BEGIN Name: Thornton Dennis Mellott ,Sr Sex: M Birth: 20 AUG 1880 in Ayr Twp, Fulton Co, PA Death: 5 DEC 1968 Occupation: 1930 Farmer Residence: 1930 Belfast Twp, Fulton Co., PA Note: Thornton MELLOTT Sr., started a woodworking shop at Pleasant Ridge in the late 1920's. He made ladder back chairs with split bottoms. He turned out the rungs on a wooden turning lathe. The lathe was 10 feet long and had a four foot flywheel which had to be peddled like a sewing machine. In later years he put a motor on it. He used white oak and hickory saplings to make the splits. The wood for the slats was soaked and then put in a jig and let dry where it would get its curved shape. Thornton Sr., also made windows, doors, and some furniture. He had four sons: Melvin, Sheridan, Willie, and Thornton Jr., who became carpenters. Melvin and Willie specialized in cabinet making and housing. Willie's son, Larry, and his grandson, Mike, work as carpenters today." Source: The booklet, "MELLOTTS OF FULTON COUNTY, August 28, 1994" pg.48.
