A sign was erected to mark the area where at one time the "Peak of the Moon Tavern" stood opposite of the site of the river battle. At the time of the Rev. War Port Norris was known as Dallas Ferry. Posted by: "july37" july37@cox.net turkeypt2 Date: Tue Aug 12, 2008 3:49 pm ((PDT)) The tavern was built by Wm Dallas on the Maurice River. Dallas & his sons later on operated a ferry & sawmill along the river. I don't know the exact date the tavern was built. Maybe around 1749 but it could be before that date. Joseph "Coffee" Jones bought Dallas Ferry in 1810 & changed the name of the place from Dallas Ferry to Port Norris. Jones tore down the old tavern & built a new one on the same site between 1810 & 1812. In 1812 a sudden & violent storm destroyed most of Jones' livestock business. He thought the storm was a bad omen, sold his property & left town soon after. The second tavern stood I think until sometime in the 30's. I'm not sure of the date the second one was torn down but a home was built on the site. The second tavern had a dark history that surrounded it.
