A prayer written by Catherine Maxwell: BEGIN Prayer to Our Lady of Grace Our Lady of Grace enfold us in the circle of your loving arms. Keep us ever close to you, guide and direct us, bring comfort and cheer to all who reach out to you and give us strength to face each day. Let us walk with God so that each day may be filled according to God's word in kindness and service to others. Endow each of us, Dear Lady, with a heart that will awaken within the hope of tomorrow, a deep commitment to God our Father, the realization of God's beauty and wonders around us; a sense of love and caring for our fellow man, and the wisdom to trust God and the promises He made to us. Teach us to listen with love, with care and concern for others, and without judgement, for He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We ask Your Help, Dear Lady. Amen. END From The Sunday Press, Binghamton, New York dated September 12, 1981 (article entitled "One-room schools" by Ann Treneman, pages 3 - 5): BEGIN Catherine Riley, 72, of Apalachin, was the last teacher at the school. She taught first through third grades until 1970. Her mother was a school teacher in the late 19th century. "She boarded with a family," Riley said. "Her pay was $80 a year and her board." END From Patricia A. Riley (1.120): BEGIN Vincent Riley & Catherine Maxwell Riley Vincent Riley was introduced to Catherine Maxwell through his sister Margaret. Margaret and Catherine went to college together and Margaret brought Catherine home one weekend and the rest is history. Vincent Riley married Catherine Maxwell of Auburn, PA, February 8, 1930 at St. Peter and Paul in Towanda, PA. The marriage was kept secret until the end of the school year in May, because in that day and age married women were not allowed to teach school. The only persons aware of the marriage were Vincent and Catherine's parents and Matthew and Belle Hastings of Cadis, with whom Catherine continued to reside until the end of the school term. Vincent continued to run the family farm in Warrenham. The farm consisted of 150 acres. Catherine, (a graduate of Stroudsburg Teachers College), became a homemaker. Vincent's mother, Catherine continued to reside at the family farm until her death. Vincent and Catherine became parents of 12 children. Agnes, Joseph, Mary, John, Patricia, Catherine, Michael, Dorothy, Thomas, Barbara, Ann and Jane. In 1942 (the onset of WWII), Vincent went to work for IBM. He continued to operate the family farm with the help of his four sons, until 1959 when they moved to Apalachin, NY. The farm was eventually sold to another Warren County citizen, Steven Pendleton. From 1970 until 1980 Vincent operated Riley Home Improvement Company. He was also Warren Township Tax collector for 15 years. Catherine resumed teaching in 1953 after the birth of their 12th child. She taught in the Owego/Apalachin School and the Montrose School District, including the last one room school in Susq. Co.. [sic] She retired from teaching in 1979. Catherine continued to tutor students, was active in her Church, and with her family, until her untimely death on August 4, 1989, as a result of a tragic automobile accident, (a day before her 80th birthday). Vincent died at the age of 87, on November 11, 1993. Both are buried in St. Lukes Cemetery, Warrenham, PA END
