Truesdell" Subject: Fwd: Re: Williamson DNA results Cc: RRW122433@aol.com, Dotw7@aol.com, Emfreas@cs.com, Gschmidt48@aol.com BEGIN To Perry and all, I've forwarded to you, at the end of this message, a copy of the email response I sent yesterday to Claudia regarding her Samuel Williamson. (Claudia's comments are in black and my response is in blue.) Claudia is new to this research and isn't familiar with the family migrations from L.I. to NJ and later to the NY land grants. She is not as confident of the identification of her Samuel as I am. Feel free to let me know if any of my response may be in error. I have been following Claudia's research and correspondence with Perry because I have felt that there is a probable relationship between her Williamson family and mine. I have always suspected that my Michal/Mychelle/Mayke Williamson was the child of a Garret Williamson but until the DNA results provided evidence of a previously unidentified Garret Williamson, couldn't figure out where she fit with the known Garret Williamsons. My Michal Williamson was born c1737 per Canadian census records. If she is indeed a daughter of Garret and Marya Williamson, she would have been an older sister to Claudia's Jacobus. The children of my Michal Williamson and Thomas Lake were named: Nicklass - probably named for paternal grandfather Garret - would suggest he was named for maternal grandfather Hendrick - probably named for paternal uncle and gr-grandfather Marya - would suggest she was named for maternal grandmother as well as paternal grandmother Elizabeth ? Kobus/James - Thomas had an older brother named Jacobus Catherine ? (possibly named for Michal's sister if she was indeed daughter of Garret and Marya) Sarah - Thomas had an older sister named Sarah Jane - Thomas had an older sister named Jane John - Thomas had an older brother and gr-grandfather named John Maragrita/Margaret - Thomas had a younger sister Margaret Abraham - Thomas had a younger brother Abraham Michal - named for mother Nicholas (2nd by this name) Hendrica/Henrietta ? Garret Williamson was a participant in the Schneider/Snyder Land Patent. (Henry Snyder was married to both Sarah and later Jane Lake, sisters of Thomas Lake.) Thomas Lake was a participant in the Van Corlaer Land Patent. (Arent Van Corlaer was married to Mary Lake, sister of Thomas Lake.) These land grants were next to each other in NY and the grantees all removed from Somerset/Middlesex counties in NJ where they had been neighbors. It makes sense to me that Garret would have been Michal's father but no primary evidence exists to prove it. Anything that you may come across in your Williamson research that would either promote or refute these assumptions would be appreciated. -------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 09 Jan 2005 12:48:14 -0800 To: claudiaakus@aol.com From: T.S.A.F. Truesdell Subject: Re: Williamson DNA results At 02:08 AM 1/8/2005 -0500, you wrote: Annette, Thank you for the quick response. Yes, I do believe my line now comes from the Willem Gerritsen line. from the DNA results. I am still not convinced that the Samuel that is the son of Yacoobes Williamson is my Samuel. I realize that the date you give is a baptism date at the Harlingen DRC (3 Jun 1765), however, my Samuel swears to the following in his Rev. War Appl.: He was born in the town of Princetown in the County of Summerset and State of New Jersey on the 13th April 1764 (there seems to be almost a year between birth and baptism if it is the same Samuel). It was common for there to be big gaps between birth and baptism. At times, there was no resident pastor at the church and they had to wait for a traveling one to come to the area to perform the baptisms and even marriages. People would live in common law until the church wedding. Sometimes the couple did not like the current preacher and would wait until another was appointed. Another explanation is that the bible date is a year off. Often the bible records were written at a much later time and errors could occur. If Samuel was relying on the bible record to give his birth year, it may have been in error. I have found this to have happened several times in my own family research. Princetown would have been the community of Princeton. Princeton is situated on present day Hwy 27 which in colonial times was known as The Great Highway. It connected New Brunswick to Trenton. The Williamson families that we've been researching moved from New York into New Brunswick, and then spread out into communities along this highway and throughout Somerset, Middlesex and Hunterdon counties. That there is a record of his age in his father's bible now or lately a resident of Onondaga County New York. That he resided when called to service in the town of Hosick, Rensselaer (then the county of Albany) and state of New York that since the Revolutionary war he has resided in the town of Richfield, Otsego County, New York and now resides there. This application was dated 16 Oct 1832. Again, the evidence is in the places of residence. From land records and church records, we know that a couple named Garret and Mary Williamson had a son, Kobus (Jacobus/Jacob) baptized at the Harlingen DRC 18 Feb 1743. This would imply that they lived somewhere within a 10 mile radius from the church. Data in the Roylance papers gives Jacob as having a birth date of 11 Jan 1743, his baptism taking place a month after birth. Then, 20 years later, there is a Jacobus and Mary Williamson who are having their children baptized at the Harlingen church. The names of the first 3 children fit the Dutch naming pattern of the day if we assume the grandparents are Garret/Mary Williamson and Samuel/Alida Barber: Mary - named for paternal grandmother Samuel - named for maternal grandfather Garret - named for paternal grandfather The Roylance papers also name Alida and James as children of this couple. This would continue the naming pattern: Alida - named for maternal grandmother James - named for father I am assuming that someone in the Roylance family had access or copies of the bible referred to in Samuel's pension because there are references to Jacob's bible in Fred Bowman's correspondence with the Roylances, but no copies of the pages or data. Now in regard to the migration to New York, a number of families from Somerset Co. went as a group to settle in NY on what was the Schneider Patent, located in Hoosick. These settlers were Hendrick Schneider/Snyder (husband of Jane Lake); John Wetteck; Hendrick Lake (brother of Jane Lake); John Johnson (nephew of Jane Lake); Garrett Williamson; Nathaniel Ackerly; Benjamin Abbott; William Taylor and Martinus Voorhees. The Van Corlaer Patent was settled by Arent Van Corlaer (husband of Mary Lake); Nicholas Lake; Jacobus Lake; John Lake and Thomas Lake. The Schneider Patent and Van Corlaer patent were next to each other in what is now Rensselaer and Washington Counties, NY. I descend from Thomas Lake whose wife was Mychelle Williamson. It is my belief that my Mychelle Williamson was the daughter of Garret Williamson and was a sister of Jacobus Williamson. Unfortunately, a lack of records has hindered this identification. My assumption of this relationship, however, is again based on the places where I know this couple lived and the naming pattern of their children. You have mentioned a Garret and I think there is some confusion here; I am not sure I have a Garret other than there is one that is living fairly close to Samuel in the 1800 census of Otsego Co, NY both are in the age bracket of 26-45. This Garret would have been Samuel's brother. Samuel is the only one I am sure of. The first Garret Williamson is the one who left Somerset Co. NJ and settled in Hoosick on the Schneider Patent in the 1760s. Garret was the father of Jacobus/Jacob. Jacob and Mary obviously joined his father in NY sometime in the early 1770s. Jacob and his wife, Mary had their first children baptized at the Harlingen church in NJ. Then after removing to NY had other children baptized at the Schagticoke DRC. I think the idea of my having an ancestor Garret comes from the idea that Samuel is from Laurens Williamson line. Now that there is DNA evidence that suggests otherwise, things have to be rethought. It is from the DNA evidence that we can conclude that the Garret Williamson who was the son of Laurens Williamson is NOT the same Garret Williamson who is the father of Jacobus. We can now say with confidence that there were two different Garret Williamsons who were contemporaries. It is obvious that the naming patterns that Perry has been working on does not work in this generation. It seems to me that they have already married out of the Dutch culture and they have also changed religion. -- Philander is not a Dutch name nor is his brother's Lorenzo Dow. The naming patterns started to change by the end of the 1700s as well as many religious affiliations. My LAKEs began to become Methodist and Quaker after they left NJ. I think that you can probably be confident in your Samuel being the same one as was baptized at the Harlingen DRC. The big question now is who was the father of Garret Williamson? From your cousin's DNA testing, it is more probable than not that Garret's father is one of William Willemse's sons, but which one? Per H. Stryker-Rodda, in the 1707 New Utrecht census, Hendrick, Maria his wife and Maria his daughter are mentioned, indicating that dau Maria was the oldest child since children under ten were not usually counted, and records of the Brooklyn DRC indicate her brother John/Johannes was bp 26 Sep 1703. DEATH: Presumed to be the "Mary Lake of Wight Kreek, Albany Co." found in "Genealogical Data from Administration Papers from the NY State Court of Appeals in Albany", Dr. Kenneth Scott, pub 1972, pg 183. "6 Nov 1783 - Administrator, Henry Lake, farmer, son of deceased; bondsman: Henry Lake and Nicholas Lake, farmers, and Cornelius Waldron, cordwainer, of Albany Co. wit. John Shipboy, Francis Follet". aftruesdell originally shared this 7 years ago story History of Nicholas Lake of Somerset, NJ 1690-1771 from PAF files of Annette F. Truesdell Rev. 2013 BIRTH: Research of Harriet Stryker-Rodda indicates he was probably born in Gravesend, Long Island about 1692/1695. MARR: Mary or Maria Johnson/Janszen, dau of Hendrick Janszen and Mary Myndertse. Named as "Maria Lake" in their will. DEATH: Will dated 23 Aug 1768, has a codicil dated 7 Oct 1768 and was proved 30 Oct 1771. (NJ Wills v: 294) Will was recorded in both Somerset and Middlesex Counties. Microfilm of will book states "papers in too poor of condition to film" but the last page, which is the codicil was filmed and reads, "Know all men by these presents that I Nicholas Lake have settled my acounts with my children as I intended it shall be settled. I wold have my executors not to alowe any acounts of my childrens as witness my hand this seventh day of October 1768". His mark -- initials NL -- Nicholas Lake. HIST: Abt 1692 - Nicholas born, prob Gravesend, L.I. Abt 1713/15 - marries Mary Johnson. 1715 - listed in the Third Troop of Gravesend militia serving under Capt. Aartt Van Pelt. Abt 1714/19 - son Hendrick, oldest son, born either Gravesend or Monmouth Co., NJ. Abt 1715/20 - dau Eleanor born, either Gravesend or Monmouth Co., NJ. Note: Eleanor could have been born before Henry. No evidence for her birth year other than an approximate date based on her marriage in 1739 to Mathias Johnson. Jan 1718 - reference to "lands of Nicholas Lake" is made in deed from John Lawrence and Rachel his wife of Freehold to Aert Williamson of Flatlands in Kings Co. , NY dated 3 Jan 1718, Book E, p. 332 Monmouth clerk's office (printed in "Early Dutch Settlers of Monmouth", pg 107). The land is part of a tract called "Cooper's Neck" and beginning at a corner of land formerly Gov. Laurie's; bounded S.W. partly by lands of Nicholas Lake and partly by lands formerly Isaac Bryan's; S.E by the brook that parts it from Colts Neck; E. by lands of Peter Nevius and N.E. by unsurveyed lands. Abt 1734 - son Thomas born (based on Canadian census data), probably Middlesex Co. Abt 1736 - son Nicholas Jr. born prob Middlesex Co., NJ. Note: this birth date is an assumption, could have been earlier. Need further research on this son. 3 Mar 1736 - Nicholas purchased land in Somerset Co. from John Hamilton (Bk. E-2, p.211) 19 Feb 1738 - son Abraham (1st of this name) bp Nw Brnswk DRC, Middlesex. 20 Feb 1739 - Nicholas sold land in Somerset Co., NJ. to "Michael Blaw" (Bk. B-3, p.256). Note: Prior to 1742, John Blaw purchased 400 acres of farmland from Abraham Van Horn, a merchant of New York City and a large New Jersey landholder, and 95 acres adjacent to this tract from Nicholas Lake of New Brunswick, NJ. This land is located about one-half mile south of Blawenburg, Montgomery Twp., Somerset County, NJ, on the Great Road leading to what is now Mercer County. On 10 January 1740/1 John Blaw split his plantation in Montgomery Twp. of Somerset County, and sold the east half to his son, Michael. Michael had previously (20 February 1738/9) purchased 100 acres from Nicholas Lake, which was adjacent to the 247.5 acres he received from his father. Beden's Brook runs easterly through the middle of his property and Michael built a mill on that stream near the west boundary of his property. Later, the "Great Road" was built to provide access to the mill and the town of Blawenburg is believed by local historians to have been named for Michael Blaw and/or his mill. Michael Blaw's son, Cornelius, married Nicholas' dau, Margaret Lake. 16 Apr 1739 - Nicholas sold land in Somerset Co., NJ to John Gordon (Bk. H-2, p.374). 31 May 1739 - dau Margaret bp Nw Brnswk DRC, Middlesex. 15 Jun 1741 - 2nd son named Abraham bp Nw Brnswk DRC, Middlesex. 1745 - location of Nicholas' farm per survey map done in 1745 by John Dalley is on the old highway from New Brunswick to Trenton, just to the west of the One Mile Run. 1747 - LDS FILM 0824088 Item 2 "Chronicles of New Brunswick, New Jersey, 1667-1931" by John P. Wall, Page 27. Nicholas Lake is on a list of 91 freeholders which was taken from the City Charter and Ordinances and Philip French's Lease Book which was dated 1747 when Mayor James Hude took office. The list is alphabetical and Nicholas is the only LAKE on the New Brunswick list. Feb 1763 - Page 29 of "Chronicles" is a list of New Brunswick Freeholders in February 1763 when Mayor William Ouke took office. Persons number 14, 15 and 16 were John Lake, Thomas Lake and Hendrick Lake. Person number 48 was Nicholas Lake. This is the same list of persons which was taken by Sheriff John Deare and found on LDS FILM 1024666, Item 3 Middlesex Co. Land records, Freeholders List by John Deare, Sheriff, listed by residence, by town, no date. NOTE: In "First Settlers of Ye Plantations of Piscataway and Woodsridge Olde East New Jersey part 3", Orra Eugene Monnette, The Leroy Carman Press, California, pb1931, the author refers to two lists of New Brunswick, Middlesex Co. Freeholders from the years 1748 and 1750. He identifies the 1748 list as being an enumeration of Sheriff John Deare. The date of the 1750 list comes from a letter the author received from the NJ State Archives. The letter states that the 1750 date is approximate. The list is not alphabetical but by residence. Named are John Lake, Henry Lake and Thomas Lake as well as Nicholas Lake. This is the same list identified in "Chronicles of New Brunswick" as being the list of freeholders when Mayor William Ouke took office in 1763. Since the letter from the NJ State Archives states that the date is approximate, a date of 1763 which is based on Mayor Ouke's term in office is probably more accurate. The 1748 Sheriff Deare list identified by Monnette is identical to the 1750 NJ State Archives list. I believe that Monnette has inaccurately identified it and the assumption of the approximate date of 1750 by the NJ State Archives is in error. 1766 - Nicholas may have been living with one of his children (prob Jacobus) because Jacobus is the only property owner named on the 1766 Azariah Dunham map. Property is on the New Brunswick to Trenton highway, at the bend in the road just to the west of the 10 Mile Run. There is no property owner named at the 1 Mile Location. (Possibility exists that he could have been the Nicholas Lake in 1761 who participated in the Mohawk Patent although no NY property was identified in his will. Identity of that Nicholas Lake more likely Nicholas Jr.) 23 Aug 1768 - Nicholas' will written. 7 Oct 1768 - codicil added. 30 Oct 1771 - will proved (Somerset archives Bk K, p.515). The order which the children in will are named: HENDRICK (Henry) as eldest son received 10 pounds in excess of his 1/11th part; JOHN; JACOBUS; THOMAS; NICHOLAS; ABRAHAM; ELEANOR, married Mathias Johnson and had John and Elizabeth, who m: Peter Huyk; MARY; SARAH, m: Hendrick Schnider and had Mary, m: Aron Hankeson (Col. Hendrick Lake and Hendrick Schneyder were both listed in Schneider patent, NY, 1762. Hendrick Schnider is listed here as married to Sarah, and later Jane Lake. Children are listed. One of these could be the father of Henry Christopher. 4 years ago END
