Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2016 15:03:40 -0800 From: "'Annette Truesdell' BEGIN Just a bit of history about my own search - my grandmother Flossie Lake, was a daughter of Frank Lake, a miner and police officer from St. Lawrence Co. NY who left NY with his brothers to make their fortunes in the western gold and silver mines.  I grew up spending my summers with my grandmother, hearing the oral history of her family in NY whom she had never met, yet felt so connected to.  She sent what information she had, and encouraged her cousins in NY by mail, to answer Claud McMillan’s request for their LAKE family history for his book, “A History of My People and Yours”. As most of you probably know, Rev. McMillan did not verify any data he received from contributors to that effort, thus documenting and perpetuating errors in many LAKE lines. (This in addition to his manuscript being dropped on the floor of the publisher and put back together in the wrong order, adding more confusion to the data.)  We should be extremely grateful however, for the research he did do into the land, probate and military records available to him at the time, that opened the door into our understanding of where our LAKE ancestors came from and some of the issues that brought about our our Loyalist heritage.  My problem was that in his book, he had my oldest “known” LAKE ancestor, James W. Lake, cited as the son of James’ cousin, Henry who was only 13 years older than James.  Thus began my search. I decided that the only way to untangle fact from fiction was to embark upon a one-name LAKE study and put any and all LAKEs in their proper place, based on data from source records.  I received a lot of help from Janna Larson who published the Lake/Leake Newsletter back in the 1970’s/80s; the many, many contributors to that newsletter; connected with Marshall, Alice Beard, Jim Lake; sit-down work sessions with Milt Lake, Janet Jeffery, Karen Arave, Kathrine Andresson; spent a small fortune on researchers, travel, mail and phone bills pre-internet.  In short, I’ve been at this for 40+ years and have been the grateful recipient of countless hours of research from many good people.  My LAKE line was solved thru the process of elimination and verified by the discovery of a bible record housed in a collection at the Detroit Public Library. My line: John Lake/Ann Spicer John Lake/Neltje Claessen Nicholas Lake/Mary Johnson Thomas Lake/Michal Williamson  (brother to your John Lake who married Margaret Snider) John Lake/Sarah Mathews James W. Truesdell END Sherwood Lake, 6 Sep 2008 ... BEGIN Thomas Lake b. 1734 New Jersey d. 1813 Wolford Grenville Ontario Canada Thomas Lake, my 5X Great Grandfather. He was born in Middlesex NJ son of Nicholas Lake and Mary Janzen. He married Mayke or Michal Williamson 16 Aug 1757 and started his family among the children born to them while they live in NJ was my 4thX Great Grandfather James or as the dutch called him "Kobus" Lake. By 1761 Thomas and his family along with at-least 2 brothers had relocated to White Creek New York, in what is now Washington County. They began farming a plot of land, a small farm of about 5000 acres on what was known as the Arent Van Corlear grant, he and the Lake families split this land grant to create these farms. When the American Revolutionary War began most of the Lake family were loyalist and took up the cause of King and Country. Thomas participated in the Battle of Bennington which was primarily fought on his farm land, he joined a unit known as the Queens Loyal Rangers under the command of a former Green Mountain boy by the name of Peters who had received a commission as a LT Colonel in the British Army and was order to form a Loyalist fighting unit. This unit, a small force of British regulars, along with a group of German Soldiers known as Brunswickers was detailed to capture the Colonial Militia supplies stored at Bennington in what is now Vermont. About 5 miles from Bennington the British Force engaged what they thought was going to be a small Colonial Militia Unit, not understanding what was happening they ran into a very large force that had been mustered to prevent there taking Bennington. The result of this battle was the British, German and Loyalist force was stopped and forced to surrender, the German Commander was killed and many casualties were sustained. Thomas Lake survived the Battle and was taken prisoner, he and the rest of his comrades were held at Cambridge NY until after the Battle of Saratoga NY they were ultimately released. The loyalists were forced to leave the colonies many fled to Canada some the West Indies, everything they owned had been confiscated so they had to start again. Thomas took his family to Wolford, Grenville Co., Ontario where he remained until his death in 1813 at the age of 70 years old. His son James was the first to return to the US when he refused to sign a loyalty oath in Canada around 1814. James lost his property in Canada and was also forced to start from scratch. James settled with his son Jesse Lake in Gouverneur St. Lawrence NY and is buried in Wayside Cemetery with several members of the family. Much of the solid information about Thomas still must be proven and sourced there has been some research but there are credibility issues with it. So more work is necessary to complete the picture but I am finding solid information on a regular basis. END Sherwood Lake, 12 Dec 2012 BEGIN ... Thomas Lake was a farmer in New York State at the time of the Battle of Bennington, his farm was located in the area of the Battlefield. There are records that indicate he was captured and interred in Cambridge New York until after the Battle of Saratoga was won. He was released, like many other loyalist prisoner after the battle and at present It is not clear what Thomas did or where he went until he and his family are found in Canadian Census after the war. It is possible he returned to farming or may have gone to join another fighting unit. It would not be surprising that once the battle was over and the fighting moved else-where that he and his brothers just went back to his farm. With the defeat of the only major British Army in Northeastern New York there would have been nothing to prevent the Lake brothers from returning to the farm or possibly setting out for Canada; Research is actively continuing in this area. ... END Notes from Annette Truesdell's GEDCOM FILE. BEGIN 1. Thomas1 Lake(1) (#4) was born in prob Middlesex, New Jersey about 1734. Thomas died about 1813 in Wolford Twp, Grenville, Ontario, Canada. He married Michal or Mayke Williamson in prob, Middlesex, New Jersey, about 1757. (Michal or Mayke Williamson is #5.) Michal was born in of Somerset, New Jersey about 1737. (Additional notes for Michal or Mayke Williamson(2)) Michal died after 1819 in Grenville, Ontario, Canada. Michal became the mother of Garret Lake in prob Somerset, New Jersey, about 1759. At 28 years of age Michal became the mother of James or Kobus Lake in Somerset, New Jersey, 9 AUG 1765. Michal became the mother of Catherine Lake in prob New York, about 1767. Michal became the mother of Sarah Lake in New York, about 1768. Michal became the mother of Jane Lake in prob New York, about 1770. At 35 years of age Michal became the mother of John Lake in prob New York, 20 AUG 1772. BIRTH: Year of 1737 derived from 1802-1819 Wolford, Grenville, Ontario census. NAME: Named as "Michal" in most census records and her husband's will. Also named as "Mychelle" or "Michael". Listed in DRC records as "Maike" and "Mayke". MARRIAGE: Married to Thomas Lake about 1756/7 per baptismal records of her children. DEATH: About 1819/20. She is last named in the 1819 census in the household of her son Abra ham. NOTE: Claud McMillan says she is the sister to the Garret Williamson who applied for some of the land grants in Albany Co., NY. Although possible, there is no evidence thus far that h as been found to support this. He also states that she is the daughter of "William Williamson". There is an abstract of a will of a William Williamson of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ. date d 24 Jun 1764, proved 16 Jun 1774 that reads "wife, Patience...my daughters, Margret Larrew and Mayke Williamson...sons, Cornelius, Samuel, William, John and Abram...Executors - Cornelius and Samuel.. .Witnesses- Peter Rettinghouse, Garret Lake, John Bolby." Since Michal had be en married at least seven years and had 5 children by the time this will was written, it doesn't seem logical that she would be referred to by her maiden name "Mayke Williamson" when he r sister was referred to by her married name of "Margret Larrew". For this reason I don't th ink this is enough evidence to claim this William Williamson as Michal's father. (Garret Lake who witnessed Wm. Williamson's will was most probably the son of Thomas Lake and wife Jane of Hunterdon Co.) 21 Aug 1797 - Petition of Michal Lake. "petitioner is the wife of Thomas Lake, a Loyal subject who joined the Royal Standard in the year 1777, your petitioner being the daughter of an undoubted Loyalist and having received no lands humbly pray ...may be granted to her a location of 200 acres on the river Raddo (Rideau) in the township of Wolford on Lot 7 in the 3rd Con cession." (L Bundle Misc, 1797-1834 RG 1, L 3, vol 306 a). NOTE: although no primary evidence has yet been found, it is likely, though not proven, that Michal was the daughter of a Garret Williamson (and his wife, Marya) who was likely a son o f Jacobus Williamson, a son of William Williamson and Mayke Pieterse Wycoff. The descendant line of Jacobus Williamson is incomplete and there is not much in the land, probate or church records in NJ to give other evidence. What is known is that there was a Garret Williamson who went to NY at the time when the LAKE family settled their land grants there. From a process of elimination of what is known about the other related Williamson families in NJ, it seems likely that Garret was the son of Jacobus. Garret was born about 1715 and was a pew holder at the Harlingen DRC, Montgomery Twp, Somerset Co. There are no dates to this church record, but Garrett was a contemporary of Johan Stryker, Corneles Weykof, Marteines Vorhus, and Hendk Snyder who were also pew holders. Garret is also listed as a "Freeholder in Wester n Precinct of Somerset County, 1753", "Gen Mag of NJ, vol 18" along with men listed above a s pew holders. Garret is probably also the father of the Jacobus Williamson (married Mary Barber) who also went to NY and was a settler on the patents. From the "Minutes of the Albany Committee of Correspondence", Vol 1. Jacobus Williamson is named as member of Albany Committee Chamber, 1 Mar 1776, along with Henry Leake and John Abbot, participants in Schneider Patent. Also "Committee of Hosick District" elected five Members to represent said District : Isaac Lansingh, Adam Vrooman, Jacobus Williamson, Henry Leake and John Abbot. Although there is no primary evidence to prove it, it is more likely than not that this Jacobus Williams on and Michal Williamson are the older children of Garret Williamson and his wife, Marya. Ne ed further research to find supporting evidence. Last edited on 19 Mar 2005 in source program. Thomas became the father of Garret Lake in prob Somerset, New Jersey, about 1759. At 31 years of age Thomas became the father of James or Kobus Lake in Somerset, New Jersey, 9 AUG 1765. Thomas became the father of Catherine Lake in prob New York, about 1767. Thomas became the father of Sarah Lake in New York, about 1768. Thomas became the father of Jane Lake in prob New York, about 1770. At 38 years of age Thomas became the father of John Lake in prob New York, 20 AUG 1772. BIRTH: Abt 1734. The 1802 Wolford, Grenville Co., Ontario census lists his age as 66, which would be the year 1736. The 1804 and 1805 Wolford census lists his age as 70 and 71 which would be the year 1734. MARRIAGE: Abt 1757, Michal Williamson, date unknown at this time. A marriage date of 16 Au g 1767 with reference to Schaghticoke DRC which is reported in Claud McMillan's "Hist of My People and Yours", pg 508-513 is incorrect. A marriage date of 1756/7 is more likely due to t heir first child's baptismal record of 16 Jul 1758 for "Nicklass Leek to Tomas Leek and Mayke " found in the Six-Mile DRC in Somerset Co., NJ. DEATH: Will dated 30 Sep 1814, Grenville Co., "being sick and weak, but perfect mind and memory" bequeaths to "Michal my dearly beloved wife, all my moveable property during her natural life". Also "to each of my children now living an equal part of my real and personal estate at the decease of myself and my wife except fifty acres of land drawn by my wife as famil y land which I bequeath to my son Nicholas, more than his proportion and one cow now in the p ossession of Henrietta Hardy which I bequeath to her more than her share." William Robinson and Gerritt Lake were appointed executors. Will was signed by Wm. Merick, Elisha Coller and Abraham Lake. (Note: it is not clear what relationship Elisha Coller had to the Lake family . Elisha Collar, Sr., and Elisha Collar, Jr. are found in the 1790 Albany NY census in Cambridge. They were probably neighbors of the Lake family in NY and Elisha Jr. apparently migrated to Canada, living for a time with the Lake family. He is found in their household in th e 1804 and 1805 census and in household next to Abraham Lake in 1823 census.) The author refers to a list of Middlesex Co. Freeholders from the years 1748 and 1750 . The date of 1750 comes from a letter the author received from the NJ State Archives. Th e letter states that the 1750 date is approximate. The list is not alphabetical but rather appears to be by residence. Named together in both lists are John Lake, Henry Lake and Thoma s Lake. Then down the list about 20 people or so is a Nicholas Lake. The 1763 date is proba bly more accurate. 6 May 1764 - dau Elisabet bp DRC Harlingen, Somerset Co. 15 Sep 1765 - son "Kobus" bp DRC Harlingen, Somerset Co. to "Tommis Leck and Mayke". Some IGI records identify this child as a male. I am assuming this child to be a female, named after her mother Michal Williamson. The spelling of "Michal" is repeated several times in the Ontario military census records for Michal Williamson Lake, and Thomas refer s to his wife "Michal" in his will. Other spellings of "Mychelle" also are found and this i s probably the pronounciation of her name. 27 December 1779. NOTE: There is a petition dated 3 Aug 1846 from Amos Lake, asking that he be granted the right to purchase the north half of Lot 14 in the 8th Conc in the township of Mariposa that ha d been previously granted to a Patrick McGans. His petition states that he "is the son o f a UE Loyalist who has been a resident settler of the Township of Mariposa for eight years with his family of which there are six boys alive and four grown to manhood." Petition approved 4 Dec 1846. NOTE: From notes on the 1810 Ontario and Steuben census: Ontario County towns of Benton, Jerusalem, Middlesex and Naples; and in the Steuben County towns of Reading and Wayne. Thus all the area of modern Yates County is covered, plus parts of parent towns now in other counties. By the year 1810 the settlement of the county was more than 20 years old, and several o f the towns had enough population to have been formally organized. Jerusalem had its modern boundaries except for the Bluff Point peninsula, still part of the Steuben County town of Wayne. Benton was organized in 1803 as the town of Vernon; the name had already been used the previous year in Oneida County and in 1808 it was changed to Snell by the state legislature, after a state senator from Montgomery County. The local people found this an unsuitable solution to the problem, and soon afterward met at Luman Phelps' inn in Penn Yan to make up a petition asking that the name be changed to Benton, after Levi Benton, one of the county's early settlers and the first in township 8 in the first range. The legislature accepted the change i n April 1810, just in time for the census to bear the new name. Michal Lake(10) (#12). She was christened in Schaghticoke DRC, Albany, New York, 16 AUG 1778. BIRTH: Schaghticoke Dutch Reformed Church, Rensselaer, NY. LDS Ordinance work per IGI don e in 1946 as female and 1978 as male. This child was most probably a female and named after her mother. NOTE: I previously thought that Michal Lake was the same person as found in the Land Board Record 1792-94 petition for "Elisabeth Lake Haskin, being a daughter of Thomas Lake, UEL." N o residence listed on petition but grant was given for Lot 16, Con 9, Kitley Twp, OC 14 Feb 1 798. Reasons for that assumption were as follows: In the 1804 Wolford, Grenville Co., milit ary census, "Hannah Haskins", age 26 is listed with husband, Nicholas Haskins. From "Kitley , 1795-1975" by Glenn J. Lockwood, he cites a report of persons settled in the Township in 17 98: "Elizabeth Haskins, Lot 16 Conc 9, UELs in the settlement waiting the confirmation; Nicholas Haskins, Lot 30 conc 8, On lot with his family..." As this does not say that Elizabeth i s "on the lot" rather "waiting the confirmation" it appeared that "Elizabeth Haskins" was th e same person as Nicholas Haskins' wife Hannah. From census reports for the area from 1797-1 813, Nicholas is the son of Joseph Haskins, Sr and his wife Elizabeth. In 1802, this Joseph' s wife Elizabeth is 61 years old. That would eliminate the older Elizabeth as the "daughter o f Thomas Lake, UEL". 1805 Wolford census index lists Joseph, age 59; Elizabeth, age 62; Josep h Jr., age 19; Nicholas, age 27; Hannah, age 27; Anne, age 4; Anson, age 1. "Hist of Leeds & Grenville" by Leavitt indicates that Nicholas Haskins was killed in an accident during a mill raising. This must have occured during 1805 because in 1806, Joseph is listed as age 60; Elizabeth, age 64; Joseph Jr. , age 21; Hannah, age 28, widow; Annie, age 4; Anson, ag e 2. Hannah and her children are not listed with the Haskins in 1807 and from an account o n page 88 of Leavitt's "Hist", it is assumed that Hannah married again by 1808 to Asa Blancha rd: "In the winter of 1808-9, the following moved to the Township... Asa Blanchard, Hannah Bl anchard, Annis Haskins, Anson Haskins..." Although Thomas and Michal Lake had a daughter "Eli sabet, bp 1764", this daughter would have been 40 years old in 1804, not 26. However, their daughter Michal, bp 1778 would have been 26 years old, the same age as Hannah Haskins in 18 04. This is what was confusing. One explanation seemed that perhaps Elisabet, bp 1764 ma y have died prior to 1779 and they called Michal, "Elisabeth" in her stead. Or, Elisabeth could have been a middle name given to more than one child. Michal might have gone by "Hannah " while in Wolford so as not to be confused with Joseph's wife Elizabeth, or it just may hav e been a nickname she was called. There did not appear to be anyone else in Kitley that could be identified as "Elizabeth Lake Haskins" and Hannah Haskin's age does match that of Michal Lake. These assumptions have now all been found to be incorrect. As of Nov 1999, new data has been found from records in a book "Smith Family History and Genealogy of the Descendants of Elijah Smith" written in 1917 by Mrs. Louisa A Dewey with the 2n d edition updated and expanded by Leolah Brown and F. Haskin Smith in 1951. The info on th e Haskin/Lake connections is from the 1917 edition. This data sent by Chris Wade, email, gardener_plus@yahoo.com. This data identifies Elizabeth Lake Haskins husband as a different Nicholas Haskins. Apparently there were two Nicholas Haskins: one the son of Joseph Haskins, S r and husband of Hannah, and the second one a son of Nicholas/Abial Haskins, Sr and Judah Carey and the husband of Elizabeth Lake. (The possibility exists that Nicholas Haskins, Sr. and Joseph Haskins, Sr. may be brothers.) Prior to Nov 1999, this database cited the name for Michal Lake as "Michal or Elizabeth or Hannah Lake". This has now been changed to read only 'Michal Lake". A marriage to Nicholas Ha skins and children, Annis and Anson have also been deleted. No other records or information about Michal Lake have been found to date. Last edited on 22 Nov 2005 in source program. 6 v. Henderica or Henrietta Lake(11) (#13). MARR: 1st) There is a marriage record in the Schagticoke DRC records "31 Oct 1779 David Luc as and Elizabeth Lake". Assuming her to be the same. No other Elizabeth Lake has been ident ified as yet but still searching for clarification. NOTE: could be the same as named as a witness for the marriage Phillip Allen and Rebecca Woo d 20 Oct 1779 at the Quaker meetinghouse in White Creek. NOTE: Land Board Records 1792-94 record a petition for Elisabeth Lake Haskin, being a daughter of Thomas Lake, UEL. No residence listed on petition but grant was for Lot 16, Con 9, Kitley Twp, OC 14 Feb 1798. The Elizabeth Lake Haskins on this lot was married to Nicholas Haskins. Evidence from Wolford census indicated that the wife of Nicholas Lake (named Hannah i n census) had the same birth date as Michal Lake. The only explanation that made sense at th e time was perhaps Elizabeth Lake died sometime shortly after the birth of Michal (1778) an d Michal was called Elizabeth in her memory or stead. New evidence has been found, however , that refutes this assumption and indicates there were two Nicholas Haskins living in the sa me area: one married to Elizabeth Lake and the other married to Hannah _______ (See notes fo r Michal Lake). In the 1813 Montague census his age is listed between 50-60 yrs old. Given the baptismal dates of the other children in the family, Garret's birth would have to be 1759 or 1760. DEATH: Will dated 17 Jan 1816. He is not listed in the 1817 census. LDS FILM #1312274, Leeds/Grenville Probate records: "The Last will and testament of Garret Lake of the Township of Montague, district of Johnstown and Province of Upper Canada. I give a nd bequeath all my property real and personal of whatever sort it may consist of whether land , cattle, money, notes or bank accounts or empliments to be equally devided between my wife Rosannah Lake, my sons Garret and Nicholas Lake, my daughters Sarah Lake and M__h_l (prob Michal) McCrea, wife of Thomas McCrea all of the aforesaid township of Montague. Dated 17 Jan 1816, wit by Stephen Burritt and Abraham Lake. MARRIAGE: 1st) Harligen DRC records a baptism 16 Sep 1787 of "Annathe" to "Garret Lake" an d his wife "Gerthe". The age of Garret's children named in his will and the Montague census records imply that Garret was married previously. Assume "Annathe" to be mother of his older children. MARR: 2nd) Mrs. Rosanna Kelly, c1812. Assumed to be widow of Lt. Martin Kelly who served i n the Grenville Militia in 1803 along with Abraham Lake. NOTE: It is possible that Garret was married previous to either of these. He was born in c1 759. It is probable that he could have married and had children as early as 1780. Also, i f Garret is indeed the same as found in the 1810 Genesee Co., NY census, then he married a wife in 1809 who died before he returned to Wolford by 1812. CHILDREN: Michal, b. c1791; Garret, b. 1794; Sarah, b. 1815; Nicholas, b. 1816. HISTORY: CENSUS: 1790 Albany Co., NY. Assumed to be the "Gerrit T. Lake" found in Hoosick Town census next to "Henry T. Lake", who is most probably his brother. Gerrit T. Lake 1 male +16. 1 male under 16 (could be a first son who died before will written or was already provided for). 1 female (wife). 1800 OTSEGO NY CENSUS. Assuming "Garret Lake" of Otsego Co. to be this Garret. There is stronger evidence for this assumption. Garret's older brother, Henry, had moved his family from Hoosick to Otsego Co . by 1797. In a land transaction in 1797 in Richfield, Otsego Co., Henry has purchased a tract of land and "Garret Lake" is one of the witnesses. On the same enumeration page 48 of th e Otsego census appears Henry, Garret, John and James Lake. It would seem that the brother s Garret, John and James were residing near Henry before removing to Canada between 1802-1809 . CENSUS: 1800 Otsego Co., NY, gp 48: Garret Lake. 1 male 0-10 (prob Garret Jr.). 1 male 10-15 (could be an older son prev found in 1790 census). 1 male 26-45 (Garret). 1 female 26-45 (wife). Another book, "Genealogy and Family History o f Jefferson County New York" pg 1195, says she was a native of Ontario County, New York an d a distant relative of Andrew Jackson. It says the family is of "Irish descent". I believe these two accounts to be more accurate at this time than that of McMillan and my family group sheets reflect this information. 8/94 AFT. MARR: Hannah Jackson. "Gen & Fam Hist of No. NY" by Wm. R. Cutter records a marriage date o f 9 Sept 1790. "Jeff Co. Gen & Fam Hist", v. 2 also records this date. DEATH: Cemetery records of the Wayside Cemetery, Richville, NY read "6 March 1842, 74 years. " "Gen and Fam Hist of No. NY" says he died "7 Mar 1841, being over 80 years old." A death date of 1842 is supported by James being named as his son, Abraham's heir and tenant in a sheriff's sale of Abraham's land in Gouverneur which was seized and auctioned 27 Mar 1841. James was most likely born in 1765 per christening records and died in 1842 at the age of 77, not 74. Probable error in reading of headstone. Hist" Vol 2.: "James Lake was born probably in Otsego Co. when he moved to Canada and settled on the banks of the Reto river (Rideau), where he owned a farm of 500 acres. (Note - this statement also gives weight to the assumption that Jam es and his brothers were enumerated in Otsego Co during the 1800 census.) During War of 1812 , he was required to take the oath of allegiance to the British govt and on his refusal to d o so his land was confiscated. He was then obliged to leave Merrick Falls, which was the name of the town he had settled and return to the United States. He went to St. Lawrence count y and settled on a farm of 150 acres where he passed the remainder of his life. He married Sept. 9, 1790, Hannah Jackson, a native of Ontario county. The children were Thomas, Jesse, Abraham, Catherine, John and Henry. (Note: son named James Stuart or Stuart is not mentioned i n this account.) Mr. Lake died on his farm in St. Lawrence county March 7, 1841 being then mo re than eighty years of age". NOTE: GENEALOGY AND FAM HIST OF NO. NY, V.3, W.R. Cutter: has similar account but says that James is the son of "Garrett Lake", not Thomas Lake. This record documents the family of Porter Lake and his father Levi Lake (gr-grandson and grandson of James) who were apparently s till living at the time of book's publication. Dates of births, marriages and deaths correspond with Jefferson Co. History. From census records and land petitions, it is clear that Tho mas was James' father. (Additional notes for Elisha Baker(28)) NAME: Ontario Land Board Records 1792-1794 lists receiving a petition from "Catherine Lake Baker, daughter of Thomas Lake UEL". Assuming him to be the Elisha Baker who signed the affidavit in 1803 for Thomas Lake when Thomas was trying to get his name put back on the UEL lists. Last edited on 24 Sep 2000 in source program. BIRTH: Ontario Land Board Records 1792-1794 lists receiving a petition from "Catherine Lake Baker, daughter of Thomas Lake UEL". Her date of birth of c1767 and her position in the family is based on the 1792-4 date of the land records and known birth dates of siblings. NOTE: 11/03. It was previously thought that Catherine had two OCs for land. Further research into the contents of these OCs indicate that they were not for Catherine Lake Baker. Th e first OC is 16 Apr 1818, free grant, daughter of a UEL, residence Williamsburgh, grant lo t 7, Conc 5 WRC, Caledon. (Caledon is NNE of Toronto and just N of Brampton.) This OC for Catherine Baker states she was the daughter of William Franks and wife of Michael Baker who was the son of Conrad Baker. The second one X“ OC 6 Nov 1834, free grant, lists residence of Osnabruck, (E of Grenville, close to Cornwall) no grant given, daughter of a UEL and states th at Catherine Baker was the daughter of Jacob ? (unable to read) and wife of Adam Baker. As o f this time, there are no other records of grants for Catherine Lake Baker. MARR: Possibly Elisha Baker who signed the affidavit in 1803 for Thomas Lake when Thomas was trying to get his name put back on the UEL lists. There is a land petition for Elisha Bake r dated 18 Nov 1797 that was a free grant and was held as his family was not in the province at the time of the petition. (William Robinson is #15.) William was born in of Wolford, Grenville, Ontario, Canada about 1766. (Additional notes for William Robinson(30)) Birth: 1805 Wolford census lists age as 39; listed as "William Robertson". Last edited on 24 Sep 2000 in source program. BIRTH: 1805 Wolford census lists age as 37 yrs, which would be a birth year of about 1768 . Sarah is listed with her family in the 1805 census under the name of "Sarah Robertson". Census listings for subsequent years for "Sarah Robinson" confirm that this is the same person and family. MARR: William Robinson. Her husband would probably have been the same William Robinson referred to by Leavitt in "Hist of Leeds and Grenville", pg 179, "In 1819...there were but four white families in North Crosby, viz., William Robinson, Issac McCardney, _________ Moore and M r. Hastings." William was named as an executor of Thomas Lake's will. In 1823, the Probate Index lists a memo to Abraham Lake regarding Thomas' estate which would imply that William had died by 1823. William and Sarah were probably in Otsego Co., NY in 1797 when a "William Robinson" witnesses a land transaction of her brother Henry Lake. 3 Dec 1803 - Petition of Sarah Robinson "daughter of Thomas and Michel Lake". 28 Jan 1804 - recommended for 200 acres. 1805 WOLFORD census: (note - family listed as "Robertson".) William Robertson, 39; Garret Robertson, 13; James Robertson, 11; William Robertson, Jr., 10; John Robertson, 4; Thomas Robert son, 2; Sarah Robertson, 37; Mary Robertson, 15; Rebekkah Robertson, 7; Elisha Chollar, 20. 1807 MONTAGUE census: William Robinson, Sarah, Mary, Gerrit, James, William, Rebekah, John, Thomas, Jane. 1808 INHABITANTS OF MONTAGUE TOWNSHIP: William Robinson, 41 Garret, 16 James, 13 William, 11 John, 7 Thomas, 5 Sarah, 39 Mary, 18 Rebecca, 9 Jenny, 2 Robert, no age, probably under 1 year. 1813 WOLFORD census: William Robinson, household includes: 1 adult male (William); 4 male children (prob William , John, Thomas and Robert); 1 adult female (Sarah); 2 female children (prob Jane and Rebekah) . James Robinson, Wolford, 1813, 1 adult male. No other listing for this family until a listing in 1844 in Augusta for William Robinson, 1 m ale over 16, 1 female over 16. She married James Wiltse about 1787. (James Wiltse is #11.) James was born in Hopewell, Dutchess, NY 10 MAR 1764. (Additional notes for James Wiltse(32)) James died 1827 in Wiltsetown, Leeds, Ontario, Canada, at 63 years of age. Birth/death: "Hist of Leeds and Grenville", by T. Leavitt, pub. 1879, pg. 81. Death per grou p sheet of Bette Millaway. Last edited on 2 Jan 2001 in source program. BIRTH: Birth date of c1770 is assumed from the birth date of 1793 of third son, Leonard Wiltse. Assuming the birth dates of children, Mary and Cornelius were c1789 and c1791 and her marriage date was c1788 or earlier, Jane would have probably been born about 1770. Since we kn ow that her sister Maragrita (Margaret) was born in 1773/4 and John was born in 1772, a probable birth date of c1770 is likely. MARR: James Wiltse. James was the son of Jeremiah Wiltse. Per Leavitt's "Hist of Leeds & Grenville, pg 81, "It is supposed that the Wiltse family is of Dutch origin, emigrating from Holland about the year 1624, and arriving in America with the Puritans." CHILDREN: Henry, Leonard, Cornelius, Mary, Truman, Srah, Samuel, William, Pamelia, Elizabeth , Mercy, Nancy. Birth dates are estimated from census information and dates from the children's OC's. 8 Jan 1793 - Petition of "Jane Wiltse, daughter of Thomas Lake, (late soldier in Major Jessups Corps and wife of James Wiltse of Augusta". 1802 YONGE, LEEDS CO., ONTARIO census. "Obadia h Matthias" of Hartford, Washington Co., NY names the "children of my daughter Sarah Lake" a s heirs in his will dated 16 Mar 1825. Proximity of Hartford to Cambridge, NY and the name o f John and Sarah's oldest son being "Obediah" are reasonable evidence that Obadiah Matthews i s the father of Sarah Matthews Lake. Since Sarah died in 1818, her children would be entitle d to her portion of the estate. The name of John and Sarah's oldest child, "Michal", being t he name of Thomas Lake's wife also supports the premise that this John Lake is the son of Tho mas Lake and Michal Williamson. MARR: 2) Probably Ann or "Nancy"_________ of a Nottawasaga land petition. DEATH: Bible records John's death as 14 Jul 1837. On 25 Sep 1837, Petition of "Nancy Lake " for land as "widow of John Lake deceased." This petition is for land in Nottawasaga, Simco e Co., Ontario that had been improved by John Lake. Although he went by Eric Lake, his given name was Erie J. Lake. John Smith Lake was the son of John Jackson Lake and Polly Ann Beebe. John Jackson Lake was the son of James Lake and Hannah Jackson. James Lake (baptized "Kobus" in Somerset Co., NJ) was the son of Thomas Lake and Michal Williamson. Thomas Lake, along with 3 of his brothers, had a land grant in White Creek/Cambridge, NY. The land was on the NY/VT border and was part of a messy land dispute. Thomas and his brothers were Loyalists and fled to Canada after the Revolution. Thomas settled and died in Wolford, Ontario. His son, James and family left Canada after the War of 1812 for St. Lawrence Co., NY, along with James' brother, John. I descend from John. END email exchange ... Does anyone have any further > information on these LAKEs? From research I have done on my line of LAKEs, it appears that they are sons of Thomas Lake and Michal/Mayke Williamson who lived in Cambridge, Washington Co., NY prior to the Rev. War. By 1784, Thomas, who was a Loyalist, had to leave NY for Canada. In brief: Henry was bp at the Harlingen DRC on 2 May 1762. He removed from NJ with his parents to NY sometime about 1765. His father, Thomas, was a participant in the Lake/Van Corlaer Patent. Henry served in the War on the side of the Colonists in his father's stead, as well as that of their neighbor, Mathew Brighton, according to his pension papers. (Thomas was under house arrest in Cambridge.) Henry married Jemima Waldo, dau of John Waldo and Jemima Abbott. They lived first in Hoosic, Rensselaer Co., NY and then removed with his family to Plainfield (formerly Richfield), Otsego Co., NY by 1797. There is a land record of Henry's dated 1797 that is witnessed by Wm. Robinson and Garret Lake. It is assumed that Wm. Robinson is the husband of Henry's sister, Sarah. Garret Lake is assumed to be his brother. Henry remains in Otsego Co., until he later removes to Ames, Montgomery Co., NY. He dies there in 1851. There is no baptismal record thus far for Garret but from the 1813 Montague, Ontario census his age is listed between 50-60 yrs old. Given the baptismal dates of the other children of Thomas and Michal, Garret's birth would have to be 1759 or 1760. In the 1790 Albany Co., NY census, he is assumed to be the Gerrit T. Lake found in Hoosick Town census next to Henry T. Lake, who is most probably his brother. Proof of his relationship to Thomas Lake is from his land petitions as a son of a UEL. John was born 20 Aug 1772 per a bible record. He married Sarah Matthews, dau of Obadiah Matthews of Harford, Washington Co., NY. Proof of his relationship is from his land petitions as a son of a UEL. James, another brother is also found in the 1800 Otsego census residing next to Henry, Garret and John. He was baptized at the Harlingen DRC on 15 Sep 1765. He married Hannah Jackson. Proof of his relationship is from his land petitions as a son of a UEL. It is not known exactly when the brothers leave Washington and Rensselaer counties (probably between 1792-97) but it appears that they (along with their brother-in-law Wm Robinson) resided near Henry before removing to Canada between 1802-1809. They all petition for land there as children of a UEL at various times during that period. Garret remains in Montague, Lanark, Ontario and dies there about 1816. James would not sign the loyalty oath after the 1812 conflict and he and his brother John leave Canada for NY about 1814 and remove to Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties. James dies 6 Mar 1842 in Gouverneur, NY. John returns to Canada sometime after 1820 and dies 14 Jul 1847, probably in Nottawasaga, Simcoe Co., Ontario. Annette END email exchange ... It didn't have any new info that seemed to help me in my line so anything you come across would be welcome. Just as a quick review of the only info I have on my Michal Williamson: BIRTH: Year of 1737 derived from the1802-1819 Wolford, Grenville, Ontario census. NAME: Named as "Michal" in most census records and her husband's will. Also recorded as "Mychelle" or "Michael". Listed in DRC records as "Maike" and "Mayke". Would speculate that her name was pronounced as "Michelle" since the Canadian census records the spelling as "Mychelle". MARRIAGE: Married to Thomas Lake about 1756/7 per baptismal records of her children. Marriage probably took place in New Brunswick or possibly Gravesend but have found no records. DEATH: About 1819/20. She is last named in the 1819 Wolford census in the household of her son Abraham. NOTE: Claud McMillan (Hist of Your People and Mine) says she is the sister to the Garret Williamson who applied for some of the land grants in Albany Co., NY. Although this may be possible, there is no evidence or records found thus far that supports this. He also states that she is the daughter of "William Williamson". Again, no evidence yet exists to support this and McMillan's assumption is probably based on an abstract of a will of William Williamson of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ. dated 24 Jun 1764, proved 16 Jun 1774 that reads "wife, Patience...my daughters, Margret Larrew and Mayke Williamson...sons, Cornelius, Samuel, William, John and Abram...Executors - Cornelius and Samuel.. .Witnesses- Peter Rettinghouse, Garret Lake, John Bolby." Since Michal had been married at least seven years and had 5 children by the time this will was written, it doesn't seem logical that she would be referred to by her maiden name "Mayke Williamson" when her sister was referred to by her married name of "Margret Larrew". For this reason I don't think this is enough evidence to claim this William Williamson as Michal's father. (Garret Lake who witnessed Wm. Williamson's will was most probably the son of Thomas Lake and wife Jane of Hunterdon Co. This family was 2nd cousins to our Thomas Lake.) NOTE: 21 Aug 1797 - Petition of Michal Lake. "petitioner is the wife of Thomas Lake, a Loyal subject who joined the Royal Standard in the year 1777, your petitioner being the daughter of an undoubted Loyalist and having received no lands humbly pray ...may be granted to her a location of 200 acres on the river Raddo (Rideau) in the township of Wolford on Lot 7 in the 3rd Concession." (L Bundle Misc, 1797-1834 RG 1, L 3, vol 306 a). So, any info you come across regarding a Michal/Mayke Williamson born c1737 who was a daughter of a Loyalist would be great. END update to the info provided by T.S. & A.F. Truesdell [mailto:atrue@garlic.com] above Rev. 2006 BEGIN NOTE: It is likely that Michal was the daughter of a Garret Williamson (and his wife, Marya) who was a son of Jacobus Williamson, a son of William Williamson and Mayke Pieterse Wycoff. The descendant line of Jacobus Williamson is incomplete and there is not much in the land, probate or church records in NJ to give other evidence. What is known is that a Garret Williamson went to NY at the time when the LAKE family settled their land grants there. From a process of elimination of what is known about the other related Williamson families in NJ, combined with recent DNA testing, it is probable that Garret was the son of Jacobus. Garret is also listed as a "Freeholder in Western Precinct of Somerset County, 1753", "Gen Mag of NJ, vol 18" along with men listed above as pew holders. DNA evidence suggests that Garret is the father of the Jacobus Williamson (married Mary Barber) who also went to NY and was a settler on the patents. From the "Minutes of the Albany Committee of Correspondence", Vol 1. Jacobus Williamson is named as member of Albany Committee Chamber, 1 Mar 1776, along with Henry Leake and John Abbot, participants in Schneider Patent. Also "Committee of Hosick District" elected five Members to represent said District: Isaac Lansingh, Adam Vrooman, Jacobus Williamson, Henry Leake and John Abbot. It is more likely than not that this Jacobus Williamson and Michal Williamson are the older children of Garret Williamson and his wife, Marya of Somerset Co., NJ.
