Charles died February 17, 1919 Milford, Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 75 years of age. Buried in the Milford Union Cemetery He married Alice Agnes Pursell in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey, October 06, 1866. Alice was born Upper Black Eddy, Bucks Co, PA January 04, 1848. Alice was the daughter of Jacob Pursell and Ann Catharine Shaver. Alice died December 29, 1935 Milford, Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, at 87 years of age. Buried at the Milford Union Cemetery In the 1860 census Frenchtown Alexandria Twp Hunterdon Co NJ page 837, Charles Godown (age 17) is working on the farm of Jonas Robbins. He has a personal estate value of $150. In the 1870 census, Foster Twp. Luzerne Co, PA page 461, Charles (age 27) is listed with his wife Alice A (age 21). His occupation is listed as a farm worker. There is also an Anna S Godown listed and looks like age 2. In the 1880 census Holland Twp Hunterdon Co page 342A, Charles (age 37) is living with his wife Alice (age 37) and 5 children, Annie J (age 13) Charles L (age 11) William H (age 6) Franklin T (age 2) and Nellie (age 4 months). Charles has the occupation of laborer. In the 1885 state census Holland Twp Hunterdon Co NJ page 25, Charles is living with Alice, Charles L, William, Frank, Nellie, and John. In the 1895 NJ State census Holland Twp Hunterdon Co page 50, Charles is living with Alice, Nellie (age 5-20), Johnnie (age 5-20), Noah (age 5-20), and _*Catherine (over 60) Godown. I have no idea who Catherine is. My guess is that she was an aunt. No record of his brothers having married a Catherine. More research is needed.*_ In the 1900 census (page 153A) of Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, Charles (age 57) is living with his wife of 33 years, Alice (age 52) and youngest son Noah (age 14). The census notes that Charles owns his home with no mortgage, he can read and write and was unemployed for 8 months this last year. In the 1910 census Milford, Holland Twp Hunterdon Co page 157B, Charles (age 65) is living with his wife Alice (age 62). They are noted as having been married 44 years with 7 children all still living. His occupation is listed as a farmer, he is an employer, they own the farm and have no mortgage. His obituary as found in the Hunterdon County Democrat on Feb 20, 1919: Charles Godown one of the oldest and most respected citizens of the community, departed this life on Monday morning February 17th, at 10:30 o'clock. For a number of weeks he had been confined to his home with jaundice and his condition did not become serious until a few days before his demise. The deceased will be greatly missed from the community. He was a man of large stature and had a mild pleasing disposition which made him seem like a father to all. He was a man who put great trust in his Master, and although his pathway through life was filled with many discouragements and disappointments, the radiance of his soul shone forth from his beaming face. Our departed friend was born April 4, 1843, making him seventy-five years Ten months and thirteen days old, when breath departed from his earthly frame. He was married in 1866 to Alice Pursell of Upper Black Eddy, Pa. Of the unions seven children were born as follows: Mrs Jennie Smith of Easton, Mrs Nellie Pursell of Upper Black Eddy, Pa, Charles L Godown, Frank Godown, John Godown, Noah Godown and William Godown of this borough all of which are living. The widow also survives to morn his great loss. Funeral services were held in the Peoples Christian Church on Thursday morning February 20, 1919 by the pastor, Rev B. L. Hoagland. The edifice was filled with relatives and friends who came to pay their respect to his memory. Interment was made in the Milford Union Cemetery under direction of Funeral Director Gummer of Frenchtown, NJ. Charles Robins Godown and Alice Agnes Pursell had the following children: i. Alice Jennie Godown was born in Luzene Co, PA November 13, 1867. Annie died May 1, 1955 at 87 years of age. She married William R Smith about 1887. William was born in Pennsylvania 1865. She is listed in the 1870 census as Anna J (age 2) ii. Charles Lemuel Godown was born May 7, 1871. iii. William H Godown was born July 16, 1873. iv. Franklin P Godown was born Milford, Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ July 16, 1877. The group Sheet of Charles R has Frank born July 17 and the SSDI has Frank born July 16. Used the SSDI date Franklin died February 24, 1969 Millville, Cumberland Co, NJ, at 91 years of age. He married Anna Bell Dixon Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ, 1904. Anna was born in Shiloh, Cumberland Co, NJ December 1879. Anna was the daughter of John T Dixon and Mary L unknown. In the 1900 census, Frank (age 22) is living with his brother and family in Cumberland Co, NJ In the 1910 census Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co page 318B, Frank (age 29 obviously not recorded corectly) is living with his wife Anna (age 33). They have been married for 6 years and have had no children. He has an occupation of waterman on an oyster boat. Owns his home and has a mortgage. In the 1920 census Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ page 273B, Frank P (age 42) is living on Maple Avenue with his wife Anna (age 44). Frank has the occupation of Electric Engineer at the Power House. He owns his home and has no mortgage. In the 1930 census Cedarville, Lawrence Twp, Cumberland Co, NJ page 189, Frank P (age 51) is living on Maple Avenue with his wife Anna (age 55). Frank has the occupation of Electric Engineer at the Power House. v. Nellie J Godown was born Milford, Holland Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ February 22, 1880. Nellie died 1964 at 84 years of age. She married Jacob Pursell 1898. Jake was born Upper Black Eddy, Bucks Co, PA March 1878. Jake was the son of Sanford Pursell and Elizabeth Frankenfield. Lived in Upper Black Eddy Pa., vi.
