from ancestry.com 6 Dec 2021 BEGIN John Lake History 1772-1837 from PAF records of Annette F. Truesdell Rev. 2013 BIRTH: Bible record from Burton Collection, Detroit Public Library. DETROIT SOC. FOR GEN RESEARCH, v. 26, #2, Winter 1962: "John Lake Family Record contributed by Alice D. Serrell, Rochester, Michigan. This record is hand-drawn with colored ink-wash in a formal design on paper mounted on cloth. It is now faded, shows old water marks and is beginning to crumble. The information appears to have been recorded at various times. The Masonic emblem is part of the design." NOTE: I contacted Alice Serrell, who was 93 years old and living in Florida in 1990. She said she was not related to the LAKE family and remembers the bible being part of an estate sale of the family of Nelson Gagnon in Michigan in the 1960's. Alice donated it to the Detroit Hist. Society. It is still not known what the relationship is between the Gagnon family and the Lake family. The bible record reads: John Lake Born August 20 1772 Sarah Mathews Born Sept 18 1773 Married 21 January 1792 Births: Michal Lake Born April 23 1794 Obe____h Lake Born March 23 1796 (Obediah) James Lake Born Oct 7th 1797 Daniel Lake Born January 15 1799 Ascenath Lake Born June 10 1801 Nicholas Lake Born 14 June 1803 William Lake Born 16th April 1805 John Lake born 1 Jul 1807 Poly Lake Born 2 ___tob___1809 Sally Lake Born Jan 9 1811 Henrietta Lake Born Sept 13 1815 Armina Lake Born Dec 8 1818 Deaths: Ascenath Mathews Died 25 Jul 1805 Hannah ______ Died 23 Nov 1805 (have not yet identified who this is) Sarah Lake, my wife, departed this life Dec 8th 1818 in the 45th year of her age. John Lake departed this life July 14 1837 in the 66 year of his age. Polly Lake died 7 Aug 1810. MARR: 1) Sarah Mathews/Matthews dau of Obadiah Mathews and his first wife Asenath. "Obadiah Matthias" of Hartford, Washington Co., NY names the "children of my daughter Sarah Lake" as heirs in his will dated 16 Mar 1825. Proximity of Hartford to Cambridge, NY and the name of John and Sarah's oldest son being "Obediah" are reasonable evidence that Obadiah Matthews is the father of Sarah Matthews Lake. Since Sarah died in 1818, her children would be entitled to her portion of the estate. The name of John and Sarah's oldest child, "Michal", being the name of Thomas Lake's wife also supports the premise that this John Lake is the son of Thomas Lake and Michal Williamson. MARR: 2) c1835 Ann or "Nancy"_________ , named in a Nottawasaga land petition. DEATH: Bible records John's death as 14 Jul 1837. On 25 Sep 1837, Petition of "Nancy Lake" for land as "widow of John Lake deceased." This petition is for land in Nottawasaga, Simcoe Co., Ontario that had been improved by John Lake. Petition states that John Lake "was accidently killed by the fall of a tree in the said township of Nottawasaga in the month of July last while working in the woods endeavoring to make a home for himself and large family... Petitioner prays that she may be allowed to locate as UE right upon... Lot 12 in the 5th Conc of the said township... Recommended 15 Feb 1838".
