END from ancestry.com 6 Dec 2021 BEGIN Garret Lake, b. c1759 from PAF notes of AFTruesdell 17 Mar 2016 BIRTH: Identified in Land Petitions as the son of Thomas Lake, UEL. In the 1813 Montague census his age is listed between 50-60 yrs old. Given the baptismal dates of the other children in the family, Garret's birth would have to be 1759 or 1760. DEATH: Will dated 17 Jan 1816. He is not listed in the 1817 census. LDS FILM #1312274, Leeds/Grenville Probate records: "The Last will and testament of Garret Lake of the Township of Montague, district of Johnstown and Province of Upper Canada. I give and bequeath all my property real and personal of whatever sort it may consist of whether land, cattle, money, notes or bank accounts or empliments to be equally devided between my wife Rosannah Lake, my sons Garret and Nicholas Lake, my daughters Sarah Lake and M__h_l (prob Michal) McCrea, wife of Thomas McCrea all of the aforesaid township of Montague. (Note: "Hist of Leeds and Grenville" by Thad.Leavitt names Thomas McCrea's wife as "Sarah".) I likewise nominate, constitute and appoint Daniel Burritt of the township of Marlborough in the aforesaid district of Johnstown, Esquire, my sole and last executor of this my last will and testament and recommend my soul to the mercy of God that gave it. _____whereof I have set my hand and seal to this my last will and testament." Dated 17 Jan 1816, wit by Stephen Burritt and Abraham Lake. MARRIAGE: 1st) Harligen DRC records a baptism 16 Sep 1787 of "Annathe" to "Garret Lake" and his wife "Gerthe". The age of Garret's children named in his will and the Montague census records imply that Garret was married previously. Assume "Gerthe" to be mother of his older children. Children assumed to be Annathe; a son b. c1788 ; Michal; Garret. MARR: 2nd) Mrs. Rosanna Kelly, c1812. Assumed to be widow of Lt. Martin Kelly who served in the Grenville Militia in 1803 along with Abraham Lake. Known children Sarah; Nicholas. NOTE: It is possible that Garret was married previous to either of these. He was born in c1759. It is probable that he could have married and had children as early as 1780. Also, if Garret is indeed the same as found in the 1810 Genesee Co., NY census, then he could have married a wife in 1809 who died before he returned to Wolford by 1812. HISTORY: CENSUS: 1790 Albany Co., NY. Assumed to be the "Gerrit T. Lake" found in Hoosick Town census next to "Henry T. Lake", who is most probably his brother. Gerrit T. Lake 1 male +16. 1 male under 16 (could be a first son who died before will written or was already provided for). 1 female (wife). CENSUS: 1800 Exeter, OTSEGO NY CENSUS, pg 48A. Assuming "Garret Lake" of Otsego Co. to be this Garret. There is stronger evidence for this assumption. Garret's older brother, Henry, had moved his family from Hoosick to Otsego Co. by 1797. In a land transaction in 1797 in Richfield, Otsego Co., Henry has purchased a tract of land and "Garret Lake" is one of the witnesses. On page 48 of the Plainfield, Otsego census appears Henry and John Lake and on 48A of Exeter, Otsego Co. census (5 miles east of Plainfield) are Garret and James Lake. It would seem that the brothers Garret, John and James were residing near Henry before removing to Canada between 1802-1809. Note: from"Military minues of the Council of Appointment of the State of New York 1783-1821" - "...on the report and recommendation of the adjutant general, having though it proper to establish a company of light infantry and three new companies in the regiment of militia in the county of Otsego commanded by Lt. Col. Francis Henry; therefore, resolved, that the following officers be and they are hereby appointed...Garret Lake, lieutenant.. of the new companies..." 18 Apr 1800. CENSUS: 1800 Otsego Co., NY, pg 48A: Garret Lake. 1 male 0-10 (prob Garret Jr.). 1 male 10-15 (could be an older son prev found in 1790 census). 1 male 26-45 (Garret). 1 female 0-10 (Michal - note she is not enumerated in the extraction but is on the original film.) 1 female 26-45 (wife). NOTE: Garret is not among the inhabitants of Montague in 1810. It is possible that for a short time, he removed to New York again and is enumerated in Genesee (Ontario) Co., along with an Isaac Lake: CENSUS: 1810 Murray, Genesee Co., NY Garret Lake 10101-00100 1 male -10 (unknown child) 1 male 16-26 (prob Garret Jr.) 1 male 45+ (Garret) 1 female 16-26 (assume another wife of Garret. His dau, Michal has married Thomas McCrea in 1810. Or, could be the wife of Garret Jr. who would be 18 or 19 yrs of age and the male child is theirs. If so, the wife and child may have died since Garret Jr. is found in the 1817 Wolford census alone.) NOTE: if above census is for Garret, his wife and child have probably died and he returns to Wolford by 1812. 1812 - Assessment for the Township of Wolford and those annexed for the year 1812: Lake, Garret, 90Uncult, 10Cult CENSUS: 1813 MONTAGUE census: Garrard Lake, married 50-60; 1 woman (Rosannah); 3 male children (prob Martin Kelly, John Kelly, Garret Lake); 1 female child (Margaret Kelly). 1814 Assessment for the Twp of Wolford: Lake, Abraham , 140 Unclut, 40 Cult, 3hrs, 0oxen, 4milkcow, 3ygncow. 2 houses (1 sq or hewn on two sides, stones one & 1 stone house) Lake, Garrett, 188Uncult, 12Cult, 0hrs, 2oxen, 2milkcow, 1ygncow. 1815 - Assessment for the Township of Wolford and those annexed for the year 1815: Lake, Abraham, 100Uncult, 50Cult, 0hrs, 2oxen, 4cows, 0ygncows Lake, ______ 180Uncult, 20Cult, 0hrs, 1oxen, 2cows, 4yngcows (this is probably Garret) Lake, James, 125Uncult, 75Cult, 0hrs, 2oxen, 2cows, 3ygncow Lake, Michael, 0Uncult, 0Cult, 0hrs, 0oxen, 2cows, 0ygncow CENSUS: 1817 WOLFORD census: (Garret has died 1816/17) Rosannah Lake, 34; Nicholas Lake, 1; Martin Kelly, 11; Margaret Kelly, 7; John Kelly, 7; Sarah Lake, 2; Garret Lake, 23. (Also listed were Abraham Lake, 41; Mary Lake, 33; Evaline, 6; Catharine, 4; Rebecca, 2; male Lake, 1; Michael Lake, 78.) MILITARY: may be the same as "Garret Lake" cited in book, "State of Vt: Rolls of the soldiers in the Rev. War, 1775-1783", John E. Goodrich. Rutland, Vt. 1904. (22,2,927p.):407, 437, 581, 606. Need to see data from book. Another possibility is that the military record is for Garret Stryker Lake, son of Jacobus Lake. aftruesdell originally shared this 5 years ago story Public Comments (from all member trees) Beth Rieman Here it is---Thomas's son, Garret in 1809 Upper Canada document/land grant! His father IS Thomas after all! Garret Stryker still belongs to some Jacobus, but not the Jacobus who is Thomas's brother. Additionally, this Garret is James Lake's (1752-1842) brother who is often confused as being his father! :) 3 years ago END
