When John died intestate, Lydia Bowlby, "Widow of the Deceased", renounced administration in favor of John Rhinehart Jr, on Jan 18,1852. This was witnessed by Joseph R. Lake. John Rhinehart was the husband of John Bowlby's daughter Catherine. In the absence of a will the Orphans Court appointed Commissioners, "disinterested persons" namely Augustus G. Rickey, Joseph P. Lake and Sutphin Garrison. This was done on the petition of John Rhinehart Jr. After due process of law "the homestead of John Bowlby situated in the Musconnetcong Valley" was sold to John Rhinehart for $70.00 an acre, he being the highest bidder. Reference to the deed in the County Clerk's office showed that John Rhinehart received the land on 2 April 1853, after the sale on Dec 14, 1852. He paid $3,227.00 for the estate - the amount having been omitted from the record of the sale. (Deed Book 105, pg 606) File No. 0 662. in Surrogate's Office. Detailed record of this division of the property divided between the twelve children is shown in the Commissioners and Judges to the Orphan's Court, made Dec 14,1852. The Deed from the Commissioners to John Rhinehart for the homestead recites the following history. (Bk. 105, p. 508) In referring to the one tract ... "which descended to John Bowlby, in his lifetime from his father Thomas Bowlby's Estate." John Bowlby deceased. late of the Township of Bethlehem, County of hunterdon, in New Jersey." Large, Esquire, one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas of the County of Hunterdon, in the State of New Jersey. Notice is hereby given that an application to me by John Sherman and Aaron Van Syckel, of the said County of Hunterdon, who claim an undivided eleventh part of all those two certain tracts of land lying in the townships of Union and Bethlehem in said County. The first lot being in the township of Union, adjoining lands of Joseph Van Syckel, Lewis Humphrey, George Gano and John Srope, containing six acres of land more or less. The second lot being in the township of Bethlehem, adjoining lands of Ulysses Bowlby, Peter B. Srope, Jacob Dalrymple and others, containing nine acres of land more or less being the same two lots of land whereof John Srope lately died seized, I have nominated Joseph P. Lake, John C. Wene and Peter Rinehart Commissioners to divide the said tracts of land into eleven equal shares or parts; and unless proper objections are stated to me at the House of Geo. F. Crater, in Flemington, on the twentieth day of March next at ten o'clock, A. M., the said Joseph P. Lake, John C. Wene and Peter Rinehart will then be appointed commissioners to make partition of the said lands, pursuant to an act entitled Can act for the more easy partition of lands held by copareners, [sic] join tenants and tenants in common. Ellen Srope the widow of said John Srope, deceased is hereby made a party to these proceedings to the end that such order and decree may be made touching her right of dower in said premises as the circumstances of the case shall require. Given under my hand this seventh day of February eighteen hundred and sixty one. ISAIAH P. LARGE. Feb. 13th, 1861. tf-20. END The Hunterdon Gazette Flemington, Hunterdon Co, NJ 25 Oct 1865 BEGIN CAUCUS- At the Democratic Caucus held in the county on Saturday, it was determined that Jos. P. Lake be the candidate for sheriff. As this is equivalent to an election should Mr. Lake survive the contest- and we see no reason why he shouldn't- he will be a citizen of our village for the next three years. We know nothing of the antecedents of Mr. L. further than the assurance that he is a gentleman of the school of unadulterated Democracy- that he is in every way fully capaciated [sic] for the responsible position to which he is soon to be elected, and that he will make an efficient and energetic public officer. Sheriff [John L.] Jones, who will soon be compelled to vacate the office, has won for himself great credit, and popularity, in the discharge of his duties. END
