message exchange ... BEGIN 13 Jun 2021 To : Nancy Heath Subject : Re: Henry Diltz probate file I'm about the same confused. :) Ironically, Nancy, while answering your original message it occurred to me that Henry of Kingwood was the son of Henry of Amwell. But, when I looked further into that possibility I couldn't find anything convincing. My notes say Henry Peter DILTS (1712-1787, the older of the two Henrys) is the son of Wilhelm DILS and Eulalia THOMAS. But, that info came from another researcher for whom I do not have a name nor contact info. So, take it for what it's worth. I have the older Henry (1712-1787) as being buried in Larison's Corner Cemetery. That info comes from Donna Helen Tharp . (It seems to me that I tried writing to Donna fairly recently and received no response.) Something that is puzzling to me from your summary ... in the will of Henry DILTS of Amwell dated 16 Jun 1784 your summary says "Daughter Anne, the wife of executor Paul Cool [Kuhl], was to be paid the same amount, on the same terms as her sister Mary Bodine. Henry’s will specified, however, that if Anne died before her husband Paul without any children, her share should be returned to the estate and divided among the surviving daughters." My notes (per "The Kuhl Family of Hunterdon County, New Jersey" by Michael Gesner and John William Kuhl in 2012) names one child of Paul COOL/KUHL & Anne DILTS: Mary, b 1777, mar Philip H CASE 1805, d 1861. However, looking at the will of Paul COOL/KUHL made in 1825 I see no mention of any children. I am going to concur with your summary concluding that Henry of Kingwood was the son of Henry of Amwell. Also, I think "The Kuhl Family of Hunterdon County, New Jersey" is in error saying Mary is the daughter of Paul COOL/KUHL & Anne DILTS since I see no basis. Marshall Date: Sat, 12 Jun 2021 21:09:35 -0400 From: Nancy Heath To: Marshall Lake Subject: Re: Henry Diltz probate file Marshall, I'm attaching a summary I wrote of the two Henry Diltes, using the information in the probate files as well as the other information I've collected from deeds and other court records. I have concluded that Henry of Kingwood (file# 1372J) was the father of Henry of Amwell (file# 1414J). Comparing what I have gleaned from these records to what you sent me, I believe that your notes actually conflated the two Henrys. I don't have any information about their wives other than their first names, Anna and Julianna, so I can't speak to that. But I do have reliable lists of the children of each Henry. Your notes state that Henry Peter DIlts was the son of Wilhelm Dils and Eulalia Thomas. If this is referring to Henry DIlts the father, I have no reason to doubt it, since I have no information about his parents. However, if it is referring to the younger Henry, I don't think it is accurate. The Henry buried at Larison's Corner cemetery appears to be the younger Henry, whose administrator ("Urie") was appointed in May 1787. Sarah Dilts Lair, wife of John and daughter of Henry and Julia Dilts, died in 1852 and is buried at Sandy Ridge cemetery. There is a photo of her grave stone on Findagrave (memorial 67846682). There is yet a third Henry Dilts, who owned land in Locktown that adjoined that of the younger Henry. His land is shown as "H. Dilts" on the second page of the diagram of the division of Henry's land. I am baffled as to how he fits in, but I know he must, since his history is interrelated with that of the other Henrys. This Henry (1762-1849) was married to Hannah, and their grave markers in the Locktown Baptist cemetery indicate that both were longtime members of the Baptist church there. A deed recites that he purchased a 100-acre lot from the heirs of Edward Stevenson; Stevenson was the man who Juliana Dilts married after the death of her husband. This Henry and Hannah were the parents of Peter H. Dilts, a J.P. in Amwell, whose name we kept running across in our latest indexing project. I'm still working on this one. Unfortunately I haven't found a death record, a will, or a probate file for him, other than the appointment of Peter H. Dilts as administrator for his estate. Now are you less or more confused? I need to study more in depth. I have Henry Peter DILTS (1712 - 11 May 1787) marrying first Anna KAES and second Julianna STEVENSON. I don't have any locations other than Henry being buried in Larison's Corner Cemetery which is in Amwell Twp. Perhaps all the children were born to Anna KAES, and Julianna renounced being the administratrix? I have Henry's parents as Wilhelm DILS & Eulalia THOMAS. Could Urie be the same person as Henry's mother, Eulalia? If so, she would have been pretty old. Could Urie be a daughter of Henry DILTS? I have the children of Henry Peter DILTS as Philip, Hendrick, Mary, Sarah, Catherine, Peter & Anna. Nothing close to Urie, but keep in mind I'm confused and this info could be in error. Could Urie be a grandaughter of Henry DILTS? I don't have any data for any grandchildren of Henry Peter DILTS. Could Urie be a sister of Henry Peter DILTS? I don't have any info on other possible children of Wilhelm DILS & Eulalia THOMAS. The other Henry DILTS I have as Heinrich DILS (d 1788) who married Anna ------. Their daughter, Anna, married Paul KUHL. I don't have any other children for Heinrich DILS & Anna ------. Paul KUHL and Anna KAES were cousins. After gleaning over the attachments I don't see anything to indicate the identity of Urie DILTS. What is the relationship of Lawrence KEMPLE, and his role in the estate? He is not mentioned in the Letters of Administration, but he is named in an obligation alongside Urie DILTS which seems to be naming the administrators. I think you indicated that the one you were interested in was Henry Diltz of Kingwood, but I wasn't sure, so I'm sending you both of them (the other is Henry DIlts of Amwell, who died about the same time). One thing puzzles me about the Kingwood file. That Henry died intestate, and Urie Diltz was named administratrix - definitely a female. But the file names his widow as Julianna Stevenson (late Diltz). It seems unlikely that a female other than his widow would be named to administer the estate, but I also can't see the name Urie as another form of Julianna. I'd be interested in your thoughts on that. Hope you can learn something about your Dilts connection -- Nancy END
