in both is verified by the Civil War Pension Index, see picture of record.

James Enlisted as a Private on 15 September 1861.  Enlisted in Company K,
7th Infantry Regiment New Jersey on 2 Oct 1861.  Received a disability
discharge from Company K, 7th Infantry Regiment New Jersey on 12 Dec 1861
at Lower Potomac, MD.

Then James Enlisted as a Private on 19 September 1864.  Enlisted in Company K,
39th Infantry Regiment New Jersey on 23 Sep 1864.  Mustered Out Company K,
39th Infantry Regiment New Jersey on 17 Jun 1865 at Alexandria, VA.
