From Hilda Margaret (Lake) Swingle (3.163, child i.): BEGIN After Aunt Madge died Uncle Clayton was very lonesome, so he married Gertrude S. Wheaton. He was 80 when they married, but they had 10 years together. Gertrude lived with Helen Garey until she (Gertrude) died. END As told by Madge's daughter, Helen Lydia Garey (3.161, child i): BEGIN Madge and her sister Lena Lake went to New York City to a baby hospital to train to be nurses, but gave up on that. Then they both went to a lady to become a professional seamstress. Madge took further training in tailoring. She could make a man's suit. They would go to people's homes and stay for a few days or weeks and sew. The only one I remember is Louden Hill Farm for the Ballantines who owned Ballantine Beer and Ale. They worked at sewing for several years, then some friends wanted them to go Washington, D.C. to work. Lena went, but Clayton Garey had proposed to Madge, so she stayed home to get married. Clayton had to quit school in the 8th grade to go to work to help his family. His first job, before 1910 was delivering milk on Long Island and sorting mail in the post office. In 1910 Clayton worked a short time in Washington, D.C. on the census. He then worked in Philadelphia for the Navy Yard as payroll clerk. He did not pass the physical for the army for World War I because of his eyesight, so he figured it was time to propose marriage to Madge Lake, and she said yes. When they got married they bought a farm near Birchardville - his grandfather's farm. Around 1928 he sold the farm and went into business with Guy Robinson in Montrose, The Robinson and Garey Feed Mill. Guy Robinson went into politics and Clayton wanted to work for himself, so they sold the business around 1936. Clayton bought a farm south of Montrose. Madge died in 1959. Clayton remarried Gertrude Wheaton, and they had ten years together, before he died in 1973. END From The Evening Press, Binghamton, New York dated December 28, 1973: BEGIN GAREY - Clayton E.
