From a Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania newspaper in January of 1904: BEGIN Auburn - Terrance Smith, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home in Auburn Township, Sunday, Jan. 3, 1904, from heart disease and dropsy, his age being about 62 years. He is survived by a wife and one brother, John, of Springville, and one sister, Mrs. Thomas Kernan, of Briar Ridge. SAID LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT IS IN THE WORDS FOLLOWING: KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, That I, Thomas Kernan of Auburn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, do make, publish and declare this as for my last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofore made. FIRST: I direct my executor hereinafter named to pay all my just debts and funeral expenses as soon after my decease as may be convenient for him. SECOND: I give, devise and bequeath to my son John Kernan, my farm which I now reside on in Auburn Township, Susquehanna County, Pa., formerly called the James Smith farm; and in addition thereto, all of my bank stock in the First National Bank of Meshoppen, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. THIRD: I give and bequeath to my son Michael Kernan the sum of Twenty five hundred dollars. FOURTH: I give and bequeath to my daughters, Mary Cassedy, Agnes Maxwell and Lucy Kernan, each the sum of Two Thousand dollars. FIFTH: I give, devise and bequeath to my son Thomas Kernan, my farm situate in Meshoppen Township, Wyoming County, Pa., known as the Joseph Baker place, as well as the sum of One Thousand dollars. SIXTH: I give and bequeath to Paul Kernan, Rose Kernan, Gerald Kernan, Rita Kernan and Eleanor Kernan, children of my son John Kernan, each the sum of Fifty dollars. SEVENTH: I give and bequeath to Helen Maxwell, Stanley Maxwell, Catherine Maxwell, Joseph Maxwell and Dorothy Maxwell and Mary Maxwell, children of my daughter Agnes Maxwell, each the sum of Fifty dollars. EIGHTH: I give and bequeath to Francis Kernan, the child of my son Michael Kernan, the sum of Fifty dollars. NINTH: I give and bequeath to Elizabeth Kernan and Doris Kernan, children of my son Thomas Kernan, each the sum of Fifty dollars. TENTH: All of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, real, personal and mixed, I give to my children, John Kernan, Mary Cassedy, Agnes Maxwell, Michael Kernan, Lucy Kernan and Thomas Kernan, to be equally divided amongst them, share and share alike. ELEVENTH: Lastly I nominate, constitute and appoint my son John Kernan to be the sole executor of this my last will and testament.
