END From a Montrose-area newspaper in March of 1917: BEGIN Friendsville - The general store, conducted by William T. Moran and C. J. Lake, was totally destroyed by fire, about midnight, on Friday, Feb. 23. Although the fire was discovered before it had gained great headway and a general alarm sent out, to which scores of men responded promptly, the flames spread so rapidly that nothing could be done. The entire stock as well as the building, was consumed. The building, which was part of the Robert Winters estate and owned by Rev. P. C. Winters, of Scranton, is believed to have been uninsured. A member of the army, Lake brought ammunition to the front with other soldiers. They were ambushed by the enemy on their return and killed. Lake, 87, of Binghamton passed away peacefully Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Rivermede Health Care Center. He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (Wasileski) Lake; his parents, Cleveland and Claire (Reynolds) Lake; his brother, John; sister and brothers-in-law, Betty and Frank Facik, Joan Burke and Rob Maloney. M. yesterday in St. Thomas Aquinas' Church, Miss Joan Claire Lake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland J. Lake of 24 Rotary Avenue, became the bride of Edward Thomas Burke of 2210 East Main Street, Endicott. The Rev. Leo J. Crowley performed the double-ring ceremony before an altar decorated with white chrysanthemums and magnolia leaves. The bride, who was given in marriage by her brother, Joseph A. Lake, was attired in a period gown of imported Italian satin. The long sleeved basque was fashioned with a yoke and panci of point D'm Venice lace. Her full skirt terminated in a cathedral train. A triple-tiered veil of tuile fell from a tiara of pearlized orange blossoms. She carried a cascade bouquet of white roses and stephanotis. Miss Nancy Lake, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Bridesmaid was Miss Mary Jane Arend. Miss Michelle Maloney, niece of the bride, was junior bridesmaid and Clairanne [sic] Facik, niece of the bride, was flower girl. The bride's attendants were gowned alike in bouffant frocks of American beauty velvet and wore matching half hats with matching veils. Their cascade bouquets were of pink and white pompons. Mr. Burke asked his brother, Ambrose Burke, to be best man. Guests were seated by Patrick Lake and Joseph Lake, brothers of the bride, Daniel Tallott [sic] and James Thayne, cousins of the bridegroom. Martin McGavin, nephew of the bridegroom, was ring bearer. A wedding breakfast for members of the bridal party was held after the ceremony in the Community Lounge. A reception for approximately 500 guests was held from 2 to 5 p. m. in American legion Post 80.
