Maxwell Surrogate END From: Marfy Goodspeed BEGIN Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 11:30:33 -0500 BEGIN For now, I checked to see if I had anything, and found only Abraham Lake (c.1760-1796 Bethlehem Twp). Given the naming tradition (naming children after their grandparents), there is a chance your gg Grandfather was related. This Abraham ('yeoman of Bethlehem Twp') wrote his will on 13 Mar 1796, leaving to his wife Elizabeth the use of the east room and a third of the profits of land while a widow; and to support daughter Doshe while single; son Richard, daughters Sarah and Anna, each shillings; sons Joseph and John each half of plantation (76 acres each), each to give wife and daughter Doshe (while single) a third of the profits; Daughter Doshe 1 bed, 1 cow and 1/6 of the profits of plantation while single; Executor son Joseph; Witnessed by Richard Leacy Sr, John Kelly and Richard Leacy Jr; Apr 5, Inventory of 149-3-9 by George Kramer, Richard Leacy Sr; will proved 16 April, 1796 [NJA 1758J]. [snip] based on the property owned by Thomas Lake and John Lake. In his will of 1755, Thomas Lake bequeaths to son John (after widow's decease or remarriage) the land where he lives, which he bought from Adam Aller. That land is in Delaware Townhip along Sandbrook-Headquarters Road. I have a great deal of information showing that the John Lake of Amwell (your [4]) lived on that property. He died without a will, but subsequent deeds show that property descending to his children. John Lake 1751 was yeoman of Amwell, named wife Sarah executor with brother in law Daniel Baley (Ballis); named children Hannah, John and Joseph; Nov 2, will proved [NJA 316J]. John Lake 1808 was of Alexandria Twp, died intestate; Apr 29, Inventory $350.49 by James Larason, James Mettler, sworn to by Luther Odpycke, administrator [NJA 2319J]. I had him down as son of the Daniel Lake who died in 1775, but can't prove it. John Lake 1809 was of Amwell, died intestate. Mar 7, Inventory (not totaled) by Peter Prall, tanner, and Jacob Fulper [NJA 2367J]; May 3, sworn to by administrators Cornelius Lake and Henry Trimmer. This is my John Lake, as is shown in a deed dated 1826 Apr 7, "Whereas John Lake Sr deceased was seized of a plantation in Amwell bordered on the north by Philip Rake, on the east by Robert Holcombe deceased and John Hice, on the south by Israel Poulson, on the west by a road that separates it from lands of Samuel Fauss and Isaac Fox and part by Cornelius Hoppock, of 100 acres (D27/21), and having died intestate, his property descended by law to his sons & daughters, the sons getting two shares and the daughters one . . . [Dd 40-454; see 40-455]. I also have no real information on Daniel Lake other than the following-- 1736, Executor of William Job Sr with John Taylor. 1741, Amwell freeholder, on jury list. 1760/61, Appeared in ledger of Thomas Atkinson, merchant of Kingwood [HCHS 761]. LWT: 1775 Sep 25, Daniel Lake of Kingwood, Yeoman, will, eldest son William 100 and my large Bible; son Abraham 100; son John 100; son Thomas 100; son Timothy 100; grandchildren Abner, Mary, Stephen and Ann Runyan 10 when they are of age; granddaughter Mary, daughter of eldest son William a bed; son William the remainder; Executors son William and John Taylor Jr; Witnessed by Jonas Thatcher, James Grahams, Lazarus Adams; Oct 31, Inventory of 707-3-2 by John Sherrerd and Samuel Slater; Nov 8, will proved [NJA]. Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2005 18:01:49 -0500 > John Lake 1808 was of Alexandria Twp, died intestate; Apr 29, Inventory > $350.49 by James Larason, James Mettler, sworn to by Luther Odpycke, > administrator [NJA 2319J]. I had him down as son of the Daniel Lake who > died in 1775, but can't prove it. Here's a thought. Luther Opdycke was administrator of John Lake's estate. Guess who his first wife was--Gertrude Hall, daughter of Theodore and Gerturde Gordon Hall. So she would be the sister of Mary Hall, wife of your Kingwood John Lake. More circumstantial evidence, but I'm not sure of what. >Jay Wright researches this John LAKE. For >a long time I tried to help Jay find the parents of this John LAKE but we >never got anywhere. >What makes you think this John is the son of Daniel LAKE ? Last will & testament of Daniel Lake: 1775 Sep 25, Daniel Lake of Kingwood, Yeoman, will; eldest son William 100 and my large Bible; son Abraham 100; son John 100; son Thomas 100; son Timothy 100; grandchildren Abner, Mary, Stephen and Ann Runyan 10 when they are of age; granddaughter Mary, daughter of eldest son William a bed; son William the remainder; Executors son William and John Taylor Jr; Witnessed by Jonas Thatcher, James Grahams, Lazarus Adams; Oct 31, Inventory of 707-3-2 by John Sherrerd and Samuel Slater; Nov 8, will proved [NJA]. This is basically all the information I have; I believe I put John of Alexandria with Daniel because it seemed to fit. No hard data, unfortunately. END
