Luther Opdycke, John Taylor and "Zenes" >Lake as administrators and/or sureties and "Zenias" Lake receiving payment >of $202.69 [or 202.59?]. While I was in the Surrogate's office last Friday, I took a look at the Letters of Administration for your John Lake. Administration was granted Luther Opdycke Esq. (as you know) on 14 April 1808, with John Taylor and Zenas Lake as sureties [L/A Vol 1 pg 49]. I decided to take a look at his Inventory while I was at it, which I'll summarize-- Inventory of John Lake, late of Alexandria, made by James Larason and James Mettler on 29 April 1808. [the typical assortment of farm family stuff], 7 sheep in the hands of Jacob Swallow, 60 weight of flax in the hands of Jacob Swallow, 1 gun [this is not so typical]; notes against Beniah Holdron, Andrew Hise, Abel Taylor, Luther Opdycke Jr., John Smith, James Freeze, Joseph Minn. Also "Zenas Lake on vendue list $30.09" and Jacob Swallow on vendue list $19.42. Whole amount of inventory $339.38 plus debt in the hands of Jacob Swallow of $11.11 for a total of $350.49. The inventory was recorded on 4 May 1808 when it was sworn to by Luther Opdycke Esq and James Larason [Inv Vol.1 pg 386]. This doesn't tell you anything about the relationship of John and Zenas Lake, of course, but perhaps it gives you a little context. > (6) Warford connection? Elisha Warford Lake? Well-- Elisha Warford was one of the largest land owners in the area around Croton and Locktown in Delaware (Amwell) and Kingwood Townships there ever was. A real character! If you tried to find a property owned by Elisha Warford by looking for it in the deed index, you'd throw up your hands in despair, because 1) he sold a lot of it, so there are many many deeds, and 2) he hardly ever said where he got his property from. Oh if I could get my hands on him! In any case, Elisha Warford was the son of James Warford and Rachel Cain, and therefore, the nephew of Hannah Warford who married Wm Bailey. Elisha was born 10 Oct 1785 and died 16 May 1872. His first wife was Mary Arnwine, and his second wife was her sister Elizabeth Arnwine. I see no relationship between his children and Daniel Lake. Marshall says Daniel Lake was born before 1758 and he must have died after 1818 when he was executor of Wm Bailey's Lwt. So Elisha was a generation younger than Daniel Lake. I just checked my database to see if I might have an earlier Elisha Warford, but I don't. I think he was one of a kind.
