Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2018 10:23:50 -0500 From: Clifton Wingard BEGIN Family lore is what I am going on right now.  I was told by my grandmother that the grave of D. T. Lake was indeed Daniel Thatcher Lake, son of Jacob Lake.  My grandmother's middle name was Debow (she hated it and never used it).  I don't know where his wife is buried. END Date: Tue, 12 May 2020 14:30:44 -0700 From: Leslie Lewis BEGIN Just making a list for clarity. Evidence that D. T. Lake (1789-1869) is the son of Rev. Jacob Lake: Jacob proclaimed in his will (dated 1817) that his eldest son was Daniel T Lake. Jacob's wife's name was Mary Debow, and they named a son Allen Debow Lake. D.T. Lake also named a son Allen Debow Lake after his brother. Lucy Debow Lake claims the grave of D.T. Lake is her great-grandfather. Jacob's will is on file in Smith County, Tennessee. Daniel T. Lake resided in Smith County, TN in 1820, 1830 and 1840, after which he moved to Tipton County TN and appeared in census records in 1850 and 1860. D. T. Lake is buried in Tipton County, TN. Daniel Lake 1771 resided in Buncombe County, NC in 1800, 1810 and 1820. His will is dated 1824 and filed in Ralls County, Missouri. This Daniel names four of his children in his will: Thomas, Enoch, Alanson and Daniel. Others in his family had removed with him to Ralls County, MO and then on to Marion County, Missouri, where many lived for several years. I am still working on these lines (it never stops, but then, that's part of the fun), including fleshing out all the families of the children listed in the wills, where they can be found. END from Craig Kanalley ... BEGIN Craig Kanalley : Dec 10 07:27PM -0500 An important update - Dannie Lake is such an uncommon name that I wanted to give this another go. I believe I have confirmed Dannie Lake's lineage back to our John Lake born abt. 1625 who settled in Gravesend. *1. John Lake born abt 1625 England, married Ann Spicer* *2. John Lake born 1654 Gravesend (NY), married Neeltje Claeszen* *3. Thomas Lake born about 1680 Gravesend (NY), married Jannetje Stryker* *4. Dannie Jo Lake Jr. born 1986/1987 Texas * It is not clear if Dannie Lake who took the DNA test is Dannie Jo Lake Sr. or Dannie Jo Lake Jr., but I am confident he is one of them. Both Dannie Lakes are from the Amarillo, Texas area, not far from Oklahoma. Given the number of generations involved here, I am not surprised he gets his own Big Y branch. The "split" for the Loyalist Canada Lakes with these Lakes of Texas would be all the way back to John Lake & Neeltje Claeszen (common ancestors), with the Texas branch descended of Thomas Lake who married Jannetje Stryker and the Loyalist Ontario Lakes descended of his brother Nicholas Lake born abt1692 who married Mary Janszen/Johnson. I have discovered relationships between Jacob Lake and Joel Rice descendants (who are both named in John Debow's will) that I believe are significant and I wanted to share what I have found and see what you think.  I have tried to summarize below. Bill THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE JACOB LAKE AND THOMAS RICE FAMILIES * JOHN DEBOW (1745-1783) WAS MARRIED TO LUCY “LINEY” RICE (1760-1820) * JACOB LAKE (1747-1818) WAS MARRIED TO JOHN DEBOW’S SISTER (MARY DEBOW, 1750-1795) * JACOB LAKE WAS EXECUTOR FOR JOHN DEBOW’S WILL AND GUARDIAN FOR HIS SONS * LUCY RICE’S BROTHER JOEL RICE (1762-1833) WAS A WITNESS TO JOHN DEBOW’S WILL. LUCY AND JOEL RICE ARE CHILDREN OF THOMAS RICE (1728-1804) THE ABOVE FACTS ESTABLISH THE LINK BETWEEN THE LAKE, DEBOW AND RICE FAMILY LINES HYPOTHESIS: THE DANIEL LAKE (1774-1824) WHO MOVED FROM BUNCOMBE, NC TO MARION COUNTY MISSOURI ABOUT 1820 WAS A SON OF JACOB LAKE * THE JOEL RICE AND SISTER LUCY “LINEY” RICE FROM ABOVE ARE BOTH CHILDREN OF THOMAS E. RICE (1728-1804) * ANOTHER SIBLING IS ELISHA RICE (1759-1806) * ELISHA RICE HAD A SON JOHN RICE (1791-1861) WHO WAS JOEL’S NEPHEW * THIS JOHN RICE HAD A DAUGHTER NANCY DRUCILLA RICE (1822-1862) WHO MARRIED DANIEL JEFFERSON LAKE (1825-1897) * NANCY DRUCILLA RICE IS A GRANDNIECE OF JOEL RICE * THIS DANIEL JEFFERSON LAKE IS A GRANDSON OF DANIEL LAKE AND WOULD BE A GREAT GRANDSON OF JACOB LAKE’S * DANIEL LAKE HAD A GRAND DAUGHTER AMANDA E. LAKE ( 1823-1887) WHO MARRIED ALEXANDER COLLIER RICE (1822-1910) WHO IS A GRAND NEPHEW OF JOEL RICE * THESE INTER-MARRIAGES BETWEEN THE LAKE FAMILY AND THE RICE FAMILY TOOK PLACE IN MISSOURI WHERE BOTH THE LAKE AND RICE LINES HAD MIGRATED FROM NORTH CAROLINA AND OCCURRED WITHIN TWO GENERATIONS OF THE ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN JACOB LAKE, JOEL RICE AND THE JOHN DEBOW FAMILIES * I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND A SINGLE DOCUMENT SHOWING A LAKE FAMILY OTHER THAN JACOB LAKE’S IN NORTH CAROLINA DURING THE RELEVANT TIME PERIOD I BELIEVE THAT THESE ESTABLISHED RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE LAKE AND RICE FAMILIES PROVIDE AT LEAST CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE THAT THE DANIEL LAKE OF INTEREST WAS A SON OF JACOB LAKE AND MARY DEBOW. Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2021 10:00:40 -0400 1) I don't have any reason at all to doubt that Clifton Wingard descends from Daniel Thatcher Lake nor that the family has possession of Jacob Lake's bible.  After all, Daniel Thatcher Lake was the executor of Jacob's estate and would likely have had the family bible.  I also am convinced that Jacob Lake named his son Daniel Thatcher Lake after his friend Daniel Thatcher who is named right after Jacob in the 1888 "Sketches of North-Carolina Minutes of the Synods of the Carolinas from 1783-1801".  It would be interesting to know what the relationship between Jacob and Daniel Thatcher was that would cause Jacob to name a son after Daniel Thatcher but that I guess we will never know.  It must have been a powerful reason.  As far as the family bible goes, what would be interesting would be to know if an earlier Daniel Lake is listed as a son.  Bottom line, for my purposes it doesn't matter that Clifton Wingard descends from Daniel Thatcher Lake.  That doesn't say or prove one way or another that there wasn't an earlier son named Daniel. 2) I have again reviewed the Jack Lake Revare pages that you sent.  There is no evidence of anything in those pages.  Nothing but speculation.  First of all, no evidence that Daniel was ever in Virginia.  Now it has to be admitted that I have no evidence that he wasn't in Virginia, however, he could also have been in born in Orange, NC to Jacob and Mary and there would have been no record, just as there was no record of any other birth of their children except for Lucy "Liney" Lake listed as an heir in John Debow's will.  Jack Lake Revare quotes from a short history, presumably by George S. Lake, in 1895 "Portrait and Record of Marion, Ralls and Pike Counties, Missouri" that says that Daniel was from Virginia and son Burgess was born in Virginia.  Opposed to this is an autobiographical article published by Gorge A. Lake (cousin to George S. Lake) in the "Valdalia Leader" (see my tree for a transcription) newspaper that says that Burgess and wife Sarah Shuford Lake were both born and raised in North Carolina.  The Find A Grave citations for Burgess and Sarah also say birth in North Carolina.  Probably most convincing, the 1880 Census records for six of Burgess Lake's adult children say that their mother and father were both born in North Carolina.  Even George S. Lake says North Carolina in the 1880 Census, but then in the 1900 Census when he was 78 yrs old said Virginia.  All of the other children in the 1900 Census say Burgess and Sarah were born in North Carolina except Laban where it says he and his parents were born in Kentucky.  He was certainly born in Missouri and not Kentucky.  I bet this is the Census taker run wild.  No one but the George S. Lake citation says Virginia so I go with North Carolina.  I see no Virginia connection for Daniel or Burgess anywhere.  The musing about a Joseph Lake are irrelevant since no data is presented. 3) I don't know a thing about the Thomas or Timothy or Johannah Lake that you mention as they have never come up on any record connected with Jacob that I have run across. I still think that the documented interconnections between the Joel Rice, John Debow and Jacob Lake familes in Orange, NC and the subsequent inter-marriages between the descendants Joel Rice and Daniel Lake of North Carolina within two generations from Jacob Lake is the most concrete evidence yet that Daniel Lake of NC had to be directly connected to the Jacob Lake line. On Sat, Apr 24, 2021 at 10:21 PM Marshall Lake wrote: Hi Bill, You make a good summary for Daniel of Missouri being the son of Rev Jacob LAKE.  And you have done more research concerning this than I have. However, there are two things I can't get past ... 1.  Rev Jacob LAKE's bible being in the possession of the family of Clifton Wingard who have shown their lineage from Daniel T LAKE buried in Tennessee.  By the way, the last time I wrote to Clifton I asked if his cousin could take images of the pertinent bible pages and send the images via text/email.  I never heard back from Clifton.  I wrote him back in January.  Hopefully I didn't push Clifton too hard and I'll hear from him in the future. 2.  Jack Lake Revare, who spent a lot of time researching his LAKE line and wrote a book about it (I believe I've sent you some pages from the book in the past), traced his LAKE line to Daniel LAKE (b 1771 in VA, d 1827 Ralls Co, MO).  Jack says Daniel LAKE went directly from VA to MO and was never in NC (which would account for you not finding any NC records for another LAKE family), and is NOT a son of Rev Jacob LAKE. Personally, I believe this Daniel LAKE may be connected to Thomas LAKE and/or Timothy LAKE, brothers who show up in Loudoun Co, VA by 1767. Thomas and Timothy were sons of Daniel LAKE (c1700 Staten Isl - 1775 Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ).  Thomas went to SC from VA.  Timothy may have went to OH. I see another LAKE family which may be connected.  Johannah LAKE (1714 Middlesex Co, NJ - 1795 Washington Co, TN) married Daniel BAYLES (1716 Hunterdon Co, NJ - 1800 Washington Co, TN).  The family moved from Middlesex Co, NJ to Cecil Co, MD c1760.  They moved to Loudoun Co, VA c1765.  And finally they moved to Washington Co, TN c1780.  Johannah was a daughter of John LAKE (1688 Kings Co, NY - 1753 Middlesex Co, NJ) and Martinah ------ (b c1690 Long Island).  The other children of John LAKE & Martinah ------ seemed to have stayed in Middlesex Co, NJ. BEGIN Daniel T Lake VA-MO wife Mary Turpin: son William J Lake b 1833 MO By Cameron heath May 21, 2007 at 04:00:53 Anyone recognize WILLIAM LAKE born Marion Co MO 1833 ? In a later census there is an Elizabeth Lake, age 23 living in this household. She may have been the bride of William Lake, or a daughter? WILLIAM R. HEATH (b. 28 April 1801 d. 29 Aug 1883), m 1. 6 April 1818 Nancy SANFORD, m 2. Mary P. TURPIN. (b. 25 Dec 1813 d. 10 June 1896). He was born in Berkeley Co. VA, and moved along with his parents to Cabell Co. VA by 1809 and married his first wife, Nancy Sanford, in Cabell Co. VA. in 1818. It is not known when Nancy Sanford died, but I am going to assume it was with the birth of their child Nelson Heath in Cabell County, for there is a wide gap between this child and subsequent children who begin again in 1838, believed to be those of his 2nd wife. This would match closely with her divorce in Marion Co. MO. William’s 2nd wife was Mary TURPIN who had first married on 18 Aug 1831 in Marion Co. MO. Daniel T. LAKE b. 1774 VA. She was Daniel Lake’s 2nd wife and this marriage ended in divorce. There was one child born to Mary Turpin and Daniel Lake: William J. Lake born 30 Aug 1833. Firstborn son Nelson Heath married in 1839 in Cabell Co. WV Sarah Porter, from a well-known family in this county. He stayed behind when his father William R Heath moved on to MO. William Richard Heath moved, along with the Heath and McComas extended families, to MO. 1839-1840 but did not settle in the same county as the others. He alone of the Heath children did not ‘group’ with the others, but settled in Howard County, quite distant from the rest. The closest to him was the group of his brothers living in Benton County and that was Stephen Preston Heath, Jonas B. Heath, and Richard Blue Heath. Benton County is two counties away from Howard County. William Richard Heath, his second wife Mary, and family lived in New Franklin Town, Franklin Twp., Howard Co. MO. where he was a lawyer and county judge, and in his very latest years, a notary public. William R Heath died 29 August 1883 and is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, north of New Franklin, Franklin Twp, Howard Co. MO. along with his wife Mary and many other family members. Daniel LAKE, b. 1771, d. 1827, Ralls Co., MO By Jack Revare June 03, 2005 at 08:53:35 Daniel LAKE is enumerated on the 1800 Buncombe Co., NC Census with four sons. These were: Burgess, Ballard, Enoch and Charles. He is listed in the Morgan District. There is a Daniel Lake enumerated in the 1790 Union Co., SC Census. This is close to Buncombe Co., NC and could be the same Daniel. In Laurens and Union Counties, SC, there are some BURGESS families. It is my theory Daniel's wife, Elizabeth, was a Burgess. Thier first son was named Burgess. Daniel Lake is mentioned in a George S. Lake biography (P&BR Marion Ralls & Pike Cos. 1895). It lists him as moving to NC at an early age. It states he is the grandfather of George and the father of Burgess Lake. Other children of Daniel were listed: Ballard, Enoch, Charles, Levina, Thomas, Lawson, Daniel and Nancy. Daniel Lake's will was filed 19 Jul 1824 in Ralls Co., MO. He left everything to his wife, Elizabeth. Daniel was thought to be the son of Rev. Jacob Lake of NC & Smith Co., TN. He has been confused with another Daniel who eventually moved to TX. I would like to hear from anyone researching this line. Daniel LAKE of Buncombe Co., NC By Jack Revare March 24, 2003 at 06:11:11 I am attempting to find the ancestors of one Daniel LAKE, supposedly b. ca 1774, VA. He m. Elizabeth, LNU, but surname could be BURGESS. Daniel shows up on the 1800 Buncombe Co., NC Census with four sons. He later moved to Marion Co., MO. This Daniel was originally thought to be a son of Rev. Jacob Lake of Orange Co., NC. Research has proven this to be wrong. Re: Daniel LAKE of Buncombe Co., NC By William Lake April 12, 2003 at 08:39:18 According to research done by my Uncle Paul J. Lake in 1980, our family is decended from James Lake belived to be the son of Daniel and Elizibeth Lake who were killed by lightning in 1815. James and a younger sister were raised by a neighbor Richard Hill. Paul though that Daniel was the son of a Richard or Jacob Lake who briefly lived in Orange county N.C. Jesse Lake's - Ralls & Marion Co.'s MO By Patricia Combs July 27, 2002 at 06:46:25 I am looking for information on my ggggrandparents, Thomas Lake who married Barbara ("Barbary") Whaley in Ralls County MO in 1825. Barbara's parents were thought to be James Whaley & Ellenor "Nellie" Brown. LDS & WFT shows Daniel Lake as my Thomas' father & his mother as "Elizabeth", but I have not found a definitive link yet. I have found several other Lake's (Burgess, Ballard, Enoch, Ezra, etc.) in Ralls & Marion County MO (history books & census records, various lists, etc.). Would like to know more about the supposed connection to Daniel Lake & Rev. Jacob Lake from Buncombe & Orange NC, and Hunterdon NJ? Would also like to know anything about the Whaley line. Happy to share what I have, always happy to receive info too! Thanks for any help! Re: Lake's - Ralls & Marion Co.'s MO By Jack Revare September 24, 2003 at 04:28:13 I just finished writing a family history book that includes a chapter on the Daniel LAKE family of Ralls Co., MO. This Daniel is definitely not a son of Jacob. His son was a Daniel T. Lake who moved from Smith Co., TN to Texas. So the connection to Hunterdon Co., NJ is not correct. I am researching Daniel to see if I can find his parents. Daniel was in Buncombe Co., NC before moving to MO. There is a Daniel Lake on the 1790 SC Census in Union Co. This is not far from Buncombe Co., NC. Re: Lake's - Ralls & Marion Co.'s MO By Patricia Combs September 24, 2003 at 06:51:47 I am glad to hear from you again, and also to know that my Lake line is not from Hunterdon NJ area Lake's. That either makes it much easier or much more difficult!! Do you know how/if my Thomas Lake is related to Daniel T. Lake? All I know is that he and "Barbary" (Barbara) Whaley married on 01DEC1825 in Ralls County MO. My gggrandma was their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Lake. I do have her date of death and that she is buried in the Walnut Shade Cemetery, in Walnut Shade, MO. I have been to the cemetery, but found no stone for her (she died in 1873). Do you have anything else on my line (I have the exact dates too)? I have a page from the old History of Marion Co. MO book that shows a Thomas Lake was noted as 1826 then "here previously" (the only entry with that notation on that page) listed off to the side of him. I have done some research at the Mid-Continent Genealogy Library here in Independence. Are you making copies of your book available for purchase? Thank you for any and all help Jack, and very happy to hear that your book is published!Take care and as always, I am happy to share what I have too. END
