From: "Jane" Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 09:50:22 -0500 BEGIN As I mentioned, the Lakes (in Canada) in my database are not in my direct line. So while I happened across information on them, I have made no attempt to pursue it further, or even to verify it. But there certainly were a number of the them in the area where my family resided. I have a Charity Amanda Lake, who married my first cousin three times removed, Adam Huffman Benn. I found this at http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1869883&id=I0048 and the submitter's sources and email address are also there. I have a George Lake, who married my great great grand aunt, Eliza(beth) Shorey. I got this off a posting on genforum http://genforum.genealogy.com/shorey/messages/52.html The Shorey book in question was written by Bobbie Shorey, a lady who lives in Florida. Her email address is beshorey@email.msn.com I have a James P Lake, who married Amy Ann Gordanier (b. cir 1821), a second cousin three times removed, who would never have even made it into my database if she did not also have the distinction of being the great grand aunt of my aunt by marriage. Someone sent me a gedcom, I noticed the unusual name, and got curious to see if I could connect them up. I do have the name of the researcher who gave me this information, but he was researching Gordaniers, not Lakes, and she was an offshoot of his research rather than part of his wife's direct line of descent. I also have a Margaret Lake, who married William Madden, my great great great grand uncle, who was born in 1785. I found some information about her on Ancestry.com, but am not sure how seriously to take it. Supposedly, her parents were married in Ernestown in 1781, but a number of the older children were then born in New York state, although the younger ones show as in Ernestown, which seems rather suspicious to me. I did notice there is also some information on Ancestry about Margaret's brother, James, who appears to have moved to the U.S. around 1833. This made me think of location names. I have never heard of Tobaro, and don't know if it ever existed. But some of the names of other locations have changed. Ernestown no longer appears on a map (most recently it was a township surrounding the town of Bath), but people still use the name in conversation. There is no longer a Camden, but there is a Camden East (go figure). If you do go after further information, keep my email address and feel free to check with me. As you can tell by my finding four Lakes married to relatives with different surnames, I had a lot of relatives in that area. In fact, it is only about 20 miles from where my mother and brother still live. If I don't know where a place was, I probably know someone who knows. Here is a URL for a marriage register for that area from 1788 to early 1813. A number of Lakes appear in it, and you might find it useful. http://www.tbaytel.net/bmartin/langhorn.htm The Napanee museum has a file on the Lake family, as you can see here http://home.fox.nstn.ca/~museum/geneol.html#L and the local United Empire Loyalist branch also has some information http://geocities.com/uelquinte/Ancestors2.html END
