from Barbara Ribling BEGIN Date: Tue, 06 May 2003 17:38:24 -0700 BTW, I am doing some research on the BAYLES/BAYLESS families of NJ who later went to MD and VA. I have found surprisingly few references to LAKE family members in East NJ. I did find a record of the birth of Reuben BAYLES, son of Daniel and Johannah (Lake) BAYLES. Unfortunately, Daniel BAYLES is named as the father of Reuben but Johannah is not mentioned: Baptised July 14, 1754, at 1st Presbyterian Church of Cranbury, NJ, was Reuben, son of Daniel BAYLEY (sic). Date: Wed, 07 May 2003 08:11:24 -0700 Cranbury is in Middlesex Co., NJ. It is east of Princeton and Kingston and south of Monmouth Junction on US130. Some of the BAYLES family lived there in the early 1800s and attended the 1st Presbyterian Church. Other BAYLES family members lived in Kingston, Princeton and the surrounding area. I found the Cranbury church records in the on-line subscription "Local & Family Histories" provided to Family Tree Maker/Genealogy.com by ProQuest. That, BTW, is a very nice but slow loading collection of documents/books. The parentage of Sarah BAYLES is in question but she is believed to have been the daughter of either John or Daniel BAYLES as stated in the report below. Note that in John's will his "brother-in-law" Daniel Bayley is named. This is agood argument for Sarah being the dau. of Daniel and not of John Bayles as first stated by Howard Green Bayles. 1. JOHN4 LAKE IV (JOHN3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born Unknown, and died 1751 in Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ. He married SARAH BAYLES, daughter of JOHN BAYLES and RUTH RUSCO. She was born Unknown, and died Aft. 1751. Notes for JOHN LAKE IV: "Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey", First Series, Vol. XXXII, (Calendar of N.J. Wills, Admins., etc, vol. III, 1751-1760), p.189, edited by A. Van Doren Honeyman Will of JOHN LAKE of Amwell, "Hondordon" Co., dtd 24 Sep 1751, proved 2 Nov 1751. Wife SARAH. Children: HANNAH, JOHN, JOSEP. Real & personal estate. Executors: "the wife & brother-in-law DANIEL BAYLEY (BAILIS)". Witnesses: "JACOB HORTAIN (HORTON), MARY HORTAIN, JONATHAN STOUT. Inventory dtd 25 Oct 1751: L153.15.3 1/2, of which L96.11.6 consist of value of 60 acres of land, a stack of wheat and two of rye made by JONATHAN STOUT & WILLIAM ALLEN; the executor signing as DANIEL BAYLIS Jr. Notes for SARAH BAYLES: According to Howard Green Bayles, 1946, Sarah was more likely the daughter of Daniel Bayles (16) rather than John Bayles (2). Children of JOHN LAKE and SARAH BAYLES are: i. HANNAH5 LAKE, b. Unknown. ii. JOHN LAKE, b. Unknown. iii. JOSEPH LAKE, b. Unknown. --------------------------------------------------------- Johannah LAKE, as you are aware, was the daughter of John Lake and wife Martinah. Johannah married Daniel Bayles, son of Daniel Bayles and Sarah of Kingston, NJ. Reuben BAYLES is the son of Johannah LAKE and Daniel BAYLES who was baptised in Cranbury. Until I found the Cranbury church records, the baptism date was given as Reuben's birth date. Johannah and Daniel are believed to have been married in Middlesex Co., NJ, but I have found no record for the marriage. As Reuben BAYLES was batized in Cranbury, it is probably safe to believe that Johannah lived there and also attended the Cranbury 1st Presbyterian Church though I have not found her name in the records. Daniel BAYLES and Sarah, his first wife, are believed to have been the parents of Sarah who married John LAKE. This would make Sarah (Bayles) LAKE the sister-in-law of Johannah (Lake) BAYLES and sister of Daniel BAYLES and thus her husband's will names his BIL, Daniel "BAYLEY". Johannah (Lake) BAYLES went to MD and to Loudon Co., VA, with her husband Daniel. There is no record of her in East TN but she is believed to have died in Washington Co., TN, and may be buried in an unmarked grave at Cherokee Baptist Church in that county. Her husband Daniel is buried in that cemetery and his marker was still readable as late as the 1940s. I have not seen the grave and do not know if the grave marker is still there or if it can be read. Some descendants believe that Johannah either remained in Loudon Co., VA, or returned there after a brief stay in East TN. No proof one way or the other. Below is a descendant report. There were nine children, all of whom were evidently born in New Jersey with the possible exception of Hezekiah. Daniel Bayless moved from New Jersey to Cecil County, Maryland sometime between 1757-62. By 1771 he had moved to Loudon County, Virginia. It is said that each time he moved he would leave power-of-attorney with a friend until he could establish another residence. His occupation is given as surveyor but, like most people of that era, he probably was proficient in many trades. In 1780-81 he, along with other settlers, started the long trek to Washington County, Tennessee, then North Carolina. This territory became part of Tennessee in 1796. Deed records at Jonesboro, Tennessee reveal that Daniel and three of his sons, Samuel, Reuban, and Hezekiah, were granted lands in Washington County as early as 1784. Daniel Bayless was pastor of the Cherokee Baptist Church which was organized in 1783 and was the first Baptist Church in the Tennessee Territory. It is not sure when his pastorate began but he served until his death in 1800. His son, John, succeeded him as pastor and served until his death in 1823. It is assumed that all of these earlier members of the Bayless family are buried in the Cemetery of the Cherokee Baptist Church (five miles south of Jonesboro), although the inscriptions on the earlier markers are illegible and no census is available. There are dozens of Bayless markers that can be read and this cemetery is an interesting place to visit.
