As I researched this Nicholas, I found his marriage the "Geneva Gazette" published in Geneva, Ontario Co., NY.  It reads "Lake, Nicholas married "within a few days" Oracy Lamb in Snell.  (pub 1 Nov 1809).  I also found the autobiography written by John H. Lake (records of the Reorganized LDS Church), "My father, Nicholas Lake, and mother, Oracy Lamb, were married October 9, 1809, in Yates County, New York”.  I sent both of these sources to Jean, who responded that Orissa must have married a Lamb prior to her marriage to Nicholas. So, after further research I found an Abstract of Steuben Co. Will Book II:73 cited in "Settlers of Beekman Patent, Vol 7:  Amos Lamb of Wayne, Steuben Co., NY wd 1 Jun 1818; wp 23 Jul 1827.  He named wife Mary; sons "Dexter, Artamus, and Jonathan".  Daughters "Ama, Fanny, Orasa Lake, Diana Smith and Sally Forgenson".  I researched Amos Lamb, and found him living in Jerusalem, Vernon, Benton and Wayne, New York between 1802-1818 from Tax Rolls and census.  From notes I found regarding the 1810 Ontario and Steuben census: “ Ontario County towns of Benton, Jerusalem, Middlesex and Naples; and in the Steuben County towns of Reading and Wayne. Thus all the area of modern Yates County is covered, plus parts of parent towns now in other counties.  By the year 1810 the settlement of the county was more than 20 years old, and several of the towns had enough population to have been formally organized. Jerusalem had its modern boundaries except for the Bluff Point peninsula, still part of the Steuben County town of Wayne.  Benton was organized in 1803 as the town of Vernon; the name had already been used the previous year in Oneida County and in 1808 it was changed to Snell by the state legislature, after a state senator from Montgomery County. The local people found this an unsuitable solution to the problem, and soon afterward met at Luman Phelps' inn in Penn Yan to make up a petition asking that the name be changed to Benton, after Levi Benton, one of the county's early settlers and the first in township 8 in the first range. The legislature accepted the change in April 1810, just in time for the census to bear the new name.” LAND RECORD:  10 Jun 1813 Assessment roll of Real and Personal Estate in the town of Benton In the County of Ontario.  Lake Nicholas  House & 145 ac; 1160RE;  90PE:  1250TOT;  .89tax So, based on her being named a daughter of Amos Lamb in his will, I still maintain that her maiden name was Lamb, not Van Dusen.   Annette END
