END From Marietta Pickell (1.431, child iii): BEGIN According to the 1920 New Jersey Census it shows Elizabeth Hoffman Pickell living with her parents, Eugene M. Hoffman and Martha J. Hoffman. It also shows a grandson by the name of William Y. Pickell who was 16 years old at the time. They say he went by the name of Yawger and many newspapper articles call him by that name. From what we can gather, William never married Elizabeth Hoffman but she did have a son by him. Elizabeth: She was never married to William, but she did have a child by him. Martha: She and William were married in the presence of Mrs. L. A. Sutton and John Y. Brock. She died of cancer and was buried in Flemington with William. From the Whitehouse Review May 28, 1914, pg.1, "After an illness of two months, Mrs. William Y. Pickell, twenty three years old, died Sunday from cancer at her home here. The bride wore a tailored gown of brown, with hat to match. They will reside here where the bridegroom is engaged in business." The marriage certificate shows this was her first marriage and she was 21 years old when she was married. Jeanette: Jeanette's mother was stated to be a full blood Blackfoot indian. We are still checking this out. Jeanette shows up on the 1910 census as being 14 years old. END Date: Fri, 10 Jul 2009 16:54:18 -0700 From: Marleen Van Horne BEGIN According to Elsie O. Hallenbeck's Our Van Horne Kindred, it was Phidia Van Horne that married Baltus Pickel, 10 November 1746. The families of their son Abraham Pickel, his son Baltus A. Pickell, and his son Adrian H. Pickel are covered in the book. Only one child is mentioned for Adrian, Matilda Pickel who married Isaac W. Philhower. I am not sure if there is a discrepancy between the names Phidia and Sophia, or if they are interchangeable as in Fytje and Sophia. Phidia's Parents were Abraham Vanhorn and Antje Covenhoven. I descend from Abraham's brother Cornelius. Our Van Horne Kindred was a good faith effort at correcting serious errors in Van Horne genealogy. I have a copy of the book. The longer I use it, the more discrepancies I find. So, as in all cases with published genealogies, please double and triple check what is in the book. Another thing to consider when researching the Pickel family, apparently their name appears as BICKEL in a number of recorded documents. END from findagrave.com ...
