From: Annette Truesdell atrue@garlic.com Date: Fri, 11 Mar 2016 16:55:47 -0800 BEGIN This is my interpretation of what I've found in the records for Nicholas Lake, son of Nicholas Lake and Mary Johnson: BIRTH: c 1736. Named as a son in will of Nicholas Lake after Thomas and before Abraham. Article appearing in "Somerset Co. Hist Quarterly", vol VI, 1917, pg 160 regarding Jacobus Lake says "He had a brother Nicholas, who lived at New Brunswick". NOTE: It has been assumed in other family histories that this Nicholas was the one who married Rhody Broodwell. This is an error. By comparing baptismal records from Schaghticoke DRC of the children of Nicholas Lake and Rhody Broadwell with Canadian land petitions/court records of children and descendants of "Nicholas Lake, UEL of Sidney or Ernestown", there is evidence that Nicholas Lake, who married Rhody Broodwell was the son of John Lake and Margaret Snider. (see notes for their family). MARR: am assuming him to be the same as found in Schaghticoke DRC with wife, Marytje Snyder. The fact that Nicholas' brother, Henry and Henry's wife Mary are witnesses of the baptism of his child, Maria is circumstantial evidence supporting this theory. Three known children. 1. Cornelius - "Cornelis" b. 12 Jan 1768. Parents Nicolaas Leek and Marytje Snyder, "Gen of the First Settlers of Albany", J. Pearson, pb 1976, pg 74. 2. Maria - 14 Jun 1774 to Nicholas Leeck and Mattie Snyder, wit. Henderick Leeck and Marytie Leeck, Schaghticoke DRC records. 3. Jacob - 15 Feb 1776 to Nicholas Leack and Mattie Snyder, Schaghticoke DRC records. NOTE: The following are assumed children, still seeking further evidence: 4. Nicholas - b. c1757, name per Schagticoke DRC records for baptisms of his children with Mattha Tealor. Linking him as a child of Nicholas Lake, Jr and Mary Snyder. This is an assumption that has NOT YET BEEN PROVEN but since the brothers of Nicholas Lake, Sr can be eliminated as his parent, seems to be the most likely case. 5. Margaret - b. 1760, m. 1790 John Longwell. Other researchers believe her to be the daughter of Nicholas Lake and Rhody Broadwell. That assumption is not consistent with Nicholas and Rhody's dau having a baptismal date of 9 Jan 1773 and this Margaret having a birth year of 1760 per Longwell Cemetery records. Am linking her as a daughter of Nicholas Lake and Marytje Snyder although many do not agree with this placement. Per Rev. John Langhorn's Anglican Registers 1787-1814, it lists John Longwill (Longwell) 2nd twp. (Ernestown) & Margaret Lake, same (also of 2nd twp) m.15 Sept 1790. Matthew Clark, Samuel McCoy, Jas. Languil, Abrbm. Lake. Their children as listed in McMillan's "Hist of My People and Yours", pg 485: William Longwell; James Longwell; John W. Longwell, b. 3 Jan 1802; Mary Longwell; Lydia Longwell; Letetia Longwell; Betsey Longwell. Not sure of the accuracy of this account. Her Petition dated 14 Dec 1790, "The memorial of Margaret Longwell... dau of Nicholas Lake late private in Col. Peters Regiment... humbly prays that two hundred acres of land may be assigned her as the daughter of a Loyalist in the Eighth Township..." (Sidney Twp was the Eighth Township in the Mecklenburg District.) Other researchers infer this to mean Nicholas Lake was a Loyalist residing in the Eighth Twp. I interpret this as the Eighth Twp being the location of where Margaret Longwell is petioning for land. As a note, Nicholas Lake who is reported as having died in1777 was a member of Capt. Simeon Covil's company. This company was one of those in Col. John Peters Regiment. This is consistent with Margaret Longwell's petition. Her birth and death dates are found in cemetery records of the Longwell Cemetery, transcribed by Anne Rowe, "John Longwell, UEL 1757-1841, his wife, Margaret Lake 1760-1847". Photo of headstone confirms her birth year as 1760. HISTORY: Abt 1736 - assumed date of birth, prob NJ. Note: birth date could have been earlier. 21 Nov 1761 - 5000 acres in the town of Whitecreek, bounded S. by Wallomsack, W. by Cambridge &c., was granted to Arent Van CORLAER, Nicholas LAKE Jun., James LAKE, Thomas LAKE and John LAKE. Land divided into 31 lots. Lots 6,10,15,28,4 assigned to James Lake. 1761 - Mohawk Patentees, 1705-1774, "The Mohawk" vol 10, pg 21. 16 Sep 1761, Nicholas Lake a participant with 15 others; 20,0000 acres in Montgomery Co. in Towns of Oppenheim and Palatine. A Waldron Blauw (possible relative of Nicholas' bro-in-law, Cornelius Blau) is also on this list. 1763 - probably same as found on list of freeholders found in "Chronicles of New Brunswick" pb in 1867 as being the list of freeholders when Mayor William Ouke took office in 1763 but it is also possible that he has removed to NY by this time and the enumeration is for his father. 1766 - Halfmoon, NY Tax list,"Upstate New York in the 1760's", Florence Christoph, pg 107. Note: Halfmoon is now in Saratoga Co. however at time that tax list was prepared, Halfmoon included "Schactakock" i.e. Schagticoke, and Saratoga. Tax list is dated 18 Feb 1766 but apparently contains assessments for two different years as each name is followed by two tax values which are not always the same. Niecolaes Luck/Leek 2; 2 Also listed were known neighbors/family of the Lake family: John Waldo 1; 1 Daniel Halenbeeck (Hollinbeck) 2; 2 (married to Gurtje/Charity Snyder, dau of Henry Snyder and Sarah Lake.) John Wettick 2; 2 Peter Huyck (Huyk/Quick) 1; 1 (married to Elizabeth Johnson, dau of Mathias Johnson and Eleanor Lake.) John Luck/Leek 2; 2 Arent Corlaer 1; 1 (married to Mary Lake.) 1777 - most probably the Nicholas Lake, Jr. who died 16 Aug 1777 in the Burgoyne campaign at the Battle of Bennington per Capt. Simeon Covel's Company Book, at Canadian Archives, Ottawa, Ontario, cited in McMillan's "Hist of My People and Yours". END Date: Sat, 2 May 2020 02:16:57 -0400 From: "Craig Kanalley ckanalley@gmail.com [loyalist-lake-history]" BEGIN This thread was a while ago, but I stumbled on it as I was looking up Margaret (Lake) Longwell and what we knew about her. Annette has her as a daughter of Nicholas Lake (Jr) and Marytje Snyder, and she lists the many reasons backing this up. Nicholas Lake (Jr), her father, was believed to be the Loyalist Lake who died at the Battle of Bennington on 16 August 1777. Wesley had asks what came of the descendants of Nicholas....   I did some digging and they went west.  His son Cornelius Lake (b. 1768 NY) moved to Ohio, and had 2 sons with his wife Abigail - Nicholas & Lewis Lake, and a daughter Clarissa.  Another son Jacob Lake (b. 1776) moved to Western New York - my neck of the woods - living in Orleans County which is between Niagara Falls/Buffalo and Rochester.  Jacob had 6 sons with his wife Hannah - John, Brownell, Napoleon, Lamont, Ebenezer and Mortimer Lake.  Some descendants moved on to Indiana and Michigan, and further west. I don't think I've come across any of these Lakes in our DNA matches yet, but I'll keep an eye out - some of us may be doubly related to them (Lake & Snyder). END message exchange ... I’ve looked at Katherine’s ancestral line and there are source records to confirm her line back to (–6-) John Lake and Orange Blanchard. This John Lake was born 16 Feb 1786 per Hillside Cemetery inscriptions and the Town of Holley "Pioneer Association Minutes". His birthplace of "Hoosick, NY" is cited in the "Town of Murray Early Records". The obituary of his son, Stuart, (printed in the LAKE/LEAKE Newsletter v4#3 Sep 1997, pg 8) says John settled in Murray, Orleans Co., NY in 1811 and that there were 14 children in this family, 12 who reached manhood and womanhood. "Illustrated History of Orleans Co., NY 1879" says John was drafted in 1812. In 1908, all his children were dead but one, which would have been Orson. The obituary of his son, Orson Lake, (LAKE/LEAKE Newsletter, v4#1 Mar 1997, pg 7) says that John Lake purchased his farm in Orleans Co. in 1814. He was one of the first settlers of the area of Holley, Orleans Co., NY. When Orson died in 1916, he was the last survivor of a family of thirteen children. (Difference in number of children in the obits.) When "Pioneer History of Orleans County" was printed, John Lake could not be prevailed upon to add his name to the history, and so does not appear as an "early pioneer". In my database, I have linked John as a son of (-7-)Nicholas Lake and Matye Tealor, based on his birthplace and year of birth. This is NOT YET PROVEN but is an assumed relationship based on the elimination of what is known about the other Lake men living in Hoosick at the time of John's birth. John was probably the nephew of Jacob Lake, not a son given their birthdates. Wesley Johnston : May 09 2020 05:38PM So if Nicholas Lake and Matye Tealor are the correct parents of John (which is NOT YET PROVEN), then the revised line of Kathryn's ancestry would be: Kathryn Sutcliffe (c1980) <-1- Floyd Sutcliffe (1952) <-2- Doris Lake (1916) <-3- Frank Lake (1889) <-4- John Lake (1862) <-5- Otho Lake (1823) <-6- John Lake (1786) <-7- Nicholas Lake (c 1757) <-8- Nicholas Lake (1736-1777 Battle of Bennington) <-9- Nicholas Lake (1692) and Mary/Matje/Mattie Johnson/Janszen (1696) END Posted by: Annette Truesdell Date: June 26, 1998 at 10:29:45 BEGIN baptismal records.
