"Early Germans of New Jersey", Theodore Frelinghuysen Chambers, 1895 BEGIN Garret Lake was the first of the name in Morris Co. His descendants still live on the original property. Silvester Lake owns the original homestead. Garret was a Quaker, and came from Hunterdon Co. He was the son of Garret, who died 1781 in Amwell township, and the grandson of Thomas, who died 1765. The Rev. John W. Lake is a grandson of Garret. END deeds ... BEGIN Hunt Deed Book 4:204 (25 Apr 1801) Garret Lake of Amwell, yeoman, & wife Margaret to John Heath, Jr., of same. END From: Nancy BEGIN Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 19:29:56 EDT Sometimes Garrison was Garretson. The problem that I see is that of Garret Lake: only one son is named and that is a Garret b. 1777 and m. Margaret Hann so there must have been many others because families were so large. In addition, the first Garret had brothers and sisters one of whom was Thomas who was older and John who may have been younger. Since it is Thomas and Jane (Gen. I) Garret and _____ and his 7 siblings, incl. Thomas and John. (Gen II) Garret and Margaret Hann (Gen III) (no other siblings named) Peter and Elizabeth Waldorf and his 7 siblings (Gen IV) Jacob and Phebe B. McCracken and 2 sisters (Gen V) my line I think Lake is English, but they intermarried in the earlier generations with the Dutch and some records were in Dutch with John Lake as Jan Leake. Thomas Lake married a Dutch woman or at least a woman whose name was listed in the Dutch spelling. Don't forget that the Dutch controlled the NJ/NY area for quite a while before the English government did and a lot of the churches used Dutch (low German) as their language of record. Plus the records were in the language of the person recording the information---whatever language the recorder was literate in. I don't think the Lakes were PA Dutch at all. I have found that when families intermarried, the most lately immigrated nationality dominated the family. Garret Lake, b. 1777, was the son of Garret whose will was probated in 1781 so maybe he was an only child. Perhaps his father died in the Rev. War. But his father did have a brother John, b. ca 1750-60? Did you notice in The Lake Family that on page 17, it mentions that a Daniel Lake* of Hunterdon Co. left a will dated 25 Sept 1775 and mentions a son Abram (Abraham). It is assumed that he was from the Staten Island branch thru Daniel, son of the original Thomas Lake. *This Daniel's will mentions sons William, Abram, John, Thomas and Timothy. Zenas Lake b. 1819 and _______ However, Alvah Decker Lake married Sarah Cordelia Mikesell who was of Austrian descent, but joined the Seventh Day Adventists. (The rest of her family were of various Protestant faiths.) When my grgrandmother Lucy died she was a Methodist, but Sarah, her mother, helped raise Lucy's 6 surviving children, some of whom became Seventh Day Adventists like their grandmother. Let me tell you that that was some conflict of interest considering Lucy's widower Joseph Allen Snook, Sr. then married a Cora Poyer Savercool who my grandmother said ran a "whore house"---thus, my grandmother and her sibs hated Cora their stepmother! Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 14:22:23 EDT I have reviewed all the documents on Zenas Lake's grandson George Washington Lake and have to admit (sigh) that it is inconclusive as to who was the father of George. My original thought must have been that since George named his son Isaac N. Lake that that was his father and I then misread Jay's info---I guess. It does seem most likely that George was the son of Joseph P. Lake and his wife Sarah Fatout. I have to wonder what other children belonged to Joseph and Sarah. One thought that did occur to me was that George may have named his son for his uncle as his uncle may have been his guardian after Joseph died and perhaps a court record names Isaac H. Lake as the guardian of George! I found this in another line so maybe I will pursue this idea. Also, I do believe that Zenas Lake, son of John, was most likely the CT Lake line as in 1790 a Reuben Lake appears there! Perhaps this John Lake was not even from my Lake line or, as I believe, but have not proven, all the NJ Lakes came from the CT line of Henry Lake and Alice the Hanged. END
