The diary was written in 1874. Daniel was lost at sea in 1880 at the age of 25. Daniel lived in Pleasantville, NJ. I will be posting the entries from his diary each day. This will give you a look into the daily life of a young man in the year 1874. Note: The misspellings and capitalizations are the same as written in the diary. I did not want to change anything. My Ancestor in 1874 Diary of Daniel Sampson Lake Thursday, December 31, 1874 Clear Wind West and the bay was froze up in the morning open by night. We had a big dinner guest were Uncle Lewis and Wife, Joel E. Adams and Wife, Uncle Jesse and Wife. I went and got a load of wood in the forenoon. Abbie Fifield is dead. They are having a very fine time up to St. Johns with their extra meetings I hear. Wednesday, December 30, 1874 Clear Wind N. W. and cold. I shoemaked in the forenoon. I cut some wood in the afternoon. Samuel Martin has a cow that wont own it's calf. Henry Boice has sold out his share in the oyster business to Dan O. Leeds. Wesley came home at night. he got my revolver she cost $7.70 with 2 box cartridges .55 each making $8.80 in all. Tuesday, December 29, 1874 Rainy all day. Wind west. Foggy all day. I cut some wood in the afternoon. Wesley went to town. I asked Clate Leeds if I could go with him when he started in the spring; he said I could. Wesley did not come home at night. Monday, December 28, 1874 Clear and Calm. We sent 8 bags of oysters and I took them up to Absecon. I sent by wesley to get me a revolver. Bell Boen peddled some apples and we bought some and walnuts two. Thomas and I went down and wached oysters we watched all night. Sunday, December 27, 1874 Clear Wind South. I went to Salem in the afternoon. I went to Mount Pleasant at night. It looked like raining towards night. Saturday, December 26, 1874 Clowdy Wind South I went and got a load of wood in the forenoon. It rained in the afternoon. Friday, December 25, 1874 Clear Wind West We cruised about all day. I went to the division at night. Thursday, December 24, 1874 Clear and Cool Wind South West. Thomas and I went up in the wood and got some fatpine in the forenoon. It blew hard about noon. I took Flora up to Aunt Juls to go to the christmas tree at absecon. Wednesday, December 23, 1874 Clear Wind West and S I carted manure all day and spread it on the the strawberries up by Mount Pleasant. Thomas and I sold our muskrats skins 3 in number for 20 cts each. It was examination to at our school. Tuesday, December 22, 1874 Clear wind South The tide came over a little and Thomas and I killed 1 Mink. bill Adams bought him down to the bottom without being skinned he gave $1.00. I put a lock on my chest. It rained towards night. Aunt Linda went home. Uncle Jesse came home from N. York. the deciever put him ashore at Grt. Egg harbor Monday, December 21, 1874 Clear Wind West Thomas and I went down to go gunning but the tide did not come over so we came up, but then afterward I went down to the creek to fasten the gates open shut to keep from washing our oyster off the flatform. I chopped wood in the afternoon. Uncle Lewis killed 3 pigs weighing 50 lbs, 60 and 60 lbs respectively. Aunt Linda came down. Sunday, December 20, 1874 Rainy Wind N. East calm in the morning and a gale at night. Thomas and I went down to the watchhouse and staid all day. John Collins started a gunning this morning. Saturday, December 19, 1874 Clear Wind N. W. We went in the bay and caught some oysters and fixed up the watch house. The John Wesley came in from N. York. I heard that Uncle Jesse was coming in here and let the Deceiver go down to Chincoteague and they catch her load how this is I do not know. Thomas went down to Pardon's and got him a hat. Friday, December 18, 1874 Clear Wind West We went in the woods and got a load of wood up to negro-hill. The tide was down low today. Father went to absecon and bought some stove pipe for the watch house and a lock for my chest and Grandmother's damper. I went to the division and we were invited over to Atlantic next monday to their Division Caspar Adams has been getting drunk. Thursday, December 17, 1874 Clowdy Wind S and W. I chopped wood all day. I went to salem at night. I heard that Uncle Jesse had 12,000 oysters left last monday to sell out. Wednesday, December 16, 1874 Clear Wind South Father and I went in the woods and got a load and I took some wheat to the mill besides. I went over to Squires to see a lawsuit between Bill Jeffres, plaintiff and George I. Risley and Dan C. Stibbens defendants for going in a creek that had been staked found guilty and they carried it up to court Tuesday, December 15, 1874 Clear Wind West Thomas and I got up here by noon Monday, December 14, 1874 Rainy in the morning, clear in the afternoon. Father, uncle Lewis and Albert went down across the bay and finished the house and Thomas and I staid there all night and it was so cold that it froze the bay over. W I cut wood in the forenoon and in the afternoon I went down across the bay with Thomas to get some tools out of the house and to put the dolly in the creek. Bill Eldridge caugh Edward H. Stibens stealing his oysters and gave till to-day to leave in or he would put him in Jail he caught him on wednesday Friday, December 11, 1874 Clear Wind West We worked on the house all day 7 of us all told. but did not quite finish. I went to the division at night. the division is invited to absecon next Sunday evening to a temperance lecture by Rev G. B. E We went down to fix the and put the house up we got it put up befor night but did not finish it Aunt Deb was down here visiting. Tuesday, December 8, 1874 Clear Wind West I took captains crew up to absecon to go up to philadelphia Father went to Mays Landing with Bill Adams I went to salem at night with Ira Captain Lake paid for taking the men to Absecon. Monday, December 7, 1874 Clear. Wind. West I cut some wood in the afternoon and dressed to go to salem but it sprinkled and so I staid at home. Captain Lake came in and laid his schooner up for the winter. Sunday, December 6, 1874 Clear Wind S. W and it rained about 8 Oc P.M. I went to Salem afternoon and night. Saturday, December 5, 1874 Clear. Wind. West chopped some wood in the afternoon Friday, December 4, 1874 Clear Wind North Thomas and I went gunning we got one diver gone all day. We went to the division at night. Aunt Hannah came down to see about selling the cranberry ground to the Camden and Atlantic railroad to make watter works on to atlantic. Thursday, December 3, 1874 Clear Wind S. W. The schooner A. Robinson brought us some oysters from the Chesapeake 200 bus and we planted them out: we had the Dolley Varden to carry them in and Thomas helped throw them out. Bill Jeffries had George I. Risley and Dan C. Stibens took to Jail for making threats. Mother went up to Aunt Hans. Father went down to settle for his oysters at night. It clowed up and commenced to rain at 7 Oc P. M. Wednesday, December 2, 1874 Clear Wind S and W I put the hinges on and painted my chest and then put and handle in; then went over to Squires to see a lawsuit where Bill Jafres sued George I. Risley and Dan C. Stibens for going up a creek where he had it staked off. Adjourned for 2 weeks. Father went in the bay. Father and Mother went to salem to extra meetings. It was very warm about noon. Wind S at night. Tuesday, December 1, 1874 Clear Wind S. W. clowdy and snowed some in the afternoon clear again at night. I went eeling and got 22 doz and 9 Uncle Lewis he came down and got 19 Doz and 5. we carted them up with bell. I sold 2.25 worth. Father he went to absecon and got some hinges to put on my chest. Monday, November 30, 1874 Clear Wind West I cut two load of wood. Father went in the woods and got one load. Ezra Micgronagle had is pig killed to day by Bill Adams and so did John Race. Sunday, November 29, 1874 Rainy in the forenoon wind West. clear afternoon. I went to church at night. Rachel Adams was buried to Mount Pleasant. Saturday, November 28, 1874 Foggy in the forenoon and light breezes to the eastward. Thomas and I went eeling we got 27 apiece. Uncle Lewis went gunning and got one duck. Friday, November 27, 1874 Clear Wind West I cut a load of oak wood in the forenoon. and spread some hay in the afternoon. I went to the division at night Thursday, November 26, 1874 Clear Wind West Father and I we went and got a load of oakwood in the forenoon. I worked at my chest in the afternoon. Joseph M. Ingersoll and Joshua Adams came home from New York they brought some buckwheat and apples in. Wednesday, November 25, 1874 Clear Wind West Thomas and I we went down and got our oysters and brought them up in the forenoon I went to absecon and got a crystal in my watch for .25 cts came home and sawed out stuff to make a chest Father brought some buck wheat of Henry Wright for 3.75 a hund cwt Tuesday, November 24, 1874 Clear. Wind. West thomas and I went down in the thoroughfare oystering and got up about dark I went down to Roger's after supper and helped to mark some book or libraries to go to the school; he bought the books to a second hand store and got 50 for $20. some were new. David Lee's schooner is on a high bar now they took her down when the tide was over and she drug after they left her. Monday, November 23, 1874 Rainy. Wind. south The tide came over and Thomas and I went gunning we got two muskrats. There was a lawsuit over to Squires Somers T. Champion sued a couple of boys for setting fire to a brushheap of his. Sunday, November 22, 1874 Clowdy Wind S. E. and it got to raining by 8 Oc P.M. I went to Mount Pleasant afternoon and night it rained befor we got home. Saturday, November 21, 1874 Clear Wind West and blew hard. Father went up to absecon in the afternoon and took some apples that he bought for her. Uncle Lewis killed 3 hogs one weighed 195 lbs one 50 and the other 65 lbs Friday, November 20, 1874 Rainy Wind E S and West clear at night. I went to salem to at night. Thursday, November 19, 1874 Clear Wind N. E I went up to our woods and got a load of wood in the afternoon. I went up to absecon to their division at night. Uncle Lewis came home from barnegat and planted out his oysters. It is becoming in clowdy and looks like raining. Wednesday, November 18, 1874 Clear. Wind. W thomas and I went eeling in Lone Cedar we got 50 apiece. Calvin Wright had an auction and sold off their housen goods for they are going to move away. The deceiver is down to chincoteague and some one has seized her to pay a debt. I lifted 400 lbs over to Wesleys. Tuesday, November 17, 1874 Clear. Wind. South. We cut and carted two load of hay from the thoroughfare. Thomas and Waron had our skift to go in the bay in because they had theirs up to the landing overhawling. Waron seen a duck in the ditch so he came up and got his gun and went for him. but he didn't get him. Monday, November 16, 1874 Clear. Wind. West We killed our hog; he weighed 193 lbs. Uncle Jesse went to chincoeague to see about running oysters. for the one he was to run for has flunked up. Bill Adams killed 13 hogs for folks. Sunday, November 15, 1874 Clowdy. Wind S. W. David took a rabbit out of his well and we put in some boddys snare we went to salem afternoon. we went to Mount Pleasant but no Preacher the same as it was in the afternoon. Saturday, November 14, 1874 Clear. Wind. South. Nothing much to do I studdied some and went down to the creek with Thomas. Father went up to absecon to get Mark a pair of shoes did not get any. Friday, November 13, 1874 Clear Wind west I froze hard. I stayed in the house with Ezra (My grandfather) in the forenoon and Father went and got a half cord of wood and we cut it up in the afternoon. Squire Ingersoll says he is going to have a black smith in 2 or 3 weeks. I went to the division at night and acted as O. S. Sentinel. Thursday, November 12, 1874 Clear. Wind. West. I mended shoes most all day. Father went up to absecon afternoon. Father and Armor Hackany have chartered a schooner to go to the chesapeak with Edwar Horton and get a load of plants. Wednesday, November 11, 1874 Clear Wind West and blew hard. We spread hay up by Mount Pleasant in the forenoon Waron D and I went gunning in the afternoon and watched for black ducks at night saw none we got two Old wives in the afternoon. Hen Somers left Mobile Saturday. Tuesday, November 10, 1874 Clear Wind South We carted hay all day. Thomas burned a brush heap. Uncle Jesse killed a pig weighed 143 lbs. It was very warm in the forenoon, but clowdy and cool in the afternoon. Burris Collins killed a dunkeydoo down to the bottom. Thomas got another load of brush to make another heap. Monday, November 9, 1874 Clowdy Wind S. W We carted 2 load of hay from the thoroughfare. It sprinkled a little through the day. Uncle Lewis started to barnegat. he took Willie because Waron had a sore foot. Aunt harriet moved her loom out into the other room with fathers help. They say Joh Collins in the uncle Dan came out of Little Egg with wind N. E blowing hard and took him 3 1.2 to come to Absecon dist 10 mile, noble sailing isn't it. Sunday, November 8, 1874 Clear Wind S W I went to salem in the afternoon. and to Mount Pleasant at night. Saturday, November 7, 1874 Clear Wind N. E. Thomas and I went gunning and eeling we got 3 ducks and two eels. Elmer Jafres (caught) got us to go and see the tracks where two men had been steeling their oysters we saw the fellows in the bay; he in the creek and knew them. Uncle Lewis killed a pig, weighed 270 lbs. Little Job Adams was surended at night he has been married 2 weeks now. The comror and gertrude left for chincoteague Friday, November 6, 1874 Clear. Wind N. W I went to get a few oysters and I eeled some and got 30 eels. Uncle Lewis planted out his oysters 135 bu. Father carted two load of hay from up the road and then went down to the thoroughfare and got a load of thatch. I went to the division at night and acted as O. S. sentinel. Thursday, November 5, 1874 Clear Wind South Thomas and I went eeling and gunning we got 60 eels but no ducks. Father carted hay got 4 loads. Uncle Lewis came home from barnegat. It takes the moon 27 d 7 h 43 m to go around the earth and 29 d 12 h 44 m from moon to moon or a lunar month. There are 26 small bones that forms the vertebra or backbone. Saturday, October 31, 1874 Clear Wind West Thomas and I went eeling this morning early down around the beaches we got 69 in all nice eels; we took our guns but did not see any thing to shoot the ducks aint about yet: much. Captain John Townsand's new schooner, to the point, was launched to-day. Friday, October 30, 1874 Clear Wind. West I went to the mill in the forenoon and in the afternoon I spread some hay and then went to the mill after the flour. Some one has overflowed the marshall. I went to the division at night. Thursday, October 29, 1874 Clear Wind South I husked corn and cleaned it up. I went to Mount Pleasant at night to hear Edwin H. Coles give a lecture on the underground railroad which was very interesting. Simon Lake's horse ran away last night while he was in the church. I appears that Mark R. Boen and Ezra Adams took the horse to go out riding when some one ran into them and upset the wagon and knocked the horse down. he got up broke loose and ran away they found her up to the Joslin place this morning Ruben Job Babcock they say ran into them in breast of Jesse Boens place. I husked corn and then went to absecon with Thomas towards night and there was a barrel of flour there for Aunt Harriet in care of Father so we brought it down. I sent for a pair of long gum boots by Bill Adams. Monday, October 26, 1874 Clear Wind S. E I husked corn in the forenoon in the afternoon I went down to G. H. Williams and got my pictures taken 2 on tin for 50 cts 4 on paper $1.00. I paid for them. Luke Sooy came here in the morning and wanted Father to go to barnagat with him and he would let him have half of the boat for $3.50. He went. they started about 8 Oc P.M I went up to Elmer D. Sooy's he is getting right smart. Sunday, October 25, 1874 Clear Wind East We went up to the marshal place and around in the forenoon I went to salem afternoon. To salem and then up to Mount Pleasant at night. Saturday, October 24, 1874 Foggy Wind East I husked corn all day I went over to Uncle Jesse's after supper and staid a while. Friday, October 23, 1874 Foggy in the morning clear the rest of the day. Wind East. I husked corn all day. I went to the division at night; they sold a chest that belonged to the Union League be-fore it went down. I took a walk down the road befor Division time. It has been vary smoky this last day or two Thursday, October 22, 1874 Foggy in the morning. Clear after that. I husked corn and then went to the creek and got some oysters for dinner I husked corn afternoon. I went down to the institute at night. Aunt Hannah went away this afternoon up to Aunt Lenora's. Wednesday, October 21, 1874 Clear Wind N & East I went a gunning and eeling I got 21 eels and no duck and some oysters the wind came around N E on the flood tide. I husked some corn after I came home. The tug got aground so she could not get off till tonight. I went down to the institute at night. Tuesday, October 20, 1874 Clear Wind S. West I culled potatoes forenoon. I went down to the Thoroughfare and got a load of hay P. M We had company Hans, Gad & Lenora. Han is going to stay a day or two. The institute opens to salem tonight Father went. A steamtug came to get Capt J. G. Adams vessel to take around to town to get her rigged, the tide was to low so she will have to wait. Bill Cordery expects to be ready for sea next week in the Estella Boice. I went up after Lenora in the morning; Flora took her home at night. Hen Somers has gone to mobile & expects to bring cotton on again. Monday, October 19, 1874 Clear Wind N. W I sorted potatoes in the forenoon. We finished digging potatoes in the afternoon. Noar Adams who is building a house up by Job's has quit work for the want of money I hear. Walace Adams is having a house put up close by Noar's. Hesidah is bricking up the cellar. Evin Jafres is doing the carpenter work. Bill Eldridge and Josephus stated to barnagat today. Uncle Lewis planted out his oysters today and went to barnegat. Thomas & Willie with him Sunday, October 18, 1874 Clear Wind N. W I went to the funeral of Mrs Ingersoll in the forenoon. I went to salem School afternoon. I went to Mount Pleasant at night. Uncle Lewis came home from barnagat this afternoon, he got a load. The wind blew hard. Frank Champion went with Emma Lace. Thomas has got to go to the river next week. Snyder Preached to Mounts in the evening on the subject of temperance. he delivered a very beautiful sermon. he mostly can do that. D. S. Lake Saturday, October 17, 1874 Clear Wind S. W and warm. I dug potatoes most all day they are very few. Father carted 3 load of hay and then carted the potatoes and some corn down. St John's is to have a supper for their preacher Rev Henry Watson this evening. Mrs Ingersoll is to be buried tomorrow at 10 Oc A.M. at salem. Uncle Jesse has commenced to dig the celar to his new house on the S.W. corner by the turnpike. Friday, October 16, 1874 Clear Wind S W I mowed a load of hay down to the bottom in the morning, and carted hay the rest of the day. I went to the division at night Anna Leb Steelman was up here to dinner she came over from Sculls, where she staid all night. Stultz took her home in the afternoon. In the afternoon we carted 4 load of hay from off the strip. Mrs. Ingersoll died this morning. There was some frost this morning the first we have had. Monday, October 12, 1874 Clear Wind West I mowed in the forenoon and in the afternoon. we dug sweet potatoes. Aunt Harriet and the pickers went up picking cranberries. Uncle Lewis and Waron went to Barnagat or started to barnagat oystering. Sunday, October 4, 1874 Clear Wind North I went to salem in the afternoon and Mount Pleasant at night. A receipt for shortcake 1 teacup full of lard 1 table spoon full of salt if it is mixed wither with water not so much salaratus as if mixed with sour milk. Saturday, October 3, 1874 Clear Wind North then around South Father bought 41 bu of Job T. C. Risley and John Adams at 35 cts a bushel and planted them with those out of the sloop. Father went to atlantic in the afternoon and I done nothing of much account wind South at night Friday, October 2, 1874 Clear Wind S. W. We came home without planting out our oysters because the wind blew to hard. I went and took grandmother over to atlantic to see Aunt Hannah, Ann, Ble(the rest is unreadable) who is very bad with typhoid fever and then I went to a store and bought me a suit of clothes. came off alone she staid on till tomorrow. I went to the division at night Thursday, October 1, 1874 Clear Wind West We went and oystered on Stitce's bed first then up to the mouth of middle river. then to down rock pint then Hen and the rest put the mainsails on the sloop and we went aboard to see if they were going home. they were. Wesley came aboard and then we started came down to the inlet and up to turtle gut when we anchored and turned in till 12 Oc when we run up to the creek then slept till morning. wind S W and blowing hard. we got 16 bu of oysters. Wednesday, September 30, 1874 Squally Wind W we left the creek in Han's sloop for the river about 9 Oc with single reef and bonnet out of the gib she leak so that we had to pump and bail when we got to the inlet we stopped to tie in 2 reef when a squall came and upset the Henry J. May in the main channel she drifted on to a bar and when the tide fell they righted her. 2 or 3 others was upset besides. we staid where we was and corked as long as we could see. We started up the river about 9 Oc got there about 1 Oc. Wind N yet Tuesday, September 29, 1874 Rainy Wind N & E Thomas and I went gunning down by the thoroughfare. we got one mink and a dunkeydoo then came up to the bottom and got 1 yellowleg and a muskrat.
