formerly of Binghamton

Eleanor (Kernan) LaVarnway, 87, passed away March 14, 2003, San Diego,
Calif.  She served in the Marine Corps during WWII.  She is survived
by a daughter and a son-in-law, John and Bonnie Norman; a son and a
daughter-in-law, Ronald and Nancy LaVarnway; six grandchildren; one
brother, Gerald Kernan and one sister, Rita Mowry, both of Binghamton.

One of the most fascinating stories I was told was about my Grandfather
Kernan's sister Eleanore.  Eleanore was a Drill Sergeant in the Marines.
She was in the military at a time when women were not put in such
positions.  When she decided to join the military she created such an
uproar in the family that it created a rift between her and her siblings.
Up to the time of her death my grandfather was still outraged that a
woman would do such a thing.
