"A HISTORY OF LONG ISLAND FROM ITS EARLIEST SETTLEMENT TO THE PRESENT TIME" PETER FOSS, LL. D. VOL II 1902 BEGIN DANIEL STILLWELL. Daniel Stillwell, deceased, was born at Gravesend, Long Island, March 10, 1797, and was a lineal descendant of Nicholas Stillwell, who founded the family in America, taking up his abode in the new world in 1638. His parents were Jacques and Lena (Lake) Stillwell. In the place of his nativity he spent his entire life and in the pursuit of fortune followed farming. He was trained to that vocation in his early youth, and throughout his entire business career gave his time and attention to the supervision and active work of the farm. His methods were progressive and practical, and the well-tilled fields yielded to him a golden harvest for the care and labor bestowed upon them. In all business transactions he was straightforward and honorable, and thus he gained a comfortable competence. Mr. Stillwell married Eve Voorhees, who was born October 7, 1807, and they became the parents of the following children: Lena; John V., Jacques D., Elizabeth and Daniel. The father's death occurred April 26, 1863, and though many years have since passed he is remembered by those who knew him as a man of sterling worth and a valued citizen of his community.
