from ancestry.com 5 Dec 2021 BEGIN James W. Lake History 1797-c.1865 from PAF records of Annette F. Truesdell Rev. 2017 NAME: Named as father on death certificate of son, John Isaac Lake. BIRTH: Birth date per bible records of John Lake and Sarah Matthews. Date supported by age of James from census records. MARR: Family records name wife as Elizabeth Claus, also spelled Closs. Referred to as "Betsy". CHILDREN: John Isaac, William, Sarah Elisabeth, Daniel Joseph, Henrietta Jane, George, Lucinda Helen, Alexander Wallace. CENSUS: 1830 GOUVERNEUR, ST. LAWRENCE CO. NY census: James W. Lake 0-5 1 male (John Isaac) 30-40 1 male (James) 20-30 1 female (Betsy) b. c1800-1810 CENSUS: 1840 ANTWERP, JEFFERSON CO, NY census James W. Lake 0-5 1 male (Daniel) 5-10 1 male (William) 10-15 1 male (John Isaac) 40-50 1 male (James) 0-5 2 females ( Elizabeth, Henrietta) 30-40 1 female (Betsy) CENSUS: 1850 MACOMB, ST. LAWRENCE CO, NY census James W. Lake, 52, Farmer, NY William, 17, farmer, NY Elisabeth, 14 Daniel, 12 Henrietta, 11 George, 9 Lucinda, 5 Alexander, 3. CENSUS: 1860 MACOMB, ST. LAWRENCE., NY census, pg 32 John Lake, 62, NY (although listed as John, probably enumeration error for James.) Lucinda A., 14, NY Wallace, 12, NY. NOTE: The names of the girls in the above family do not match those listed in McMillan's "Hist of My People and Yours". He probably used middle names. Although John Isaac does not appear in the 1850 census with the family,(nor has he been found in any other NY county during this census) the following death record affirms he is James and Elizabeth's son: Macomb, NY Vital Court Records: (film 1311928, item 9): John I. Lake Death date: 21 Sep 1904, Macomb, NY. Age: 74 Occupation: Mason Birthplace: New York State Father: James Lake (birthplace NY) Mother: Betsy Close (birthplace NY) (named transcribed on death record in error, s/b "Closs".) Cause of death: Diabetes Millitus. NOTE: James found each year on Macomb's Voters List 1846-1851 Election District 2. NOTE: If there was another son, Christopher, as listed in McMillan's "Hist of My People and Yours", he is not found in the 1830/1840/1850 census. No family records indicate that there was a son Christopher. McMillan has many errors so this son will not be included in group record until other evidence of him is found. We can also be assured that Alexander of the 1850 census and Wallace of the 1860 census are the same from a birth record found by the St. Lawrence Hist. Soc. that reads "Alexander W. Lake, b:Macomb 11 Jun 1847, son of James W. and Elizabeth". NOTE: 2 May 1960-letter from Malvina Brown Lake to Flossie Lake Giles "Fran says...his grandfather was all English. His father came from Canada yet was 100% English." NOTE: 5 April 1960-letter from Nettie Lake Bailey to Flossie Lake Giles "Great grandpa Lake or John I. Lake's father was Jim Lake." NOTE: McMillan's assumption that James Lake's father was Henry Lake, b: 1801 is incorrect. Henry Lake (son of James Lake/Hannah Jackson) cited by McMillan was born c1810 per 1860 & 1870 Smith Falls, Ontario census records. NOTE: Family tradition says that James "came" from Canada. This has been interpreted by some to believe that he was actually born in Canada. Census records cited above list New York as James' birthplace. There is a census entry, however, by John Isaac Lake in the 1880 Macomb census, pg14 that records his father James' birthplace as Vermont. This would make sense since the Lake property in NY was located in the area of Albany/Washington county that was claimed by both NY and VT. My assumption that James' father is John Lake, son of Thomas Lake of Wolford is based on James' age from census reports matching birth date in John Lake bible; names of his children being same as names in John Lake/Thomas Lake family; living in the same locale in St. Lawrence and Jefferson Co., NY as John Lake; family oral history that James came from Canada, and the elimination of other individuals. NOTE: Voters in Macomb 1841-1857, list contains the names of Macomb men who voted in eleven elections from 1841 to 1857. James W. Lake voted in 6 elections from 3 Nov 1846 to 27 May 1851 aftruesdell originally shared this 4 years ago story END from ancestry.com ... BEGIN William H. Lake, b. 23 Aug 1832 PAF notes of Annette F. The family of a Jacob Phillips is also found in Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY. This is probably where Fanny and Riley married. NOTE: death record of Fanny Lake, 5 May 1890 found in Taylor Co., WI death records, NOTE: 24 Mar 2007 query posted to Rootsweb by Carolyn Glidden: "James W. Lake b. abt 1798- found enumerated in the 1840 (Town of Rossie)--1850 (Town of Macomb) census for Saint Lawrence County. He had a fairly large family with several sons having Civil War service. I would like to know if anyone is researching his descendents and if they have run across a reference to his son William(b.1832/1833 in St. Lawrence Co.). It may be an item in one of the sons Civil War pension files or perhaps an obituary. Anything that would refer to William being in Wisconsin or going west. I suspect that my William H. Lake b. 23 August 1832 at Morristown, St. Lawrence Co. is the correct son of James W. Lake. This William, is found with a Declaration for Invalid Pension January 18, 1898 residing in the Town of Macomb. His 1908 Wisconsin death certificate didn't contain the name of his parents and his obituary only stated that he was survived by one brother in New York."
