BEGIN From: "Annette Truesdell" To: "Tom Davies & Kathleen Lake" Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2017 14:25:10 -0800 Your James Madison Lake is a different person from James Madden Lake, son of James Lake and Elizabeth Stover. As you have found, there is a LOT of confusion and mis-information regarding these two men. Your James Madison is not the son of James Lake and Elizabeth Stover. Elizabeth Stover Lake died about 1820/23. Prior to her death, she was the mother of Julia (July Ann), b 20 May 1817, Lawrence, b. 22 Sep 1818, and James b. c1820-23. After the death of Elizabeth, their father, James, let his sister Margaret Lake Madden and her husband William Madden raise Julia and her baby brother James. James was given the middle name of Madden by this couple. Margaret had no children of her own. Julia and James were still with Margaret Madden, (widow) when their half brother, George visited them in 1871 in Canada. Neither of them married. Your James Madison is a puzzle. I think it's possible that he may be related to the Peleg Lake (married to Dorothy Franks) and Jabez Lake (married to Sally Franks) who also lived in Canada in the proximity of your James Madison prior to them removing to Minnesota and Adams County, Illinois. From my notes: Peleg Lake BIRTH: 12 Apr 1798 New York. MARR: Dorothy Franks, dau of William Franks, UEL. NOTE: OC 29 Jan 1826. "Dorothy Lake, wife of Peleg Lake of Williamsburg, County Dundas Eastern District...daughter of William Frank of Williamsburg UEL". Sworn 29 Jan 1826. NOTE: 19 Nov 1833, Sally Lake petitions for a land as the daughter of a UEL. She is also a daughter of William Frank of the Township of Caledon "in the Home District formerly of the Township of Williamsburgh in the Eastern District, a private soldier in the 1st Battalion of the Royal Regiment of New York and now in the 69th year of his age. That the Petitioner is in the 23rd year of her age and is married to Jabez Lake of the Township of Caledon". Sworn 28 Nov 1833. CENSUS: Chinguacousky County 1851 Cananda West Census, Peel County Peleg Lake-54 Dorothy-42, John-24, Mary-22, Margaret-17, Susan-15, William-12, Gordon-11, Ellen-6 DEATH: 27 Mar 1876 Mower Co., MN. Will dated 23 Mar 1876. NOTE: How and when these LAKEs joined the Franks in Canada is unknown. How the Canadian Peleg and Jabez are related is unknown other than their wives being sisters. In looking at other early census US records, there is a Peleg Lake and a Reuben Lake found in the 1800 Ulster, NY census. There was also a Peleg Lake who was a son of Thomas Lake in Dutchess Co. Thomas' wd 19 Dec 1783; wp 14 Feb 1784, "Thomas Leake, of Little 9 Partners, Dutchess Co. Wife Lidia, daus Sarah, Mary and Lydia; sons Stephen, David, Peleg, Daniel and Abraham; grandson Benj, son of son Isaac. Executors the wife a nd son Daniel. Wit. George Huddleston, Samuel Dean, Jr and Lydia Leake, spinster." Unknown if the Dutchess Peleg and the Ulster Peleg are the same individual. Jabez Lake BIRTH: c1812 New York NAME: email query 27 Sep 1997 to NEWYORK-ROOTS-L from Shawnee Ramey; shawnee@directcon.net. MARR: name of 1st wife unknown (per ROOTS-L posting. 1st wife was Sally Franks per her UEL petition.) Children born in Canada were Samuel, b.1833; Margaret, b. 1836. A son, Lewis, b. 1844 in Illinois. MARR: 2nd) Charlotte Briscoe 2 May 1850 Adams Co., IL. Children were Muria, b. 1851; Maretta, b. 1853, d. 1892; Douglas, b. 1854; Stephen A., b. 1855; Mary, b. 1858; James, b. 1863; Jabez, Jr., b. 1866; Martha, b. 1868, d. 1900; Charles W., b. 1873. It's just a guess whether the Illinois and Canadian bunch were related to the Dutchess or Ulster ones. The Adams County destination of Jabez Lake bears investigation. Also, some online family trees name Jabez' son, James as "James Madison". This also gives weight to the assumption that there may be some familial relationship between your James Madison Lake with Jabez and Peleg. A Y-DNA test from a male LAKE relative would be very helpful in placing your LAKE line in the correct family. The early LAKE immigrants to New York, Rhode Island, CT and Massachusetts do not share DNA results and do not appear to have common ancestry so you may or may not descend from the Gravesend Lakes. Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2018 10:55:19 -0700 From: Tom Davies & Kathleen Lake Yes I have had a nice conversation and several emails with Annette Truesdell. Annette was the person that helped me to completely understand that we are not (most likely) related to the Gravesend Lake's but most likely to the Peleg Lake's. I am not familiar with the two branches of Peleg Lake. New Jersey and New England.  I would be interested in knowing about them as perhaps I could make a connection and perhaps determine the parents of these two James Madison Lake. Irene Markel's family came from Pennsylvania to Ontario. Would you consider that New England? My line goes like this.  James Madison Lake (Born in Ontario Canada and died in Illinois) married to June Merica (no information on her) James Madison Lake and Irene Markle (parents from Pennsylvania) James Lake (born in Ontario) and Elizabeth Graham  John Graham Lake (Born in Ontario) and Jennie Wallace Stephens John Graham Lake (born in Illinois) and Vera Lake Eleanor Lake (my mother) END
