He was born in 1816, at Ernest Township, Canada West, and died at Camp Point, Illinois in 1865; he married IRENE MARKLE, in January 1838. She was born in 1822; and died in 1859, at Camp Point, Illinois. Both are buried at Camp Point, about twenty miles from Quincy, Adams, Illinois. She was 36 years old at the time of her death. He was 46 years at the time of his death. They lived on a farm near Caledon, in the Salt St. Marie District, Canada West, where their family was born. This farm was 314 miles from St. Mary’s, Ontario, on land bounded on the north by the River Avon and on the east by the River Thames. From here they emigrated to a farm near Camp Point, about 20 miles from Quincy, Illinois, in the spring of 1859. After about a year IRENE MARKLE-LAKE died, while JAMES M. LAKE died about two years later. Both were buried at Camp Point, Illinois. Their children were: ANDREW LAKE, born in December, 1838, near Caledon, Canada West, or Upper Canada, he married NANCY ANN SEWELL, on June 19, 1861, in Euphrasia Province, Gray Co., Ont., by the Rev. G. Bennett, Methodist Episcopal minister. Sometime later, Andrew Lake and family emigrated to Kansas, then frontier country. The frontier life was too hard for Nancy Ann Lake, so she took the children, and with the help of some of Andrew’s sisters went back to Euphrasia, Ontario, in 1873, and had no further contact with her husband. REUBIN LAKE, was born in 1839, at St. Mary’s, Canada West (Ontario). He died on October 2, 1941, at Lake City, Kansas; he married MARY BEALS—She was born in 1847 at Girardeau, Missouri. REUBIN LAKE went from Illinois to western Kansas in May of 1873, to Osage Mission (now St. Paul, Kansas), and settled on what is now the site of Lake City, Kansas, a very small village in Northwestern Barber County. He was engaged in various lines of business, as a brickyard, lumber, hardware, grocery, and such enterprises as would be found in a new country. In the latter 1880’s he went broke, with the rest of the country. With his daughter, IRENE, they made “The Run” into Oklahoma in 1893 and both secured “claims” on which they lived part of the time, until REUBIN LAKE returned to Lake City, to establish a general merchandising store, when the railroad came through in 1907. He continued in this store until his death in 1917. His daughter Irene returned to Lake City, Kansas in 1935, where she still lives. JAMES M LAKE, born 1842, at St. Mary’s, Canada West, or Upper Canada, he married ELIZABETH “Betty Lou” GRAHAM, March 27, 1862, at Downie, Perth, Ontario, Canada ELIZABETH (Betty) LAKE, born February 1, 1844, near Caledon, Upper Canada (Ontario) She married 1st, HERMAN MERS, in June 1864, at Quincy, Adams, Illinois, He died in August 1866. ELIZABETH LAKE-MERS, married 2nd HENRY HEUER, January 21, 1868, at Quincy, Adams, Illinois. He died in 1920. LYDIA LAKE, born January 9, 1846, at Glen Gowen, Upper Canada, she married JOSEPH C. CUMMINGS, in 1861, at Palmyra, Missouri. He died in April 1882, at Areola, Illinois. She died on January 3, 1940, aged 94 years. They came to Areola, Illinois following their marriage in 1861, and this was their home until their death, and here all their children were born. JOHN (called Jack) LAKE, was born on September 21, 1848, at Glenn Gowen, Upper Canada, he married JOSEPHINE TRACEY, September 21, 1875, at Hannibal, Missouri. She was born December 1, 1850, near Quincy, Illinois, and died on February 20, 1953, at Wichita, Kansas, aged 103 years. He died on October 8, 1891, both are buried at Lake City, Kansas. MARY LAKE, was born on June 21, 1850, near St. Mary’s, Upper Canada. She married WILLIAM SCHAPERS, on February 13, 1866, at Quincy, Illinois. She died on January 18, 1941, aged 91 years, at Quincy, Illinois, where all their children were born. This family was all Roman Catholic. They all lived in or near Quincy, Illinois PELEG LAKE born in 1852, near St. Mary’s, Upper Canada (Ontario), He married CLEMENTS ALEXANDER. She died in 1891, at Osage Mission, Kansas. He died in October 1911, at Newton, Kansas. Buried same. FREDERICK PARKER LAKE was born on July 12, 1854, in St. Mary's, Canada West (Ontario), he married IDA CESSNA, in 1876, at Lake City, Kansas. She was born February 22, 1859, at Danville, Illinois. She died in 1915, at Danville, Illinois. He died on September 28, 1925, at Frontenac, Kansas. Fred met Ida when her people came to Kansas, and they became engaged. Then her folks, dissatisfied with the Kansas country, decided to return to Illinois and were planning to leave right away. Fred was away tending cattle, but a friend brought him word that Ida was leaving and had sent word to Fred. She did not want to go back to Illinois, but to be married. The friend had a horse, but Fred was afoot. So they decided to ride and tie, and so get Fred back in time. So one would ride some distance, then tie the horse. The other would walk until he found the tied horse, then would ride awhile, passing the walker, then would tie the horse and walk on, and so by riding and tying, Fred reached his sweetheart in time to be married before her folks started back to Illinois. When they were married Ida said, “Fred, I will never leave you as long as I live,” and she never did. They were scarcely ever apart even overnight. As a very young man Fred was a member of the militia. Some men were detailed to go out and get some buffalo. The one Fred was after led him far afield. The militia were after Indians who were troubling the settlers. When Fred finally got his meat he found his Company was nowhere in sight and night was coming on. He skinned the buffalo, made a fire and cooked some of the meat for his supper. Then it started to snow. He got into a hollow tree but could not rest. So he wrapped himself up in the buffalo hide. In the morning he found himself frozen uptight in the buffalo hide and could not pry himself loose. The cold had shrunk the hide so he was fast. Indians could have scalped him without killing him. But no Indians came that way. At noon his Company found him still frozen in the hide. They built a fire to thaw the hide so as to get him out. Fred Lake was in Dodge City when it was a roaring gambling town. He said dead men were picked up in alleys and streets almost every morning, and it was not safe for a decent woman to venture out at night. The first is a Note Posted to the FamilySearch Profile for James Madison Lake by member contributor A.F. Trusdell, contesting the parent/child association between James Madison Lake and James Lake Jr. Also to comment on is the remark to the reader that the Claude Nelson McMillian Genealogy of the Lake Family should not be applied to research concerning James Madison Lake. I cannot refute the contributors' points - but not in regard to the Genealogy's "ascending and descending" lineages - ONLY the ascending lineage it shows for James Madison Lake should be disregarded. It appears while the author of the book mistook James Madison Lake, with James Madden Lake, or being unable to distinguish critically between the two men, included both in his Lake genealogy. As a result, we cannot be certain as to the parentage of James Madison Lake or his ancestry, however, his children and descending do in fact, reflect the correct family. So, there is much to be grateful for in the composition, although it is an orphaned genealogy amongst the true intended family of the author. The descending genealogy correctly identifies James Madison Lake and Irena Markle's children along with details of their lives that are accurate and should be part of family research into the descendants of James Madison Lake and Irene Markle. Exampled Ancestry/Rootsweb World Connect Project Genealogy that combines the incorrect ascending with the correct descending information NOTE the following history cited in Claud McMillan's "History of My People and Yours" is in error and should not be used as a primary source for the lineage of James Madison Lake. James Madison Lake, born 1814 and James Madden Lake, b. 1823 are two different men. James Madden was born in 1823 to Elizabeth Stover and James Lake in Ernestown, fostered by his aunt, Margaret and continued to live there until he died as a bachelor on 26 Feb 1898 per Ontario, Canada, Deaths and Deaths Overseas, 1869-1947. He is buried in the Switzerville United Church Cemetery. James Madison was born on 14 January 1814 in NY, married Irene Markle in 1836, lived in Trafalgar and Caledon, Peel Co., Ontario, and removed to Adams Co., Illinois where he died on 21 Mar 1863. He is most likely related to Peleg and Jabez Lake, who also lived in Peel Co, Ontario, because of naming patterns within their families but more particularly that Jabez Lake and James Madison Lake are both found living in Columbus, Adams Co., Ill in 1860. No primary sources have yet been found linking the Ernestown Lake family with James Madison, Peleg or Jabez Lake. AF Truesdell 12/2020 Shown just below is an example Ancestry/Rootsweb genealogy that contains both historically accurate and correct information which is paired with information that can neither be confirmed or even implied correct for James Madison Lake, his wife, and their children, respectively. To put it simply: everything the genealogy reports "below" James Madison and Irene Markle, remains correct. However, the balance of evidence - circumstantial and not - simply cannot be interpreted to accurately connect James Madison Lake with anyone in the Family Tree of James Lake, Jr. ROOTSWEB WORLD CONNECT PROJECT STRILING/HASTINGS/McEACHERN/FORD - Roots and Branches of these Families of Ontario Entries: 305973 Updated: 2014-06-08 03:41:32 UTC (Sun) Owner: Elizabeth Archer Index | Individual | Descendancy | Pedigree | Ahnentafel https://wc.rootsweb.com/trees/106206/I062055/irene-markle/registry Descendant Register, Generation No. 1 IRENE MARKLE (ANDREW MARKLE 3, ABRAHAM MARKLE 2, JACOB MARKLE 1) was born in 1822, in Ontario, and died in 1859, at Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois. Shepers, M The Question If as the preponderance of available evidence would seem to suggest, the information shown in the MacMillan Genealogy is incorrect as to the Profiled Subject's ascending lineage, 'why show it at all'? The reason it is included is precisely that others doing their research may encounter this question and it may be helpful to their deliberation as to whether or not to include it and/or contribute to the genealogy question by their findings. My only contribution to the question at hand is that while I cannot comment upon the validity of the ascending line, Historical Record Evidence affirming identities and locations of descendants has proven quite accurate so in turn, my question is how and why the author of the Lake Genealogy was so accurate in his efforts in one direction, yet so misinformed as to his efforts in the other? ______________ JAMES MADISON LAKE is reported to have died on March 21, 1863, at Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois, and he is buried in Earel Cemetery, aka Lake Cemetery, and also known as Ziegler Cemetery, Columbus Township near Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/93914616/james-m-lake Sources "Ontario, District Marriage Registers, 1801-1858," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2C1-LCT9 : 20 February 2019), James McLake, and Isena Markle, 22 Dec 1836; citing Home Township, Algoma, Upper Canada, British Colonial America, Archives of Ontario, Toronto; FHL microfilm 1,030,052.
