He is listed as born in South Brunswick, Middlesex County. His father is listed as Richard Lake (1764-1838) married to Hannah. According to the record I located here Benjamin and Hannah had 13 children (My note - "Hannah" in the line above should be "Sarah". - MEL) (Deborah, Hannah, Richard, Nancy, Amy, David, John, Benjamin, Nathan, Jesse, James, Ira, female Lake, 1813). The first 9 born in New Jersey by 1805 and the last ones born in Westmoreland and then Montour and then Northumberland, Pa. Don't know how much is correct. They had a Jesse Lake born 16 mar 1807 in Derry Twp. Westmoreland, PA according to this source. According to this same source. Richard Lake's parents were John Lake III (1688 ?-1753?)and Martina #1. Maeltlje #2 or #3, Sarah Bayles #3 or #2. John Lake III, parents, John Lake, Jr./ II (1650-1729?)and Neeltje Claesen. At least this info according to records submitted to Ancestry.com and Familysearch.com. Other of Richard Lake and Hannah Lake's children are here listed as : Sarah Lake (26 Feb 1757, New Brun. Mid.Co.) ; John Lake (19 Nov 1759, NB, Mid.Co.) died 17 Mar 1791 ; Nancy Lake 25 Feb 1752, NB, Mid.Co.) ; Benjamin Lake (24 Aug 1764 NB, Mid.Co) died 28 Jun 1838 ; Deborah Lake ( 18 Oct 1767 NB, Mid. Co) died 07 Apr 1836 ; Amy Lake (16 Jul 1770 NB, Mid.Co.) ; James Lake (26 Jul 1773, NB Mid.Co) died 29 Dec 1850. I have a list of Tax Ratables for 1779,1780 for the South Ward (South Brunswick Twp). Richard Lake: 157 acres improved land, 7 horses, 10 horned cattle, 7 pigs, one slave; 9 pounds out at interest. 1780 he had 5 horses and 9 horned cattle. John Lake III while born in Gravesend, died in Middlesex County. The Lake family lived in this area between New Brunswick, NJ and Trenton, NJ probably on either side of Route 27 on current maps. This road known also as the Kings Highway, Dutch Highway and Lincoln Highway. Many early Dutch from Long Island came along this route on settled in and around this area. What is confusing to many researchers is that Route 27 is also the dividing line between Middlesex County and Somerset County and many families living in the area are listed in one or the other of these counties. To make matters more confusing, Hunterdon County at the time of these earlier settlers extended west and south of Somerset County as far south as Trenton, NJ. Much of that area up to the current southern edges of current Somerset and Middlesex Counties was named Mercer County about 1852. Today, we think of Hunterdon County is beiny west and north of Somerset County, which it now is. Also early records list New Brunswick, the county seat as the location of people who lived elsewhere in the Middlesex County. I wish I could tell you more about the Lake family. All I can say is that local history for Kingston, NJ (parts in 3 counties, Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset) quite a feat for a village of several streets today , lists early settlers as Lakes, VanDykes, Gulicks and Bayles, all Dutch families. The other problem is that they were quite prolific and who knows where they all lived or all the various inter-relationships. Name: John Lake Date: 20 Feb 1752 Location: New Brunswick, Middlesex Co.
