email exchange ... BEGIN Joseph Lake of Staten Island, New York Posted by: Dottie LaBlue Date: May 30, 2001 at 12:26:42 Looking for info on Joseph Lake born abt 1772 m Mary Bodine abt 1798. I believe he was the s/o Abraham Lake and Aeltie Burbank married abt 1761. If so, he had a brother named Cornelius born abt 1770, and a sister Alida born abt 1778. Don't have any info on any other siblings. There are several Joseph Lakes born about that same time, so it is rather confusing. My husband is a descendant of Joseph Lake and Mary Bodine's son, Cornelius Lake born abt 1806. I can trace back through Mary Bodine's family tree, but have run into a problem with Joseph's family. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated. Re: Joseph Lake of Staten Island, New York Posted by: Annette F. Truesdell Date: May 31, 2001 at 12:45:46 It is assumed that Joseph was the son of Abraham Lake and Aeltje Burbank. From my notes: JOSEPH LAKE NAME: "Lake Fam of Gravesend and Staten Island", by Mullane/Johnson identify him as the son of Abraham Lake based on an entry into an "Account Book" belonging to Richard Conner in c1801. Book is now at the Richmondtown Museuem. The name "Joseph, son of Abraham Lake" appears in the accounts. BIRTH: 1 Nov 1772 per "Facts Regarding One Joseph Lake", by Elmer G. Van Name, LDS FHL 929.2#188 citing the Price Family bible. Year of birth could actually be 1773 per his headstone and bible record may be in error. The bible was printed in 1832 and so the entry was made from someone's memory, after the fact. Not found in any church records. MARR: 1st) Mary/Polly Bodine, dau of John Bodine and Catherine Britton. 2nd) 2 Jun 1839 Ann Egbert Prall. DEATH: 16 Mar 1854 "age 81" per tombstone in Moravian Cemetery. HISTORY: 1802 - carpenter "of Castleton" bought land at the "Clove" adjoing Richard Tysen from Hon. John Housemand. 1820 - Joseph Lake, a weaver of Castleton sold Housemand property to George Brown. 1835 - joined in sale of land of Bodine Estate. 16 Aug 1836 - carpenter, living at Northfield, bought land at Westfield from his son, John B. 3 May 1836 - bougt 20 acres adjoining John Bodine Estate at Castleton. 1853 - sold 20 acres to John H. Sprague, son-in-law of second wife. 22 Aug 1836 - caprpenter, sold to Jacob Burckertf 46 acres at Westfield called "Simonson's Island". On same day, Jacob Burckert sold to Joseph Lake of Castleton, a dwelling and lot at Castleton. Must have been exchange of properties. 1840 - living in Castleton, sold land at Westfield back to son John. In regard to Abraham Lake: ABRAHAM LAKE NAME: NYG&BR, vol 37-2, pg 130. BIRTH: bp 26 Mar 1731 Abraham, to Joseph Lake and Aaltje Barbank. wit. Jan Barbank and Lea Hagewout. Note: witnesses were probably Aaltje's brother John and his wife. MARR: 7 Jul 1761 Altje Burbank. She has the same name as Abraham's mother. Probably a niece or cousin of his mother. CHILDREN: 1. Cornelius, named as son in Adams/Risley. 2. Alida, named as dau in Adams/Risley. 3. Desire, b. 19 Jul 1772 per family records of Sally Chirlin, email chirlin@norwich.net. 4. Joseph, assumed son. NOTE: may be others. NOTE: probably the father of Mary Lake, b. 5 Aug 1771 who married Abraham Merrill of Staten Island. She named her first two children Abraham and Aletta. JOSEPH LAKE: NAME: baptsimal records, Port Richmond DRC, NYG&BR, vol 36 pg 181. BIRTH: bp 20 Apr 1708, Joseph son of Abraham Leeck. Wit. Barent Marlin and wife. Note: Altje Burbank's mother was Marritje Martling. Barent could have been Altje's uncle or grandparent. MARR: "Gen of Lake Fam", Adams/Risley, pg 20, married to Aeltie Burbank. This appears to be accurate based on the naming pattern of their children: Abraham, Clasje, Aeltie/Latiche, Maria, and Sarah. ABRAHAM LAKE: BIRTH: 1676, Assumed son of John Lake and Ann Spicer. Birth year of 1676 based on Staten Island census of 1706 where Abraham is named and listed as being 30 years old per Stillwell. Bergen in his "Early Settlers" states that Abraham is a son of Daniel Lake and Alice Stillwell and twin of Joseph. No other sources cited. This is incorrect based on Abraham's age and the fact that Daniel and Alice didn't marry until about 1684. MARR: c1695 to Classje Langestraat or Longstreet, dau of Dirck Stoffel Langestraat and Katrina van Lieuwen. This is assumed from baptismal record of their son John found in Brooklyn DRC records. CHILDREN: 1. John, bp 26 Apr 1696 Brooklyn DRC. 2. Richard, found in 1706 Staten Island census. 3. Daniel, 1706 SI census. 4. Ann, 1706 SI census. 5. Sarah, 1706 SI census. 6. Joseph, bp 20 Aug 1708 Port Richmond DRC. 7. Margaret, 25 Jul 1710 Port Richmond DRC. 8. Abraham, 19 Apr 1715, Port Richmond DRC. HISTORY: 2 Jan 1691/2 - (Town Records, Book 4, p. 43) Abraham Lake and Abraham Emans to be paid by the town for repair of fences. 29 Sep 1698 - recorded his cattle mark on Staten Island (Mullane/Johnson). Apr 1705 - named in an instrument recorded for the "Commissionr of Highways" as living in the County of Richmond. 1706 - Staten Island census of 1706 records age as 30 years per Stillwell. 1715 - Abraham, John and Richard appear as members of the No. Comp of Militia on Staten Island per Stillwell. NOTE: disappears from the Staten Island records after 1715. Between the years 1727-39, an Abraham and Daniel Lake appear as witnesses on wills in Baltimore and Kent Co., MD. This bears further research to see if perhaps Abraham could have removed to MD. NOTE: From unpublished Manuscript by Mrs. Judy Cassidy, "LAMBERT DORLAND & HARMPTJE PIETERS", "While living in Brooklyn, Lambert Dorlandt and others purchased land, confiscated from Charles Gabry, and obtained from Governor Lovelace on or before Feb. 3, 1672/73... In DEC 1680 he applied for 130 acres, Northside of Staten Island, the front of Gov. Lovelaces land to the water side. Philip Wells surveyed the 145 acres of land laid out for Lambert Dorland. This was described as being situated on the North East side of Staten Island against Constables Hook... It totaled 130 acres with 8 rod by the water side being left for a highway together with a 15 acre meadow against John Tunisons Neck on the North West side of the Island. He received the Patent Dec. 2, 1680. There is a survey map attached to this document. The land was resurveyed on May 26, 1712 by Philip Wells. A road was laid out on the 23 of March 1704/5, described as from the house where Abraham Lake now dwells along the up land of the waterside and along the front of Justice Duxbury, Lambert Durland, Nich Tunison, Garret Veighte so over a bridge to be make over a creek etc. This is probably todays Shore Road".
