From from the Montrose Democrat, Montrose, Pennsylvania in circa 1940: BEGIN THOSE LAKE BOYS This newspaper reported erroneously last week that Searle Lake had been succeeded by Blaine Sterling as Sealer of Weights and Measures. We always did get those Lake boys mixed up, and we are glad to state publicly and officially that Blaine Sterling replaced Ralph Lake, Blaine having been awarded the political plum by County Commissioners Robinson, Coleman and Davies. To get ourself, and perhaps you, straight on the lengthy Lake lads, we herewith state that Searle Lake and Homer Lake are brothers, sons of Abe Lake, who now, at 86, is seriously ill at his home in South Montrose. On the other hand, Ralph and Mark Lake are brothers, sons of the late South Montrose feed and cattle dealer, Michael L. Lake. Homer, we don't need to tell you, is a Montrose merchant, while Brother Mark is chairman of the Susquehanna County Board of Public Assistance, and has been head of the board since its establishment by the Democrats. The funny thing about that is that Mark's a Republican; was given the thankless, unsalaried job by the Democrats and was kept in the post by the Republicans, when Gov. Arthur H. James was swept into office with the backing of one "Mose" Annenberg and Joseph N. Pew, Jr., while Democratic factions were battling each other. What's more, Mark is the only "black sheep" in the family, by which we mean he's a Republican. But at that he's the sort of Republican we like, being of the Independent, self-thinking type. * * * Abe and Mike Lake were ALWAYS Democrats and did their best to bring up their sons that way. Our guess is that one of these fine days Mark will be back in the liberal, Democratic fold. Searle Lake, to get the record complete, is a farmer in South Montrose, while Ralph, the former scoop and scale balancer, is engaged in the feed business with Mark in "South Town". Someday, when Montrose and South Montrose "grow together" we'll be happy to claim all the Lake lads as "Montroseans". * * * Mark was also County Treasurer for one term (four years). By law he was not allowed to succeed himself. END From the Montrose Independent, Montrose, Pennsylvania dated March 3, 1955: BEGIN Mark B. Lake Seeks Office of Co. Treasurer Mark B. Lake of South Montrose last week announced his candidacy for nomination and election to the office of County Treasurer of Susquehanna County, subject to the rules of the Republican party at the primary election May 17. Mr. Lake owns and operated a feed business in South Montrose and was for many years in partnership with his brother, Ralph Lake. Ralph Lake retired from the business several years ago and since that time, Mark has run the business alone. Mark Lake has always been interested in hunting and fishing and has been active in the activities of the sportsmen's clubs. He frequently fishes in Canada. Mr. Lake is a member of Warren Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, of Montrose. He is a supporter of a number of civic movements in his community and in the county. Mrs. Lake was the former Miss Clementine Arnold. The Lakes have three children, Charles, at home; John, who lives in New York, and Mrs. Robert F. Babcock, of Montrose. Mr. Lake is the only candidate to date who has announced his name for the office of County Treasurer.
