From: Craig Kanalley Date: Fri, 8 Jul 2016 23:58:24 -0400   BEGIN Very exciting update here on finding another member of our Lake family through DNA. It's back to the Chromosome 18 segment for my Uncle Tim Kanalley (father's brother). A refresher -- my Uncle Tim inherited a segment at the end of Chromosome 18 that I have been able to identify as Lake DNA. A Helen Wiley and Tony Muma - both descendants of Sarah (Lake) Ward of Ernestown - also inherited this exact same segment.  My Uncle Tim (and I) descend of Mary (Lake) Friel, the sister of Sarah (Lake) Ward.  Both were children of Christopher and Susannah Lake. Now I have a new match thanks to AncestryDNA who was happy to upload to Gedmatch (Kit #A745389) who also inherited this same segment.  Her name is Gaylene Weideman.  I suspected a Lake connection as she descends of an Ann Lake born 1746 who married an Absalom Runyon and lived in Hunterdon, NJ.  Now that her Gedmatch upload has been completed, the suspected Lake link is confirmed as a Lake link.  She has the same segment on Chromosome 18 as Tim, Helen and Tony. Gaylene's ancestor Ann Lake born 1746 is a daughter of Daniel Lake and Elizabeth Sutphen of Gravesend.  Daniel Lake is a son of John Lake and Neeltje Claeszen. In other words, Ann Lake is the 1st cousin of Christopher Lake.  Their grandparents are John Lake and Neeltje Claeszen. So, we now have a segment of DNA on Chromosome 18 that not only can we identify as Lake DNA -- we can now identify this segment as John Lake & Neeltje Claeszen DNA.  It is a segment from 64.1 to 76.1 on Chromosome 18. END Date: Sun, 29 Jan 2017 05:11:44 +0000 (UTC) From: Wesley Johnston BEGIN The Problem There were two men named Christopher LAKE who were born about the same time very near each other's birthplace. Far too many online trees confuse these two men. This research note untangles them and their records. The bottom line is that these are the two men:   1755 Apr 6 (if he really died on his 65th birthday) - born Middlesex County, New Jersey - son of John LAKE and Margaret SNIDER - baptized 18 May 1755 at Six Mile Run in Somerset County, New Jersey - married Susannah (maiden name unknown) - Loyalist - died 6 Apr 1820 in Loughborough Township, Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada 1765 Oct 1 - born Egg Harbor, Gloucester County, New Jersey - eldest son of Daniel LAKE and Sarah LUCAS - moved to Cumberland County - married Mary (widow THOMAS) 2 Mar 1813 - moved to Salem County - no mention of role in Revolution (too yong) - apparently never left United States (His family is extensively covered in Adams and Risley (1915) which can be downloaded in its entirety at https://archive.org/details/genealogyof lakef00adam ) ............. both men descend from John Lake and Anne Spicer, if the Adams & Risley 1915 book is accurate, which it appears to be since it is very explicit about sources and quite willing to note where sources are word of mouth. END Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2019 11:10:10 -0500 From: Craig Kanalley [loyalist-lake-history] BEGIN I welcome anyone in our list who can share evidence on why Elizabeth Lake was a daughter of Christopher and Susanna. But I can say, confidently, location fits.  And the names....Elizabeth Lake and Daniel Walker had a Christopher Walker and Susanna Walker after they had John and Joshua Walker. But most importantly-from what I've seen- DNA evidence. My cousin Rita (in her 90s) is matching 4 of Elizabeth Lake Walker's descendants on AncestryDNA.   And their Shared Matches, which include Muriel Lake descendant of Aaron Lake, point to Lake for common ancestry.   I asked them all if they would consider uploading to gedmatch and no luck yet, fingers crossed!  Only one wrote back to me, to date, and I am in touch with him now. I am beginning to think Elizabeth Lake and Mary Lake *may have* been twins, as both were born about 1780 as best I can tell.  We have no reliable record of the exact date of birth for either of them, that I know of. END Craig Kanalley : Mar 06 2020 03:02PM -0500 BEGIN I am writing from the Toronto Public Library. I am up in Canada for a few days doing some research. In a hard-covered book titled *"Minutes of the Court of Quarter Sessions of the Peace for Mecklenburg/Midland District [Counties of Frontenac, Lennox & Addington, Hasintgs & Prince Edward], Volume 1, 1789 to 1790, 1794 to 1804, 1807 to 1816"* I found an interesting reference to Christopher Lake b.1755, who is an ancestor to some of us including Wesley and I. Christopher Lake was on *jury duty *in 1801! The court session was held on Oct. 14, 1801 in Kingston.. here is what is written about the case: CASE: The King on the prosecution of John Win vs. Henry Cassidy and John McLaughlin CHARGE: Assault and battery JURY: Andrew Boyce, foreman, Isaiah Vanorder, Andrew Miller, John Lake, James Hogle, Thomas Corner, Gideon Shurtliff, George Miller, Christopher Lake, Lewis Hartman, John Vanluven, Henry Storms PLEA: Not guilty WITNESSES: John Win, Thomas Cook, Philip Pember VERDICT: The jury withdrew to consider of their verdict; and having returned to court, say that the defendants Henry Cassidy and John McLaughlin are *guilty*. The court sentences Henry Cassidy to pay a fine of 5 pounds and John McLaughlin the sum of 10 shillings. END From: Craig Kanalley BEGIN Date: Mon, 6 Apr 2020 11:20:56 -0400 Shifting gears to Susannah Lake, wife of Christopher Lake UEL born 1755, who many of us descend of (though I know not all of us).. As I've written, I believe her maiden name was Susannah Cousins, and that she was a daughter of Joshua Cousins & Susannah Elliott...  The evidence is overwhelming, really, that the Cousins family is DNA-linked to us, through multiple of Joshua Cousins & Susannah Elliott's children.  Since they lived so close to White Creek / Hoosick, NY, just over the border in Dorset, Bennington Co, VT, and they had known links to White Creek / Hoosick / Cambridge, NY, including a daughter Rachel Cousins and her husband Jacob Van Curler who lived there (Jacob Van Curler who was Christopher Lake's 1st cousin, by the way), I do believe it all adds up. Well, yesterday, I see a new match on AncestryDNA for Susannah & Christopher descendant Rita Hart Flanagan, who is the 3rd great-granddaughter of Mary Lake Friel, and therefore the 4th great-granddaughter of Susannah and Christopher... This new match descends of Joshua Cousins' *AUNT* -- his father Jacob's sister -- Mary Cousins, born 1695 in Sherborn, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts to Abraham Cousins and Mary Eames.  Previously, we also have observed matches to Joshua Cousins' SISTER, Lydia Cousins who married John Mapes.  Now it brings us another generation further back and we have a good match. This would take the DNA trail back another generation, confirming back to Cousins/Eames and 1690s Massachusetts. This new match only matches for 12 centimorgans, which is small, HOWEVER (1) with Ancestry's Timber algorithm, I am confident it is a real match and not a false positive, (2) I see no other route for the connection in her well-researched tree, (3) The SHARED MATCHES (there are two 20cm+ for both Rita and this match) are Shared Matches themselves to Christopher/Susannah Lake-descended kits.  This suggests it's on track for a Cousins side link. I have reached out to this match to see if she will consider uploading to GEDmatch to give us more Cousins DNA (though very far back) to work with.  It would be interesting to see if the segment she matches on is already one of the other Cousins segments I've identified. So the case gets even stronger.  I keep piling on evidence + research with the DNA.  Again, there is no doubt Susannah was *related* to this Cousins family, certainly she was - I just need to be sure she fits as a daughter of Joshua Cousins & Susannah Elliott.  So far there is no reasonable doubt that she doesn't.  She fits the timeframe they would have had children (1750s/1760s) and there are gaps there for children and a lack of records.  And with the Van Curler tie in we are build on the FAN (Friends/Associates/Neighbors) Network for Susannah & Christopher *before* they went to Canada -- Rachel Cousins married Jacob Van Curler, Christopher's 1st cousin (Jacob's mother a Lake), and remember Arendt Van Curler did business with the Lake brothers way back, we saw that land record.  Not to mention there was a Sarah and Aaron Van Curler, a couple, in White Creek NY, and Susannah & Christopher had a Sarah and Aaron Lake.  Part of their network.  Could be related through both Susannah & Christopher, based on this. Just wanted to provide an update on that.  The Elliott side of things remains a mystery, but there may be a Dartmouth, MA connection that I have yet to figure out based on a lot of Dartmouth, Bristol Co, MA links to our Christopher/Susannah Lake-descended kits.  Certainly connected also, beyond a doubt, is the PAGE family and possibly the TUTTLE family.  Could be a female ancestor who ties us to those families. Craig Date: Mon, 6 Apr 2020 12:41:58 -0400 All, since we all have some extra times on hand with the Coronavirus (please be safe!), and there seems to be some interest in my latest update, here are some old notes that I did not share previously.  This is SPECULATION only at this point, but compelling evidence that supports that Sarah who married Aaron Van Curler in White Creek may have been a COUSINS also and a sister of Susannah.   This would mean Cousins sisters married Van Curler brothers, and it would explain Susannah and Christopher having an Aaron and Sarah themselves.... You can see by the dates I’d been sitting on these notes for a while, but it’s April 2020 and what I see below still rings true as a good possibility. Jan. 2019 I have growing evidence that Sarah who married Aaron Van Curler may have *also* been a Cousins (and at the very least, closely related to Susanna). Some trees list her maiden name as Barnhart, no sources or documentation attached whatsoever.  Most trees do not list a maiden name for her. This would confirm a long-time suspicion of mine that our Susanna and Christopher Lake had a close relationship with the Van Curler family - as there was that Sarah and Aaron Van Curler from White Creek NY, about the same age as them, and Susanna and Christopher had a Sarah and Aaron Lake. As we know, Christopher Lake was 1st cousins with Aaron Van Curler, whose mother was Mary Lake. At this point, I'm comfortable to say that I have strong DNA evidence that our Susanna was a Cousins, a daughter of Joshua Cousins and Susanna Elliott, and we've learned that Rachel Cousins (perhaps sister of our Susanna) married Jacob Van Curler (1st cousin of Christopher Lake).   And then there's Sarah who married Aaron Van Curler. She was born about 1750. As I said before, Joshua Cousins and Susanna Elliott had a huge gap from their marriage in 1747 and the first known child in 1756. There must be other children. Sarah would fit nicely into the gap. The records simply don't exist (or at least haven't been found yet)...  A will has not surfaced for Joshua Cousins; we don't even know for sure when he died. The Cousins family lived in New Fairfield, CT from 1747-1756, before coming up to Bennington Co, VT, and unfortunately nearly all of the New Fairfield records burned a fire, I've learned, records that would have included that time period. As we all know, women are especially hard to track as they change their names. So with all that said, I have new DNA evidence that Sarah was a Cousins too.  The dates fit, the locations fit, and descendants of Sarah and Aaron Van Curler are matching Rita Hart Flanagan.  I see a cluster of 3 shared matches descended of Sarah and Aaron Van Curler - with two of those matches living around Bennington VT today - that have *dicor, a descendant of Elizabeth Lake Walker as a Shared Match.   Now you might say, well of course, that's Lake DNA. (Since the Van Curlers descend of the Lakes.) BUT *dicor (who Rita matches on only one segment for 31cM) is a Shared Match for Lori Maxwell, who *does not* descend of the Van Curler or Lake family but does descend of Joshua Cousins & Susanna Elliott.  And *dicor is also a Shared Match for Thomas Cousins, who *does not* descend of the Van Curler or Lake family but does descend of Joshua Cousins & Susanna Elliott. In other words, I feel strongly that the DNA Rita & *dicor have in common is Susannah DNA, not Christopher DNA. I really wish *dicor would write back - she has not to date - I have asked if she'd upload to gedmatch for us. On top of that, while nearly all of the descendants on the Chr 1 segment descend of the Page, Cousins or Hewitt families, a segment that is pretty clearly from Susanna and not Christopher, one of them descends of Aaron Van Curler and Sarah.   More evidence that Sarah was a Cousins (or very closely related to Susanna). In fact, this is evidence that I once interpreted as maybe Susanna and Christopher were cousins themselves, you may remember, a while back. Now I could see why there's the appearance of that - they had relatives who married relatives. If true, that would mean that Joshua Cousins and Susannah Elliott had these children- 1. Sarah Cousins - married Aaron Van Curler (multiple descendants DNA match us) 2. Susannah Cousins - married Christopher Lake 3. Rachel Cousins - married Jacob Van Curler (just starting to research this branch) 4. Anna Cousins - married Bartemus Hewitt (multiple descendants DNA match us) 5. Jacob Cousins - married Cynthia Barto (multiple descendants DNA match us) By the way, if *dicor did upload to gedmatch, I have a feeling her 31 cM segment with Rita would be at the end of Chr. 2-- where Rita matches both descendants of Jacob Cousins and Cynthia Barto, and Sarah and Aaron Van Curler.  That would/could be the 2nd Cousins DNA segment identified, with Chr. 1 being the first. Also, the Chr 6 Myrtle Goodchild link with Audrey Mosher is looking more and more like Cousins DNA also - Audrey Mosher is a descendant of Anna Cousins and Bartemus Hewitt - because Audrey has roots in that eastern NY state / VT area, and Myrtle has multiple branches of her tree only recently coming over from the UK/Scotland, compared to Audrey's deep colonial roots.  The match to Audrey is on this side of the ocean. It supports Cousins. All of these Cousins cousins are appearing around the 6th-7th cousin range, so while pushing autosomal DNA to the limits, it also makes sense to get the results we're seeing - and it makes sense why not all of the Lake kits are matching these distant cousins. ---- More on this- (1/26/19) I've been reluctant to go down these road yet with you all, because I don't want to open a can of worms. But I've seen growing evidence already that Susanna may have had a sister Sarah who married Aaron Van Curler. And now I see that segment Chr. 2B with LA (likely Henrietta Lake Wood descendant) supports this-  (Casey Brown in bold is an Aaron and Sarah Van Curler descendant - but she also matches the Cousins - I don't think this is Lake DNA from Aaron, even though his mother was Mary Lake - I think this is Cousins DNA from Sarah / Susanna - Sarah's maiden name is NOT known and many trees erroneously list it Barnhart with no sources or documentation whatsoever - and of course, our Susanna and Christopher had an Aaron and Sarah - may have been another case of sisters marrying cousins, as Aaron was a 1st cousin of Christopher Lake --- remember a long time ago I speculated that Christopher and Susanna may have been cousins themselves?  If relatives married relatives, then that would create this appearance. We'd also have sisters, Sarah and Rachel Cousins, marrying brothers, Aaron and Jacob Van Curler.) A Laban Cousins states in the papers he knew Jonathan “since he was young.” Laban Cousins is a known son of Joshua Cousins and Susannah Elliott, born in 1761 in New Fairfield, CT Both went to Dorset Co, VT Jonathan & Patience Page were living in Hoosick(!), NY around 1780, same vicinity as our Christopher & Susannah Lake (White Creek/Hoosick)- they were neighbors. If Jonathan Page b1752’s mother was a Cousins (or an Elliott for that matter), he and Laban (and our Susannah) could be first cousins.  We DNA match Jonathan Page descendants on “Lake DNA” (these Pages never went to Canada), as well as Cousins descendants on some of the same segments. They are kin.  The maiden name of the mother  of Jonathan Page b1752 is not known. Keep in mind we are clearly DNA matching many of Laban Cousins’ siblings descendants, multiple segments.  In one old email to you all I wrote something to the effect of, “Our Lake kits are matching so many descendants of Joshua Cousins & Susannah Elliott that I am losing count.” Craig  Date: Tue, 7 Apr 2020 10:42:32 -0400 My final note related to Susannah (Cousins) Lake for now because I know she doesn't interest everyone in our group & I apologize, but it dawned on me ... Aaron Van Curler & Sarah "Barnhart" (according to many trees, but I have yet to see a source/evidence for her maiden name), lived in White Creek, NY, contemporaries of Christopher Lake & Susannah I have clear evidence that Sarah is DNA-related to Susannah.  Susannah descendants match Sarah descendants on DNA segments that also match the Cousins family.  So I suggested perhaps Sarah was a Cousins, and a sister of Susannah. Just realized it's possible that: 1. Maybe Sarah was a Barnhart - a name known in the White Creek NY / Bennington VT area - but her mother was a Cousins or Elliott, so she was still kin to Susannah - perhaps 1st cousins - in this scenario, we'd have Christopher Lake's 1st cousin Aaron Van Curler marrying Susannah's 1st cousin, sounds realistic 2. Maybe Sarah was indeed a Cousins, but her first husband was a Barnhart, and he died, and then she remarried Aaron Van Curler - and that is where the Barnhart comes in Both are plausible scenarios.  Regardless, I do have solid DNA evidence that she is kin to the Cousins family somehow.  And we know that Christopher & Susannah had children named Aaron and Sarah.  Yes, Aaron's mother was a Lake, but our Lake kits have Shared Matches to Aaron & Sarah Van Curler descendants who are NOT Van Curler or Lake descendants - they are only Cousins descendants.  That signifies a link through Susannah. I wrote to Lita, a Cousins descendant, several months ago. She uploaded to Gedmatch and wrote back to me on Ancestry today- Kit #ET7348864 Lita descends of Mary (Cousins) Adams born about 1693, daughter of Abraham Cousins and Mary Eames. As I have written many times I believe the Loyalist Lakes who descend of Christopher Lake born 1755 descend of Joshua Cousins, a grandson of Abraham Cousins and Mary Eames (through their son Jacob). I believe Christopher’s wife was Susannah Cousins, daughter of Joshua. Sure enough, Lita matches Rita Hart Flanagan - Mary Lake Friel Barrett descendant - on Chromosome 16, 52 to 59, while also matching Susan Taylor, another Mary Lake descendant, on Chr 16, 52 to 55, and they do triangulate. Rita and Susan descend of different Mary Lake grandchildren, Mary Moore and John Moore, adding to the likelihood this is indeed Mary Lake b.1780 DNA. So this has the appearance of another Cousins connection, again strengthening the case for Cousins DNA in Lake descendants. I have prepared a timeline of his life with question I hope some of you may be able to clarify. * 1755 - Christopher Lake was born April 6 1755 in New Jersey, USA. [from his death notice] * 1755 - Christopher was baptised May 18 1755 in Six Mile Run, Somerset, New Jersey, USA. Comment: Sixteenth Regiment [New York, Genealogical Records, 1675-1920]  I don't know the context of the Sixteenth Regiment. They do not appear to be in the area of The Battle of Bennington or The Battle of Saratoga? * 1777 -  August 16 The Battle of Bennigton was fought on a tract of land near Bennington owned by Christopher's neighbour Captain Hazard Wilcox.  Christopher resided within two miles of this land. They both joined to fight under the British standard under General Burgoyne. [1811 Affidavit by Christopher Lake for William Willcox] The Battle of Bennington, on August 16, 1777, formed part of the Saratoga Campaign. The battle was fought at Walloomsac, New York, ten miles northwest of Bennington, Vermont. If he was taken prisoner in October 1777 he must not have been held prisoner for long?  * In 1790 - Christopher is residing in Hoosick, Albany, New York, USA.  The family is comprised of 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, 3 females (all free white persons). [1790 US Census, population schedule, New York, Hoosick, Albany] * in 1795 - Christopher and his family moved to Canada. [1807 Land Petition No. 18] Note: After fighting on the side of the British, being taken prisoner and having faced suspicion of associating with the enemy Christopher continued to live in Albany for quite a while before moving to Canada. * 1797 - Christopher petitioned for land for himself, his wife and three children - John, Sarah & Aaron. [1979 Land Petition No. 30]    I am not sure the results of this petition. Maybe someone can clear this up for me? * 1807 - Christopher again petitions for land and states "That your Petitioner and family have constantly resided in this Province since the year 1795. That your petitioner served in Burgoynes Campaign in the year 1777 and was taken prisoner a few days before the convention at Saratoga, that your Petitioners distressed circumstances prevented him from coming into this province at an earlier period, that your petitioners family consists of seven children, the youngest being now of the age of sixteen years." York Feb 3 1807 "Christopher Lake of this Township of Ernest Town In which oath and saith that he has seven Children alive in this Province and that the youngest is of the age fifteen years. – signed Christopher Lake  Sworn before me this 17 day of Jan. 1807 at Ernest Town - Robert Clark"  [1807 Land Petition No. 18]  I have a couple of questions about this. (1) I have seen in online trees that Christopher Lake was taken prisoner in the Battle of Bennington. The Battle of Bennington took place August 16, 1777 and in this petition he states he was taken prisoner a few days before the Convention of Saratoga which took place October 18. The two Battles of Saratoga happened September 19 at Freeman's Farm and October 7 at Bemis Heights. I think it was more likely he was taken prisoner during the Battle of Saratoga. (2) Christopher claims on Jan. 17 1807 that his youngest child is 15 years old. Then on Feb 3 1807 his youngest child is 16 years of age. Which child would he be referring to that was born between Jan. 17 and Feb. 3 in 1791? * 1811 - Christopher is living in Loughborough [1811 Affidavit by Christopher Lake for William Willcox] Just an interesting note: I came across another mention of this Hazard Wilcox - "Philip Perry joined this militia group sometime in 1775, and died on August 1 of that year in an encounter with a Tory spy, Hazard Wilcox, in Bennington County.  This was a particularly tragic event; Philip and Hazard were apparently neighbors and friends, and they were also probably distant cousins." [https://iseekdeadpeopleblog.wordpress.com/2020/01/17/week-3-january-17-2020-bennington-county-vermont/ [iseekdeadpeopleblog.wordpress.com]] * 1820 - On April 6 Christopher died in Loughborough, Frontenac, Ontario, Canada. * There was some discussion about Christopher Lake signing the 1811 Affidavit with his mark. I just wanted to mention that the 1797 and 1807 Land Petitions have Christooher's written signature. END
