John Hagerman s/o Christopher By genealogy.com user September 20, 2010 at 03:38:34 Re the James Lake of Sidney Twp, Hastings County as a brother of John Lake in a petition of 28 Feb 1850. I believe that he is probably the James Lake born 1812 that married Eliza Ann Deen, born 1810 to Isaac and Caty Deen ( my gggg grandparents). James Lake born 1812 was deceased by 1856 and is buried in Longwell Cemetery in Hastings County. James Lake and Eliza Ann Deen/Dean had a number of children. Eliza Ann Dean Lake never remarried after the death of her husband James Lake. A baptism for Elizeran Deen in Early Methodist Baptisms of Smith Creek Circuitconfirmed Eliza Ann Deen's birth as well as that of my ggg grandfather Adam Acker Deen who was baptized along with his sister. Re: HANNAH LAKE md. John Hagerman s/o Christopher By Annette Truesdell September 20, 2010 at 05:34:04 The following is the information I have regarding James Lake, son of Nicholas Lake and Rhody Broadwell: BIRTH:In 1797 UEL petition of his father Nicholas Lake, he is referred to as "the youngest being three years old". This could not refer to Richard who was the eldest son, nor John who petitioned in 1810. James' petition is dated "Sydney, 28th Jan 1818" and states he "has attained the age of 21 years" which is consistent with a birth year as early as 1793. NOTE:James makes a petition 28 Feb 1850 for compensation for a grant of 200 acres that was by right his aunt Mary Lake Parrott's, who had died in 1819. Mary's husband, James Parrott, leaves the right to this claim of 200 acres of Lot 27, 1st Conc in Otanabee, to Mary's nephews John and James Lake, sons of her brother Nicholas. See notes of Mary Lake Parrott. MARR:pg 243 of McMillan's "Hist of Your People and Mine" says his wife was Eliza Ann Dean, b. 8 May 1810 Hastings Co., Ontario; d. 28 Feb 1899. However, per Hagerman family researchers, this is thought to be in error and this James' wife was Elizabeth Hagerman per family records of Everett Lake. DEATH:assume the Ontario Death Record for James Lake, d 18 Feb 1871, 78y11m15d, farmer, Sidney, informant Clarissa Fox, to be this James Lake. My records show that James Lake, b. 15 Oct 1812 who married Eliza Ann Dean was the son of John Lake and Elizabeth Sharrard. This James Lake is named as heir at law of the late John Lake and sold 68 acres of Lot 37, Conc 5 Sidney Twp , SW part, to his brothers, William and Nicholas Lake Q346, Bill of Sale, 22 Feb 1836 Reg 29 Aug 1845. 15 Jan 1850 - William Lake and wife convey back to James Lake above parcel. Will book A 282, 17 May 1854, Reg 17 Mar 1858, James Lake to his wife Eliza Ann during her widowhood and Charles Wesley Lake afterwards, all his estate. The same property Lot 37, Conc 5 was sold 9 Oct 1865 by Eliza Ann Lake 68 acres of SW part to a Georgina Stewart for $150.00. Re: HANNAH LAKE md. John Hagerman s/o Christopher By genealogy.com user September 20, 2010 at 07:41:03 Thank you for the detailed info. I have not seen those land transaction records. I have the death date as 21 March 1856 for James Lake born 1812. At one time, Brian Lake posted pictures of the headstones of Eliza Ann and James Lake that are buried in Longwell Cemetery. By the 1861 census, Eliza Ann Dean Lake was already widowed as per census records. Re Elizabeth ( Betsy ) Lake, daughter of Nicholas Lake and Rhoady Broadwell By genealogy.com user September 18, 2011 at 06:29:08 It has been suggested that this Elizabeth Lake married Richard Smith born around 1760 who first lived on Conc 5 Lot 1 of Thurlow Twp in Hastings County by 30 June 1789. By 3 June 1812, Richard Smith and his wife Elizabeth moved to Conc 5 Lot 12 Sidney Twp after purchasing the full 200 acres of this property from William Ketcheson Sr. During the same time frame that Richard Smith lived in Thurlow, a James Martin also lived there on Conc 5 Lot 8. According to his Upper Canada Land Petition of 1798, James Martin did an Oath of Allegiance and stated that he had lived in the province since 1790. It is difficult to exactly interpret his age on the Petition but it is either 24 or 21. If he was 21, then his year of birth was about 1777 so he would only have been about 12 years of age coming to Ontario. His place of birth and parents are still unknown. From a recent discovery at the Belleville Land Records Office by Nora Kearney of Belleville, James Martin sold property to a Phillip Hotts? on 2 Feb 1835 and this was witnessed by Malcolm McPherson , millwright of Thurlow, and his wife Margaret. MAHETABLE MARTIN WIFE OF JAMES MARTIN APPEARS TO HAVE RELEASED HER DOWER---to the above described presents before Anthony Marshall. This was finally witnessed by Anthony Marshall and C-- Ketcheson Jr Esq two of his majesty's Justice of the Peace for the Midland District ( Hastings County Ontario )on 5 Oct 1840. Hittabold Smith Martin, daughter of Richard Smith United Empire Loyalist applied for her Upper Canada Land Petition in 1840 while living in Tyendinaga Twp and I saw the document which showed her married and then widowed by the completion of the Petition. Hittabold Smith, daughter of Richard Martin of Thurlow and then Sidney Twp, had the full name of Mahetable as per the document of her husband James Martin born 1777 and Mehetable was much younger having been born around 1797. At this time, the children of James Martin and his wife Mahetable Smith are not known. James Martin's property was at the site of the former Corbyville Distillery and close to Latta Mills in Thurlow. My gg grandfather Francis Smith Martin born 1819 was born in Latta Mills according to a death record of his daughter Maria Jane Martin that married Mathew McLean. A will of James Martin if it exists would clarify his children. END
