West Nile Virus Coordinator Jennifer Kintner told the county commissioners Tuesday that a 75-year-old woman who lives in "northeast Wyoming County" is being treated for the disease. Her test results were "presumptive positive," Kintner said. She said the state Department of Health would not release any further information to her about the woman's condition. Cheryl McGovern, RN, community health nurse at the Department of Health's Wyoming County State Health Center in Tunkhannock, returned calls to Richard McGarvey of the department's press office in Harrisburg. McGarvey said the Wyoming county woman was hospitalized as of Friday. He explained that a "presumptive positive" result on the initial test for the virus means one's body is producing antibodies against the virus. A second test to confirm the disease is taken 21 days later, but that test isn't always done because most patients recover by that time, McGarvey said. He said as of Tuesday, there were 126 human cases of West Nile Virus in Pennsylvania. Five people have died, all of them over age 60, which is considered the high-risk group, McGarvey said. Kintner said she's been doing regular surveillance in the area where the woman lives since she was diagnosed. Prior to that, she said, "There was a positive crow in that area." So far, five crows have tested positive for West Nile Virus in the county, Kintner said. They were found in Centermoreland, and Exeter, Meshoppen, Noxen and Tunkhannock townships. She reminded residents to eliminate standing water in areas around their homes and to wear insect repellant containing DEET when outside. The woman tested positive on Sept. 26 in a test administered by the state Health Department, Jessica Seiders, a spokeswoman for the department, said Monday. While the case is a cause for concern, Susquehanna County has been trying to deal with the West Nile issue, County Commissioner Lee Smith said. The county hired a full-time West Nile investigator two years ago to do research and mitigation work, Smith said. The cold weather and frost of earlier this month should also make a "big difference" in reducing the mosquito population and risk of the virus, he said. The state health department did not release the identity of the woman, or details on her condition. She lives in Auburn Township, in the southwest corner of Susquehanna County, according to the office of State Health Secretary Dr. Calvin B. Johnson. The health department does not release information unless the case of West Nile becomes fatal, Seiders said. No fatality has been reported in this case, she said. "She was probably outdoors near mosquitoes carrying the virus," Seiders said. According to state Health Department records, 193 human cases of West Nile virus have been reported statewide in Pennsylvania this year, with six of the cases fatal. In late August a crow found on the campus of the Montrose Area Junior/Senior High School tested positive for West Nile. In response, the district made mosquito repellent available to some athletic teams. The dead crow also prompted the collection of mosquitoes, one of which tested positive for the virus. Four cases of West Nile virus in humans have been reported in Broome County this year. The two most recent cases, a 48-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman, were confirmed earlier this month. The viral infection can cause flu-like symptoms in the mildest cases. In the most severe cases, the virus can cause an infection of the central nervous system and be fatal. Less than 1 percent of those infected by the West Nile virus develop serious illness, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. e-mail: gbasler@pressconnects.com END transcription of Newspapers->Deaths->3.37.jpg From a newspaper dated December 22, 2003: BEGIN Winifred (Winetta) Burke McGavin of Meshoppen, Pa.
