Feb. 5, 1789 being of Native American descent is untrue. There are no facts to support this story. Every once in awhile, I have an inquiry about Elizabeth Sawquill mother of Mary Webb & Mary's grandmother (name unknown in the story) asking if they were Native Americans. The story goes that they were sold at a slave market in Phila, PA to William Webb who took them both home to Newport, NJ where he married Elizabeth Sawquill the young Indian maiden. The facts show Mary Webb's mother was Elizabeth Lore d/o William & Elener Forgison Lore & step-daughter of Jonathan Socwell, Sr. None of these people were Native Americans. The William Webb Family Bible records the wife of William Webb as Elizabeth Sawquill. The name is commonly spelled now as Sockwell but it has also been recorded as Sawquill, Sauquil & Socwell. After the death of William Lore in 1772, Elener Forgison Lore, Mary Webb's grandmother married Jonathan Socwell, Sr. Elizabeth Lore was very young, approximately 4 yrs old in 1772 & certainly not old enough to marry. About 1788, Elizabeth Lore aka Elizabeth Sawquill married William Webb. It appears she associated herself with the surname Sawquill/Sockwell although she was born a Lore. The name Sawquil, Sockwell, etc. is of English origin & not Native American. Sara END
