The New York Times New York, New York Published: January 30, 2011 BEGIN Paid Notice: Deaths KATES, MARY MAIER KATES--Mary Maier, died at the age of 97 on January 22, 2011 in Sharon, CT in the company of her daughter Elizabeth Kates Burns of Marfa, Texas. Mary Maier known as "Molly" to her family and friends was born on July 2, 1913 in Seneca Falls, New York. Her parents were the Honorable William J. Maier who was Comptroller of the State of New York and Grace Yawger Maier. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1934 where she established her lifelong interests in golf, tennis, art and French language and literature. In 1941 she married Rev. Frederick Ward Kates and strongly supported him in his national ministry throughout their marriage. She lived for over twenty years in Millbrook, New York where she was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. She lived a long full life. She is also survived by daughters-in-law Margaret H. Kates and Jane D. Kates and son-in-law Joshua A. Burns; grandchildren Dr. Laura W. Kates, Thomas W. Kates, Jr., Anne K. Field, William D. Kates and Caitlin Y. Burns; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and sister Grace Yawger Maier II and sons William W. Kates and Thomas W. Kates. Funeral services were held on January 27, 2011 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Kent, CT followed by burial in Silver Creek, New York. Services by Allen Funeral Home, Millbrook, New York. END
