from Sally A. Shreeve, 17 Mar 2002 BEGIN Modified Register for Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg First Generation 1. Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg was born1 in 1600/1610 in Oldenburg, Germany. He died2 in 1661 in New Utrech,New Holland,New York. HIS: Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg, alias De Mof, was most likely born in Germany betwen 1600 and 1610, since he was foreman of a farm by 1632. He died probably at New Utrecht in the latter part of 1661. His wife Clara Maathys in a deposition on 1 November 1641 stated that she was 31 years of age. They eloped around 21 Jul 1639. Source: "The Garrison-Gerritsen Descendants of Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg alias Gerrit De Mof" from The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 124, January 1993, Number 1, (GER HIS 001) P. 3. HIS: Gerrit Jansen van Oldenburg was also known as "Gerrit de Mof" or "ye Muffe." In Dutch, "de Mof" is a derogatory term meaning "the German," and "van Oldenburg" indicated that Gerrit Jansen probably came from the county (Grafschaft) of Oldenburg in northwestern Germany, or the city of the same name. (GER HIS 001) P. 1. Gerrit Jansen van Oldenburg is first found in New Netherland in July 1632 when he was foreman of Kiliaen Van Rensselaer's farm on Manhattan Island; he apparently did not continue in that position, and in 1636 requested the grant of another farm from Van Rensselaer. In May 1638 he and Volkert Evertsen leased the farm "walensteyn" from Barent Dircksen. By July 1638 his problems has begun. at that time Teunis Nyssen brought court action against him for failure to deliver a cow. In May 1639 Gerrit and Volkert agreed to buy the farm from Barent Dircksen and then they leased it to Willem Willemsen and Jan Habsen. (GER HIS 001) P. 2. According to O'Callaghan's translation, Gerrit was charged with rape 21 July 1629, but Van Laer's translation says the charge was "eloping with a certain widow." Gerrit pleaded that he and Clara Matthys were betrothed. He was fined 20 guilders and had to sign a 100 guilder note to obtain Clara's release from her contract with Jonas Bronck. (GER HIS 001) P. 2. Issac Abrahamsen brought court action against Gerrit's partner Volkert Evertsen on 27 October 1639 and against "Gerrit de Moff" on 1 December 1639. On 23 Feb 1640 Barent Dircksen stated in court that he was ready to deliver the farm, provided Gerrit furnished security for the purchase money. Gerrit answered that he was drunk when he made the purchase and thus was not held by it. The dispute was referred to referees. Sometime in late February agreed to pay Barent Dircksen 232 guilders. In spite of all this, he lost his farm as his name is not associated with it again. (GER HIS 001) P. 2. A patent for the farm "Pannebacker's Bouwery" on Manhattan was issued 17 February 1646, which he exchanged with Thomas Hall for "Mallesmit's Berg" on 27 Oct 1649 which Gerrit soon lost. (GER HIS 001) P. 2 and 3. NOTE: They possibly had a child, Claertie, no baptism found, would have to be born about 1648 or later. (GER HIS 001) P. 3. Gerrit married3 Clara Matthys about 21 Jul 1639. Clara was born1 in 1610. HIS: On 1 Nov 1641 she stated that she was was 31 years of age. (GER HIS 001) P. 3. HIS: Shown as grandparent of Cornelius Garretson: Source: Dutch-Colonies-L@rootsweb.com posting by Wayne, email WayneLII@aol.com on 23 Jun 1999(GER HIS 003) Gerrit and Clara had the following children: 2 F i. No further record for Abraham (GER HIS 001) P. 3. 5 M iv. Jacob Gerritsen was christened5 on 28 Nov 1643 in New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church,New York, New York. HIS: Died young. (GER HIS 001) P. 3. + 6 M v. Jacob Gerritsen was christened on 14 Oct 1646. Second Generation 3. Jan (John) Gerritsen (Gerrit Jansen) was christened6 on 4 Jan 1642 in New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church,New York, New York. MAR: The marriage occurred after 1711 when Peter Prall and his first wife Mary were witnesses, and before the 1714 admin. of her brother Cornelis. (GEN HIS 001) DEA: Aelje ws a baptismal sponsor with her husband 11 Oct 1719, but died before 8 Jan 1742/1743 when Peter made his will naming a wife Elizabeth. there is no eveidence that Aeltie was the mother of any of his children. (GEN HIS 001) HIS: Jan was baptised as the son of Gerrit Jansen van Oldenburg. as indicated below, he also appears on record as John, and his surname takes many forms; besides Gerrits (etc.) he is also called "De Muff" and his widow "vande haes." His children appear more ocnsistently as Gerritse(n) and Garrison. he and Elisabeth Gysberts were probably married about 1676; her patronnymic is known from the baptism of their son Jacob. John died before March 1697 when his widow Elisabeth bought some land on Staten Island. Jan received a patent on 16 January 1662 for 24 morgens of land at New Utrech. There was a draught of a confirmation patent O John Gerrits for this same land in 1680. The next record of him is on 26 January 1665 when "Jan gerresz, Living in the town of New Uytrecht" declared that he was in debt to Mr. Niclaes de Maeyer for 239 pounds and pledged his land as security for the debt (New Utrecht Town Records 1:1060109). Times must have been hard for him, as just three years later in march 1668, "John Garrits and Jacob his brother" mortgaged their wheat crop to Mr. Nicholas De Mayer, and they renewed this mortgage in April 1670 as recorded at the Court of Sessions at Gravesend in June 1670. Jan was apointed a trustee of New Utrecht in 1672. He was taxed for 24 morgens of land on the 1675 assessment list for New Utrecht, but is not on the 1676 list for that town. A draught of a patent to be granted to John Garretsen, for lands on Long Neck upon Staten Island was made 1 November 1675. A description of a survey of 80 acres on Long Neck, laid out for "Jon Garrison," was made in early 1676. This land seems never to have been actually patented to John, so again in March 1686, another description of a survey, this time for 161 acres lying upon "the point of Long Neck," was laid out for "John garrats De Muff." In 1681 John was established on Staten Island and was named tax commisioner. Elisabeth Garritse "vande haes," widow of John garritse, bouth 178 acres at the "head of Fresh Kill" from Vincent Fountaine in March 1697. She sold one half of this to Pierre Joubert on 22 May 1699. About this time she married Adam Cavlie(?) who on 22 May 1700 recorded his obligation "to deliver unto the children of John Gerritse, deceased, the said land whereon I now live after the decease of my wife Elisabeth Gerritse the late widow of John Gerritse, deceased." "The Garrison-Gerritsen Descendants of Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg alias Gerrit De Mof" from The New York Genalogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 124, January 1993, Number 1, pages 4 and 5. (GER HIS 001) HIS: In four places, in 1678, 1680, 1690, and 1696, "de haes," "haas," "hause" or "vande haes" followed the patronymic Gerrits in records concerning Jacob and Jan Garrison. In Dutch "haes" means " hare" or "rabbit," the German Hase has the same meaning. One explanation for the use of this name might be that Gerrit Jansen van Oldenburg's last land in Manhattan was called "werpoes," an Indian word for hare or rabbit. Aanother possibility, perhaps more likely, is the Haase or Hase river which flows to the south of Oldenburg. Neither this name nor "de Mof" has been found in records of Jacob and John's descendants, who were known as Gerritsen and Garrison. (GER HIS 001) P. 1. Jan married Elisabeth (Lysbeth) Gysberts about 1712. Elisabeth died about 1703 in of ,Staten Island, New York. HIS: Elisabeth must have died about 1703 for in January 1704 Johannes Garrison sold the land on which she had lived. No one of this family appears on the Staten Island Census of 1706 - 1708. (GER HIS 001) P. 5. Jan and Elisabeth had the following children: 7 M i. Johannes Gerritsen was born7 about 1678. HIS: Johannes, probably born about 1678 since he appears to be the only child who was of age in 1699. In April of that year he promised not to trouble Pierre Joubert about the land purchased from his mother. This statement was witnessed by Jacob Gerritse, most likely his brother. In May 1700 Johannes signed a declaration promising not to disturb "any of my brother nor sisters" of their equal share of the land after the decease of hs mother, Elisabeth Gerritse (Richmond Co. Deeds B: 355, 379) This suggests that Johannes had only one brother by this time, but more than one sister. The same spellings are found in the notation written in the margin of page 379: "Know all men by these presents that wee Brother and sisters are fully satisfied for this written bond of our brother Johannes Gerritse," 10 Sept. 1703. Unfortunately there are no signatures recorded. The singular "Brother" bears out the idea that the brother Jacob had died by May 1700. In January 1704 Johannes and his wife Hester sold 89 acres at the "Head of Fresh Kill," bounded by the land of Pierre Joubert. Johannes is not mentioned in the 1714 estate of his brother Cornelis so he is presumed to have died prior to him. No further record is found of Johannes or any children. "The Garrison-Gerritsen Descendants of Gerrit Jansen Van Oldenburg Alias Gerrit De Mof," The New York Genealogical and Biographical record, Vol. 124, January 1993, Number 1, p. 1 (GER HIS 001) Johannes married8 Hester. 8 M ii. Jacob Gerritsen 9 was christened10 on 30 May 1680 in Amersfoort (Flatlands), Staten Island, Richmond, New York. HIS: Jacob was baptized by the minister of the Flatbush Reformed Dutch Church, the child of Jan Gerritsz from Staten Island and Lysbeth Gysbert (Flat. Fr. Baps. 1:15). He was most likely the Jacob Gerritse who witnessed the April 1699 statement of Johannes, and died before May 1700, as explained in notes for Johannes. (GER HIS 001) + 9 M iii. Cornelius Gerritsen was born about 1682. He died on 15 Apr 1714. 10 F iv. Aeltie Gerritsen was born11 about 1685 in of, Staten Island, New York. New York City Wills, 1708-1728 p. 313, shows her relationship to her brother Cornelius and husband Peter Paral. (GER HIS 002) HIS: Married Peter Prall as his second wife. The marriage occurred after 1711 when he and his first wife Mary were witnesses, and before the 1714 admin. of her brother Cornelis. Aelje was a baptismal sponsor with her husband 11 Oct 1719, but died before 8 Jan 1742/1743 when Peter made his will naming a wife Elizabeth. There is no evidence that Aeltie was the mother of any of his children. (John E. Stillwell, "The History of Captain Nicholas Stillwell," Stillwell Genealogy, vol. e. p. 221-222. Aeltie married12 Peter Prall in 1711/1714. MAR: New York City Wills, 1708-1728 p. 313, (BRI HIS 020) and (GER HIS 001) + 11 F v. Elizabeth Gerritsen was born about 1688. 6. Jacob Gerritsen (Gerrit Jansen) was christened13 on 14 Oct 1646 in New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church,New York, New York. HIS: He appears on record as Gerritse/Gerritsen/Garrison etc. as well as de Muffe and de haes/Haas/ Hause. (GER HIS 001) P. 6. Jacob Gerrits first appears as a resident of New Utrecht when he received two cows to care for in August 1667. He and his brother John mortgaged their wheat crop in 1668. In 1671 he was listed as a debtor to the estate of Asser Levy. On 10 Oct 1674 during the brief restoration of Dutch power under gov. Colve, a survey was returned and on the same date a patent was granted to Jacob and Zeger Gerritse for 72 morgens of land south of the Fresh Kill on Staten Island. This was just before the English regained control and as stated in "Staten Island and Its Peope" "A few land grants were made by Gov.Colve but these seem to have been subsequently disregarded." There is no evidence that either Jacob or Zeger actually received any of this land. The assessment roll for New Utrech in 1675 listed Jacob with 24 morgens of land, no poll and no animals. He must have moved to Staten Island about this time as he is not in the 1676 assessment of New Utrech. (GER HIS 0010, P. 5-6. On Staten Island only four records are found for Jacob. In 1688 he was a Justice for Richmond County and sold some land to Leonard Berryman. In Feb. 1690 the Richmond County commissioners took an action and Jacob, as one of them, was recorded as "Jacob Gareson Hause." In Mar 1691 Jacob and Christian Garrotson gave a Power of Attorney to his brother John, enabling John to sell his land and receive or pay any debts owed to or by Jacob. mention is also made in the survey for a patent for Christopher Billip of land "south of the Fresh Kill extending to Jacob de Muffes his creek." Jacob and his fzmily moved to southern New Jersey about 1691. Jacob Garrison, of Cohansy, Salem County, New Jersey, made a will to have his plantation with 50 acres and appurtenances after the deathof his mother, or when 21 years of age, if his mother remarried. He also named his grandson Isaac, son of his son Isaac, lately deceased, and Isaac's wife Lidian. the grandson was to have the 50 acres formerly belonging to his father. On 9 Jun 1708 Jacob made a codicil. On 7 January 1709 Garret, Peter, Jacob and John Garrison signed a release to their mother Christian of all rights or claims which they might have to or upon the estate left by their father, jacob. This was witnessed by Fridrick Garrison. It was sworn to at Burlington, New Jersey, on 19 Sep 1709 when Jacob's will and codicil were proved. (GER HIS 001 ) P. 8. Jacob married Christina Cresson about 1673 in of New Utrech,,New York. PAR: Pierre and Rachel (Closse/Clauss) Cresson. (GER HIS 001) P. 6. Also shown as Christian and Styntie (GER HIS 001) P. 6. Peter lived in "Entrim" Twp. He named his wife Sarah and nine children: David, John, Susan, Deborah, Arther, Peter, Esther and the two youngest James and Phebe. The lst five children were not yet of age. (GER HIS 001) 14 M iii. Jacob Gerritsen was christened16 on 24 Jul 1678 in New York Reformed Dutch Church. CHR: son of Jacob Gerritsz de haes and Christina Creison. HIS: He lived and died in Salem and Cumberland counties, New Jersey where there are many records of him and his descendants. He married three times. When he made his will on 15 Jul 1750, proved 30 april 1751 he named his wife Elizabeth and his fifteen children, the last seven of whom were under age: Benjamin (B. c. 1710), christian, Rachel, Samuel, sarah, Jacob, Mary, Elizabeth, Daniel, Ephraim, William, Cornelius, Anna, Phebe, and Alphasias. (GER HIS 0010) P. 8. Jacob married (1) Unknown . Jacob married17 (2) Mary Wallen on 4 Feb 1720 in Christ Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mary was born in of ,Salem, New Jersey. Jacob married (3) Elizabeth . 15 M iv. Johannes Gerritsen was christened18 on 27 Jun 1680 in New Utrecht,,New York. CHR: Baptized at New Utrecht by the minister of the Flatbush Reformed Dutch Church as son of Jacob Gerritz Haas and Styntie Crousson (Flat Fr. Baps. 1:15). Johannes was possibly the John garrison who died intestate in Cumerland Co., N. J. in 1747. The bond of Elizabeth Garrison and Abraham Garrison as administrators was dated 10 Mar 1747. (GER HIS 001) P. 8. + 16 M v. Isaac Gerritsen was born about 1682. + 17 M vi. Abraham Gerritsen was born after 1685. He died before Sep 1705. Third Generation 9. (Undoubtedly a mistake was made when Elizabeth is said to be wife of Nathaniel Garretson instead of Nathaniel Brittain) (GER HIS 002) No widow or brothers are mentioned in the will. Cornelius had the following children: 18 M i. John Garretsen was born about 1712 in of Staten Island, Richmond, New York. Elizabeth Garretsen was born about 1714 in of Staten Island, Richmond, New York. Her name comes from the will of her father. (GER HIS 002) 11. Elizabeth Gerritsen (Jan (John) Gerritsen, Gerrit Jansen) was born21 about 1688 in of , Staten Island, New York. MAR: Early Central PA Marriages by Fisher, p.69 BIR-MAR: Compendium of Am. Gen. by Frederick A. Virkus; p. 258; birth is shown on the IGI as 13 Mar 1682 in Pembrepock, Bergen, New Jersey with mother listed as Neesje Pieterse Van Marcelis.(This I believed for some time was correct-- showing Gerrit Gerritsen as the father who also had a wife Annatje Harmans) Other places also show that information. However, as pointed out in "The Garrison- Gerritsen Descendants of Gerrit Jsansen Van Oldenburg alias Gerrit De Mof" from The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 124, January 1993, Number 1, p. 5 and 6 that their daughter Elizabeth could not be this Elizabeth as we know this Elizabeth had a brother Cornelius and a sister Aeltie (shown from Cornelius's will). Gerrit Gerritsen and Neesje did not have children with those names. (GER HIS 001) P. 5-6. (Also Cornelius's names of his children follow the Dutch tradition of naming the first male child after the father of the husband). It also shows Elizabeth is younger as her husband allows for a posthous child. HIS: On September 1, 1732, an agreement was made between Abraham Brouwer of Brooklyn, miller, and Elizabeth Brittaine, widow of Nathaniel, late of Staten Island, wherein it was set forth that they intended to marry, and it was agreed that Brouwer should pay her 200 pounds per year so long as she remained his widow, which should be in lieu of dower. "If she should again marry this allowance is revoked." This document was recorded April 16, 1739. The fact this marriage took place is shown by a deed made by Abraham Brower and Elizabeth, his wife to Peter Hagewout, dated May 1, 1734. (BRI HIS 004, p. 9) HIS: When William married, it is stated that he was a resident of Long Island, and that his mother, Elizabeth Brewer, gives her consent. (STI HIS 021) Stillwell Genealogy, Vol. 1, p. 55.. NOTE: There are different beliefs as to which children are hers. Possibly the first five are from Nathaniel's first wife; perhaps John is the first child she had (named for her father). Elizabeth married (1) Nathaniel Brittain son of Nathaniel Brittain and Ann Stillwell in 1696 in , Richmond, New York. Nathaniel was born21 in 1663 in Staten Island, Richmond, New York. He was christened21 on 14 Jul 1665 in Brooklyn, , New York. He died in 1732 in Staten Island, Richmond, New York. BIR-MAR: Early PA Lineages by Fisher, p. 69 (BRI HIS 003) MAR: Compendium of Am.
