Sue Broadbooks : Jun 02 2024 BEGIN My grandfather, Louis Raymond, was an Orphan Train rider from New York to Iowa around 1901. Through DNA we discovered that his mother was Margaret Raymond of Cobourg, Ontario. Louis's father is a Lake. My sister is writing a historical fiction book based on the life on Louis, as told through the women in his life. She's the writer, and I'm the researcher. We will be in Cobourg next week to do research. We aren't sure which Lake man is the biological father of our grandfather. We have DNA connections to two brothers, John G. Lake (b. 1848) and James Edward Lake (b. 1845) born in Erie County, NY. Their father was Henry W. Lake, a blacksmith, who was born in Dutchess or Rensselear County, NY in 1815. The Henry W. Lake family spent some years in Wisconsin, then returned to Wayne County, NY. The father of Henry W. was Henry A. Lake, born 1769 in Hoosick, Albany Co, NY. The father of Henry A. was Abraham Lake, born 1741 in Middlesex, NJ. He was a sergeant in the Rev. War. Three of his sons (brothers of our Abraham), Nicholas, John, and Thomas, went to Canada and settled in Ernestown. Margaret Raymond relinquished her son, Louis Raymond, to the New York Foundling Hospital when he was about 3 months old. The birth certificate claims that his father was George B. Sutton, but we know by DNA that George is not the biological father of Louis. About a year later, Margaret married George, who went on to become a world-famous (really!) billiards pro. They lived in New York, Toronto, Paris, and eventually Chicago. We have a lot of questions about Margaret, and we hope to find some clues during our research. We hope to also do some research on our Lake loyalists. END Sue Broadbooks : Jun 02 2024 BEGIN Margaret's father was Manley Raymond. He is connected to the Raymond line of early New England: https://www.google.com/books/edition/Genealogies_of_the_Raymond_Families_of_N/ARQUAAAAYAAJ [www.google.com]   Margaret's mother was Matilda Ryan. Records show she was born in Ireland and came over when she was 7. We haven't found her on any passenger lists, and the only family we find for her in Canada is her sister when they lived in Port Hope together. END
