Published in News Herald on Nov. 15, 2011 Willoughby, OH BEGIN Dorothy "Bobbie" (Kishpaugh) Baum, 90, of Mentor, formerly of Los Angeles, Calif,. died Nov. 14, 2011, at Emeritus at Mentor. Bobbie was born June 7, 1921, in Hershey, Pa. After earning her bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh and the equivalent of a master's degree from Stevens College, The University of Pittsburgh and Indiana Teacher's College, she moved to the West coast. Bobbie started her professional career as a buyer of jewelry and children's clothing for the White House department store in San Francisco, Calif. Bobbie met Simon "Si" Baum in 1951. They married in 1952, and moved to Los Angeles, where they soon started their family and Bobbie eventually raised three children, Stephen, Robert and Barbara. She eventually returned to the workforce, as a teacher's assistant at a local junior high school, where she worked for 10 years, finally retiring at age 68. Bobbie was involved in a variety of volunteer activities throughout her life. She started as a den mother for her young son's Boy Scout troops, and then moved on to support political candidates in her community. After many years helping out at the Los Angeles Free Clinic, Bobbie found her passion, helping abused women through the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women (LACAAW). Bobbie spent many years assisting women who were victims of domestic violence and rape. In 1986, she won the organization's prestigious Volunteer of the Year award. While volunteering for LACAAW, Bobbie also continued to help out at local schools and maintained her interest in local politics. In 2002, Bobbie and Si moved from Los Angeles to Mentor, where they could be closer to their son, Steve, and his family. Bobbie and Si made many friends, and were members of the Gyro Club of Painesville. They participated in many activities in Mentor, but Bobbie most enjoyed lunching with her dear friends the LOLs every Tuesday, spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and watching the sun set over Lake Erie. Bobbie greatly appreciated the wonderful care she received at Emeritus of Mentor, where she was always treated warmly by the staff. Survivors are sons, Stephen (Robin) Baum of Concord Township and Robert (Nancy) Baum of Sebastopol, Calif.; daughter, Barbara (Greg) Crandell of Leesburg, Va.; grandchildren, Christopher Baum, Heather (Frank) Filice, Eric (Erin) Baum, Katherine Crandell and Zachary Crandell; great-grandchildren, Simon Baum, Millicent Baum, Nico Filice and Cora Filice. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Irma Kishpaugh; husband, Simon Baum; and granddaughter, Kyla Jane Baum.
