Dougherty, 30, a fifth grade teacher at Tioga Hills Elementary School, has startled and shocked her faculty colleagues and students at the school. Miss Dougherty, of 421 Front St., Vestal, died yesterday morning at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City after a very short illness. Richard Finley, staff physician at Wilson, said today Miss Dougherty succumbed to pneumococcal septicemia, which he said is not a highly contagious disease and does not represent a public health hazard. Essentially, Finley said, pneumococcal septicemia stems from the same germ that usually causes pneumonia. Stedman's Medical Dictionary describes pneumococcus as "...the casual agent of lobar pneumonia..." and notes there may be as many as 75 types that differ in degrees of virulence. Septicemia is described as "a systemic disease caused by the presence of Microorganisms or their toxins in the circulating blood." Noting that the germ is quite common, Finley said it is most unusual for the disease to attack the circulatory system with the severity that was exhibited in Miss Dougherty's case. "The reasons are not clear why this happened," he said. "We feel there must have been some special susceptibility." Asked how unusual this particular form of pneumococcal septicemia is, Finley said, "If one million people were exposed to the germ, perhaps 100 would develop some form of illness. Possibly one person would develop one as virulent as the illness that Miss Dougherty unfortunately contracted. "What we have here," he added, "is an extremely rare manifestation of a common germ; when it does cause an illness it usually is not very severe." Finley also said it is important for people not to become unnecessarily alarmed by the unusual aspect of Miss Dougherty's illness. Sally Owens, of 3408 Lynwood Place, Vestal, a Tioga Hills teacher and friend of Miss Dougherty, said today, "Tioga Terrace, where the school is located, is a small community. This has caused quite a stir. "She was fine when she left school on Friday. She visited her family in Pennsylvania over the weekend and was fine when she got back Sunday...Then, boom, she's dead." Mrs. Owens also said that was Miss Dougherty's ninth year of teaching. She said Miss Dougherty had started her teaching career at Tioga Hills, after she graduated from Misericordia College in Dallas, Pa., in 1967. "This was the only place she ever taught in." Mrs Owens said. Miss Dougherty attended public schools in Dimmock, [sic] Pa., before entering Misericordia. Her mother and several relatives live in and around the Meshoppen, Pa., area. She was a member of the Vestal Teachers Association, Association of American Childhood Education, Tioga Hills Parent-Teacher Association, New York State United Teachers Inc., National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 E. Main St., Endicott, and 11 a.m. from St. Bonaventure Church, Auburn, Pa.
