OH Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 13 Jan 1961 "Jo Van Calvin, 86, died in his sleep early Friday morning at his home on the Salem Road. Born in Annapolis, Ill., March 26, 1874, he was the son of Allen W. and Julia Reese Calvin, and following the death of his mother came to Canfield with his father and an older sister when he was seven months of age. He attended the old Northeastern Ohio Normal college and was employed at the Ohio Works in Youngstown. Later he moved to Birmingham, Ala., where construction of a steel plant was under way. In 1907 he returned to Canfield and took over the operation of a grist mill on Wadsworth street, which had been owned by his father. Three years later he disposed of his interests in Canfield and returned to Ensley, Ala., where he was personnel director for the United States Steel Corp. until his retirement in 1946. Mr. Calvin was a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Kiwanis Club in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. In 1900 (sic 1899) he was married to the former Miss Mary Armstrong Arnold of Canfield, She died in 1952. An only child, Lee, died forty-seven years ago. Mr. Calving leaves seven nieces and nephews, including William K. Arnold, with whom he had made his home the past few years. Funeral services, with the Rev. Chas. F. Fulcomer officiating, were held Sunday afternoon at the Williams Funeral Home, and burial made in the Canfield cemetery." Note:Canfield Twp. Mrs. Calvin was born in Goshen, Indiana, June 15, 1872, a daughter of William and Sarah Armstrong Arnold, and came to Canfield with her family when a small child. In 1899 she was married Joe V. Calvin of Canfield and for many years had resided in and near Birmingham, Ala. For the past seven years the couple had made their home in Fort Walton. Besides her husband, she leaves two sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Owens of Fort Walton, and Mrs. Neil Hutchings of Birmingham; and a brother, Sylvester A. Arnold of Youngstown. Calvin, who died in Ensley, Ala., last week Tuesday night of pneumonia, arrived in Canfield last Friday morning and funeral services, conducted by Rev. T. L. Kiernan and Rev. J. M. Kendig, were held in the afternoon from the residence of E.A. Arnold on South Broad street. There was a large attendance of sorrowing relatives and friends. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, among them being one sent by the Ensley Boy Scouts Camp of which Lee was a member. The pallbearers were Boy Scouts, James Nash, Powers Dickson, Donald Dickson, Ralph Hawkins, George Wetmore and Edmund Tanner. Interment was made in the village cemetery." Note: Canfield Twp.
