Obituary: Brown--May 23, 1899, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, of old age, hurried
on by a deep cold which she contracted about four weeks before her death,
but not considered dangerous as she was not confined to her bed more than
usual until the morning she died.

Aunt Betsy Brown, as she was familiarly called by all who knew her, was born
in Virginia on December 13, 1807, of respectable parents, whose name was
Boyd. Her parents moved to Elizabethtown, Cass County, Tennessee, when she
was a child. She professed religion at the age of sixteen years and joined
the Methodist church, which faith she continued until death. Her religion
was seen more in the training of her children than as a church worker. Her
children were taught honesty, industry and obedience. Most of them became
church members by the time they were grown or soon thereafter.

She was married to Samuel Brown of Washington County, Tenn., on the 8th
day of July, 1825. soon after thier marriage they moved to Monroe County,
Tenn., and remained until autumn of 1829, when they moved to Missouri and
stopped for the winter near Lexington. In the spring of 1830 they moved
south and took a government claim near were Columbus, Johnson county,
now stands. They remained there about two years, or until their claim was
entered from under them. From there they moved south again, stopping in
the south part of Johnson county, on the land that made the farm that they
both died on. The last land location was made in April 1832, before the
land had been sectionized by government or Johnson county was located.

They raised a family of fourteen children, except one, who died when quite
young. The rest lived to be grown -- ten boys and three girls-- ten of whom
married and raised families except one, Mrs. Culley, who died shortly after
she was married. Five of the boys and one girl are still living. From the
marriage of the children seventy-four grandchildren was born, sixty of whom
are still living. The number of great and great great grandchildren are
not known. At the funeral of Aunt Betsy there were four generations of her
family, which occurred May 25, at Shilo cemetery. Her funeral discourse was
preached by her grand son by marriage and nephew by blood, Rev. R. A. Brown,
from Luke 10th chapter and 42nd verse.

Thus has lived and died, prehaps, the oldest inhabitant of Chilhowee township,
having lived on one farm for 67 years. Her husband died in 1882, having
lived on the farm 50 years. One son, Barty J. lives in Ufala, Oklahoma;
one, Geo W., in Cass county, Missouri.; one P. H. , at New Rockford, North
Dakota; two L. W. and John C., where she made her home from her husband's
death until she died, three and a half miles northeast of Chilhowee. The
living daughter, Mrs. J. T. Clark lives in Utica, Kansas.
