Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2018 17:07:50 -0700 From: Annette Truesdell BEGIN Henry Lake who married Jemima Waldo was the son of Thomas Lake and Michel Williamson. From his military records: MILITARY: Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files: Lake, Henry - S10974, NY Line, sol lived at Cambridge in Albany Co., now Washington Co. NY at enl and also srv as a sub for his father Thomas Lake, sol appl 15 Oct 1832 at Plainfield in Ostego Co. NY aged 71. Sol's daughter, Miss Lucretia Lake was of Ames in Montgomery Co. NY in Mar 1851 and sol was dependent upon her. 1840 CENSUS of Pensioners, Montgomery County, New York: Pages 87-88. Canajoharie, Henry Lake, 73. NOTE: Per "GEN OF WALDO FAMILY": "He was a farmer. They lived at Plainfield, Otsego, Co., NY and later removed to Ames; but they may have first lived at Hoosick, Rensselaer Co., NY since their son Phipps Waldo was born there according to an old family record in the possession of his dau Sarah and perhaps all the children were born there, though other family records say they were all born at Plainfield. Henry Lake who was married to Mariah Gui/Gowey only had one child, Nicholas, that we can document. If they had more children, there is no record for them. From Henry's probate records: DEATH: Will written 2 Mar 1799, Town of Hoosick, County of Rensselaer, NY. "appoint, and ordain my friend Garet Lake (note - Garret Lake was Henry's nephew and a son of Jacobus Lake) of Cambridge, County of Washington and State of New York Afors-d my Executor to this my last Will and Testament.) Viz I give and bequeath unto my Beloved Wife Mary all and Singular my Lands mefsuages and Tenements with all my Household furniture, Goods, Chattles, Debts and moveable Effects, which I may have at my decease In the aforesaid Town, County and State Afores-d or elsewhere, during her natural Life, .. And at the decease of the said Mary my Wife, I do leave and Bequeath unto Nicholas, Polly, Hannah and Henry Leake, Children lawfully begotten by Henry Leake Junior my Grandson; All and singular my lands, Mefsuages, and Tenements, Goods, Chattles, debts and moveables Effects; that may remain at the decease of the said Mary my Wife." ..I also leave and bequeath unto Nicholas Lake my son, the sum of One dollar and Twenty five cents..." wp 27 Jun 1799. Wit. Aaron T. Luskens, George Bowen, Elisabeth Cornell. It is assumed that the term "Junior" as it applies to the grandson named in the will means younger, differentiating him from Henry (the elder) who is writing the will. The reasoning behind this is the naming pattern of Henry Junior's children, naming the eldest son after his father, Nicholas. Information about Nicholas Lake, son of Henry the elder, is sketchy and comes from non-primary records: BIRTH: Named in will of father, Henry Lake, wd 2 Mar 1799. Born c1740-1750, prob in NJ. MARR: 1769 to Catharine Van Deusen per letter written in 1910 by Garret S. Lake to Benjamin L. Noyes. Their only known child as named in the letter, and in will of grandfather Hendrick/Henry Lake was a Henry, b. 1770. The assumption that this was the only marriage and/or children of Nicholas Lake may not be accurate. The statements made in G.S. Lake's letter were made over 100 years after the fact. In addition, other "facts" cited in the letter have been found to be in error. DEATH: Records of Patricia M. Keyes, Lake/Leake Newsletter, vol II, #1, March 1995 cites his death as c1772, however since Nicholas is named in will of his father, Hendrick Lake, wd 2 Mar 1799 this seems unlikely. Was left "the sum of One dollar and Twenty five cents; to be paid when demanded after my (Henry's) decease". This implies he was thought to still be living in 1799. He is also probably one of the bondsman named in the 1783 estate administration of his grandmother, Mary Johnson Lake. His father Henry was the administrator. LAND RECORDS: assume him to be same Nicholas Lake found in following land record. 12 Apr 1789 - LDS film 469933, v.I - between Nicholas Lake of Hoosic, Co. of Albany and Stephen Sprague of Co. of Albany for L180, 1/2 of Lot #162, total lot being 132 acres, in Patent of Pittstown; wit. Harall Shepard, Betsy Shepard. 2 Apr 1794 instrument presented to Israel Thompson, Judge; recorded 10 Feb 1795. Nicholas' son, Henry (Jr.) married Sarah McNeil and removed his family to Cayuga, NY, with their children later settling in Howell, MI. As a note, the Garret S. Lake who wrote the letter to Benj. Noyes is Milt Lake's ancestor.
