Mrs. Ewing was born Oct. 29th, 1872, in Annapolis, Ill., a daughter of Allen and Laura Reese Calvin. When she was a small child the family came to Canfield, where her father operated a grist mill, and this was her home until her marriage to J. Calvin Ewing in the early ‘90's. Judge Ewing died in 1937. OH Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 24 Dec 1937 "John Calvin Ewing, 74 years of age, one of the best known attorneys in the county, died early last Saturday morning at his home in Youngstown, following a year's illness. He was born Feb. 26, 1863, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ewing, being descendants of pioneers of Jackson and Austintown townships. When his parents moved from Jackson to canfield, Calvin was 12 years old. He attended the public schools and was a member of the first graduating class of the Northeastern Ohio Normal College in 1885. Following graduation he taught school in Green township, later becoming principal of the Canfield school he had attended. He also taught in Lowellville and served as president of the Mahoning County Teachers' Association. While teaching he read law and for some time before being admitted to the bar in 1892 was associated with Gen. A. W. Jones in Youngstown. He was elected probate judge in 1900, serving six years. Since then he had been in private practice. He was always interested in farming and the county experiment farm south of Canfield is one of the fine properties he developed. He was a member of Tabernacle U. P. Church. On Oct. 3, 1893, he married Miss Eva Calvin of Canfield, who survives with one son, Attorney James A. Ewing and a granddaughter, Mary Jane Ewing, a daughter, Mrs. George Kelsey, Pasadena, Cal., died five years ago. Funeral services at the residence Monday afternoon were in charge of Dr. J. I.
