From The Enterprise, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania c1945: BEGIN Belvin J. Kishbaugh Is On The Missouri Special to The Enterprise: Aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay-- Belin [sic] J. Kishbaugh, motor machinist's mate, third class, USNR, 1647 Steel St., Berwick, Pa., is playing a role in a momentous event of American history. Serving on this mighty battleship, he was present when the Japanese envoys came aboard to sign the final surrender document. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Allied Commander; Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet, who signed the document for the United States and other famous American military and naval chiefs were present. The 45,000-ton Missouri, named for the home state of President Truman, is one of the most powerful warships ever built. It is now the flagship of Admiral William F. Kishbaugh Owned Kishbaugh Toyota in Beach Haven Mr. Belvin J. Kishbaugh, 84, of Salem Boulevard, Berwick, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the Berwick Retirement Village II, where he had resided for nearly a year. Born Oct. 15, 1919, in Nescopeck, he was a son of the late Levi and Annie (Herring) Kishbaugh. He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, June (Pursel) Kishbaugh of Berwick. Belvin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked in the engine rooms aboard the U.S.S. Missouri and was on the ship's deck when General Douglas MacArthur and Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz accepted the unconditional surrender of the Japanese at the end of World War II. From 1963 through 1996, he was the owner of Kishbaugh Toyota in Beach Haven. His work was his hobby. Belvin enjoyed people, and he enjoyed selling automobiles. He worked at the dealership until his health prevented him from doing so. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Berwick. Besides his wife, June, he is survived by: daughter Karen Kissinger of Bloomsburg; daughter Arlene Kishbaugh; daughter Janet Kishbaugh of Beach Haven; son Joe Kishbaugh of Berwick; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Preceding in death are: parents; brothers Woodrow, Rowland, Ammon, Herbert and Marvin Kishbaugh; and a sister, Minnie (Kishbaugh) Larish. Friends will be received Monday evening, March 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kelchner-McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 119-121 E. Third St., Berwick. His Funeral Service will be Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Rev. Frank L. Demmy, his pastor, will officiate. Born in Bloomsburg, on May 7, 1925, she was the daughter of the late George Washington Pursel and Vera Burtel (Shelhamer) Pursel. June was the widow of Mr. Belvin J. Kishbaugh, who died March 4, 2004. Besides working as a homemaker and mother, June was the other half of Kishbaugh Toyota in Beach Haven. She worked with her husband, Belvin, as they both assumed the daily responsibilities of owning and operating a car dealership. Among her duties, June was a title clerk, a notary and did much of the book work for the business. She and her husband retired in 1996. She was a member of the First Reformed United Church of Christ in Berwick. Her surviving family members are: daughter, Karen Kissinger, and her husband, Kent, of Bloomsburg; daughter, Arlene Stankevitch; daughter, Janet Kissinger, and her husband, John, of Beach Haven; son, Joe Kishbaugh of Beach Haven; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Along with her parents and her husband of 61 years, June was preceded in death by her brother, Sherlyn Pursel. Her funeral service will be Friday, July 14, 2006, at 10 a.m. at the Kelchner-McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 119-121 E. Third St., Berwick. The Rev. Richard Dennison will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery, Briggsville.
